Wishing you a joyful and healthy 2025.
Season’s greetings from Van Wijk Street Vet. May your holidays be merry, your pets happy, and your hearts full. Thank you for letting us care for your furry family members this year.
Stay Ahead of Kennel Cough This Holiday Season
Kennel Cough remains a common risk for dogs and cats in shared spaces like kennels or daycare facilities.
What is Kennel Cough?
A highly contagious respiratory infection that can affect both dogs and cats. It spreads quickly in environments where animals gather. While not life-threatening, it causes significant discomfort for pets.
Symptoms to Watch For:
• Persistent, honking cough
• Nasal discharge
• Lethargy
• Reduced appetite
• Low-grade fever
Prevention Matters: The best way to protect your pet is through vaccination. Vaccinations need to be administered at least 10-14 days before your pet enters the kennel to ensure full protection.
Plan ahead and contact Van Wijk Street Vet to keep your pets healthy and holiday-ready.

It’s World Diabetes Day 🐾
Understanding Pet Diabetes
Diabetes isn’t just a human issue; pets can get it too. When their body doesn’t produce enough insulin, blood sugar levels can rise, leading to serious health issues.
Keep an eye out for signs of diabetes in your pets:
• Frequent or excessive urination
• Increased thirst
• Appetite changes
• Weight loss after initial gain
• Cloudy eyes
• Low energy or seeming depressed
Maintaining a healthy weight is key in prevention. Visit us for a free weigh-in consultation to keep your pet on track. We’re here to help them lead a healthy, happy life!

28 September is #WorldRabiesDay! The theme for this year is: “Breaking Boundaries”. Remember all mammals can get infected by rabies. The common signs of rabies are: Changes in behaviour and neurological symptoms, which may include the following signs: Excessive salivation, paralysis, inability to swallow, continuous vocalisation, convulsions, aggressiveness, or non-responsive behaviour. Report any suspected rabid animals immediately to your state or private veterinarian, animal health technician or the police. Are your dogs and cats up to date with their rabies vaccinations? Protect them and you! #BreakingBoundaries #WRD2024 #GlobalAllianceforRabiesControl
This mommy dog experienced complications during birth and had to be rushed to the vet for a c-section. Afterward, she was sterilized to prevent further risks. When planning to breed your dog or if pregnancy is suspected, it’s crucial to involve your vet from the very beginning. We can assist throughout the process, offering ultrasounds, X-rays to track the number of puppies, and ensuring they’re not too large, or preventing any other complications during birth.
We also provide advice on diet, what to look out for, and guidance through the steps of labor.
So remember, if your dog was on heat and was mated, you should see us four weeks later for a check-up.
