International Dog Day was first celebrated in 2004 by animal welfare activist and pet lifestyle expert Colleen Paige.
Ms Paige chose the date of August 26 in particular as it was on this date that the activist's family adopted their first dog "Sheltie" from the local animal shelter.
๐พThe day was officially adopted in 2013 into the New York State Legislation. The official website of the event said, "Our mission is to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year and acknowledges family dogs and dogs that work selflessly each day to save lives, keep us safe and bring comfort."

On one of our @phutupupkabokweni outreach missions, roughly 10kms outside of White River, we found ๐๐๐ก๐๐ญ - abandoned, yet full of hope. We couldnโt leave him behind, so we brought him to safety and gave him a name fitting his spirit: Felix, which means Lucky or Blessed in Latin.
Felix is now being sponsored by Lowveld Canine Coaching at Pro Life Pet Rescue, where heโs receiving all the love and care he deserves. Heโs around 6 years old and looks like he might be a Belgian Malinois mix, with a heart as big as his paws. Despite his rough start, Felix is eager to find his forever home, where he can curl up in a cozy spot and soak up all the love.
