‼️DENTAL HEALTH: WHY DO WE OFFER A FREE DENTAL CHECK-UP ⁉️

📌 IMPORTANT INFORMATION‼️

Looking after your pet’s teeth might not seem like an important task, but dental disease causes more than just bad breath. It can lead to serious health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.

Dr Patrick Liversage (BVCSc PgC SADAOS) is an advanced practitioner in dentistry and oral surgery. Below he explains the science behind periodontal disease and why it’s essential that your fur ball gets regular dental checks.

🔴 Periodontal disease is a term used to describe infection and associated inflammation of the tissues surrounding the tooth including the gums, the covering of the root, the bone the tooth sits in and ligament which holds the tooth in place.

🔴Periodontal disease is by far the most common medical condition seen in cats and dogs. By two years of age, 70% of cats and 80% of dogs have some form of periodontal disease, with small and toy breed dogs being particularly susceptible.

🔴Periodontal disease is initiated by oral bacteria which adhere to the teeth in a substance called plaque. Plaque is a biofilm which is made up almost entirely of oral bacteria, contained in a matrix composed of salivary glycoproteins and extracellular polysaccharides. Plaque forms within 24 hours after a professional cleaning, calculus within 3 days and gingivitis begins as early as 2 weeks.

🔴Periodontal inflammation is caused by subgingival plaque – this is plaque which forms below the gumline and cannot be seen when you look at the teeth. This means the control of plaque needs to address both on the tooth and under the gumline to be effective at controlling periodontal disease.

🔴Brushing teeth regularly will remove the plaque and calculus above the gumline on the teeth, does not address the plaque below the gumline so will not prevent the development of periodontal disease.

🔴Calculus, also known as tartar, is plaque which has solidified due to the presence of minerals in saliva. Calculus in and of itself is not capable of causing disease and is mostly an irritant to the pet. However, the bacteria in the subgingival plaque excrete toxins and metabolic products which create inflammation of the gingival and periodontal tissues. This inflammation causes damage to the gingival tissues and initially results in gingivitis. Eventually, the inflammation can lead to a severe gum infection that can lead to tooth loss and other serious health complications known as periodontitis.

🔴The first sign of periodontal disease is bleeding on probing or brushing which occurs prior to a colour change. The first outward clinical sign of gingivitis is erythema (reddening) of the gingiva (gums), which is followed by oedema (swelling) and halitosis (bad breath). While colour change is a reliable sign of disease, it is now known that increased gingival bleeding on probing, brushing or chewing occurs prior to a colour change. Gingivitis is typically associated with calculus, but can be caused by plaque alone in some pets.

🔴Periodontal disease has been associated with numerous severe problems in the mouth including:
📌Oronasal fistulas – a hole between the mouth and nasal passage
📌Oral cancer or Mandibular fractures
📌Ocular infection and blindness
📌Osteomyelitis
📌Class II perio-endo lesions – lesions which effect the pulp inside the tooth as well as the bone surrounding the tooth.

🔴Periodontal disease and subsequent infections have been linked to numerous other diseases elsewhere in the body, including:
📌 Diabetes Mellitus
📌 Heart disease
📌 Lung disease
📌 Liver disease
📌 Kidney disease
📌 Early death
