Kaapsehoop Horse Trails is all about horses, nature and people. We treasure friendships and are reaching out to support Leon Smith who has always been part of the Kaapsehoop Horse Trails family.

If you can support this campaign, you stand a chance to be a lucky winner of time up on the mountain with us and the horses while helping a friend in need.

In spite of their size, a sense of safety, connectedness and peacefulness is experienced in the presence of horses. Whether a competent experienced rider or a first timer, when interacting with horses we experience a sense of wellness.

The Kaapsehoop Wild Horse Fund team has started an intensieve campaign of making road users more aware of the wild horses on our Kaapsehoop road, and to urge travellers to reduce speed over the Kaapsehoop mountain. The gruesome accident Sunday evening at Kaapsehoop Gasteplaas resulted in another unnecessary death of a mare and her full term unborn foal. Our horse population is declining at an alarming rate, we must do everything in our power to reduce man made injuries to the horses!!Radio Laeveld assisted with coverage this morning, the Lowvelder will also raise awareness with an article later this week. From 200 horses in 2016 to 50 horses in 2024, the future of our wild horses look bleak. We have about 30 signboards warning travellers of wild animals, seems it is not enough. There are currently no signboards at the Kaapsehoop Gasteplaas stretch, where the accident occured this Sunday. We appeal for sponsorships to erect two signboards at that stretch of the road. There is a Khoopwhatsup group for Kaapsehoop Wild Horse volunteers, if anyone wants to join this group please do so, these are the people who are actively involved in fundraising and horse care, people who go and help the horse in need when there is an incident. I have appealed to the public to report any horse injuries or accidents to any person, pub, restaurant, hotel etc in Kaapsehoop. If it gets reported to you please publish it on the Hoop for Kaapsehoop group, or direct to Andrea at Bohemian, 0767647625, who will notify the relevant parties. Please send photos and location to assist in speedy recovery of the injured horse. We thank you all for caring for the last few wild horses! 🐴 Regards, Andrea cell 0662303383.

3. Christo Germishuys, Kaapsehoop Horse Trails

We reached out to Christo from Kaapsehoop Horse Trails and asked him a few questions. Christo shared insights into his passion for horses, the inspiration behind starting his business, and his unique approach as a "Horse Whisperer."

𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝘆: How did your history with horses begin?
𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼: Previous life time, and from a very young age I had a yearning to be with horses.

𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝘆: What inspired you to start Kaapsehoop Horse Trails?
𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼: I've always been very fond of the area – I arrived here with 10 horses, I liked the location and saw potential!

𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝘆: Why do they call you a "Horse Whisperer"?
𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼: Definitely not to the fact that I whisper to horses – its not a matter of whispering, its more of a body and mind communication on both parts.

𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝘆: How did you find yourself in Kaapsehoop?
𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼: From a young age I was attracted to the mountains.

𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝘆: Could you share a memorable experience or success story where your horse whispering skills made a significant impact?
𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼: On every one of the horses that I trained, they all taught me something different. All breeds have similarities, but every horse is an individual, therefore every horse has a different character – very much like humans. The different people of all walks of life I’ve met – I’ve learnt something from all of them.

With more than 30 years of trail riding experience, Christo works on a natural horsemanship basis. This is a psychology-based training technique often referred to as gentle horsemanship. It is a sympathetic method working with the horse’s nature, using an understanding of how horses think, prioritising the animals’ instincts and focusing on understanding rather than controlling them. It encourages a horse to think for itself and figure out what the appropriate and desired response would be to a given stimulus, thus teaching a horse to understand what you want them to do. This approach also results in a healthy relationship between horse and handler.
