FLOOD SAFETY FOR YOUR PETS

The recent flooding in Melkbosstrand has caused severe disruptions for many of its residents. We are concerned about the health and safety of our community's pets, and therefore have decided to share tips on how to keep your pets safe during this period of heavy rainfall.

1) Ensure than your pets are microchipped so that they can be safely identified and returned to you in the event that you become separated during the flooding.

2) Ensure that all pet food is stored in an elevated and dry area, as pet food that becomes wet is at risk of developing mould, which can have serious health effects.

3) Ensure that small pets are trained to use a pet carrier so that they can be safely transported in a hurry.

4) Consider investing in pet life jackets if flooding is a frequent occurrence where you live.

5) Make sure you have accommodation plans for your pets (which includes having their vaccinations up to date so that they will be allowed into a kennel facility) in the event that you need to evacuate your home.

6) Do not allow your pets to drink flood water, as it may be contaminated with dangerous chemicals or diseases.

7) Leptospirosis is a disease that can be spread via water sources, including floodwater. At Duynevet we routinely vaccinate dogs against Leptospirosis - ensure that your pet is up to date.

8 ) If your yard is flooded, allow your pets to come into a dry area. Prolonged periods without drying can lead to serious skin conditions.
