Weather Advisory - 25 October 2024 | 13:45

The SA Weather Service has issued an advisory for Level 4 disruptive rainfall over Cape Town and surrounding municipalities from midnight on Sunday, 27 October, until the early hours of Monday, 28 October.

Widespread showers and thundershowers are predicted, along with windy conditions.

Potential impacts could include localised flooding of settlements and roads, and damage to property and infrastructure.

All City services will be put on standby to deal with any impacts from the forecast.

We advise the public to please take heed of the current advisory, and to start implementing any possible mitigation measures around their properties in the interim.

This would include clearing out drainage systems and cleaning gutters, removing dead tree branches and other obstructions, and digging trenches around their homes to divert water away.

Also, please save the Public Emergency Communication Centre number on your cellphone in case of an emergency – 021 480 7700 or 107 if you’re calling from a landline.

KENNEL COUGH! Should we run and hide?

We have been seeing quite a few coughing dogs lately, so we thought it would be good to provide some information on Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex (CIRDC) - formerly known as Kennel Cough.

The name of the disease has been changed, because the term Kennel Cough is a bit of a misnomer - dogs can get the disease from any location where they have contact with other dogs, not just kennels.

As the new name implies, the disease is not caused by a single organism, but is caused by a combination of different viruses and bacteria working together to cause disease. Not every case will involve every possible organism. This will become important when we talk about vaccination later.

The main symptom of CIRDC is a dry, honking cough that often ends in a retch, sometimes with froth that looks like vomit. Not all dogs will cough, and some will have just have runny noses or eyes, with some sniffling or sneezing. Depending on which viruses are involved, there may also be other symptoms such as diarrhoea.

The disease is usually mild and self-limiting and most dogs recover in 7 to 10 days. Sometimes, however, the disease may progress to pneumonia (meaning it has spread to the lungs), and that requires serious veterinary care.

CIRDC is HIGHLY contagious and can be spread by direct contact such as licking or muzzling, as well as indirect contact such as inhaling cough or sneeze droplets, or bowls and toys contaminated with saliva. It is best to keep infected dogs away from other dogs.

Some of the organisms in the complex may affect cats, too.

Your veterinarian may be able to diagnose CIRDC on an exam alone, but some cases may require additional testing, especially if it doesn't resolve with treatment. Your vet may describe several medications to control the symptoms and help your dog recover faster. Some cases may need antibiotics, but not all.

The disease can largely be prevented with vaccination - the 5-in-1 vaccine that is part of every dog's "core" vaccine protects against a few of the viruses involved in the complex. The Kennel Cough vaccine only protects against a bacteria called Bordetella Bronchiseptica. Some clinics may offer more comprehensive vaccines. As mentioned earlier, there is actually quite a large number of organisms that can cause CIRDC, and not all of them are covered by vaccinations, so it is still possible for a vaccinated dog to get a form of CIRDC, though the risk is greatly reduced and the disease is usually less severe, because there are fewer organisms interacting with each other to cause disease.

We recommend that all dogs that will be in regular contact with other dogs (such as at a daycare, at dog parks or on the beach) should be vaccinated with the 5-in-1 as well as the Kennel Cough vaccine.

If your dog's vaccinations are out of date, be sure to make a booking:
