Botes Racing

Botes Racing * Established 1995 *
Horse racing stable based at the Vaal Racecourse After 5years he attained his jockey licence but was ultimately set on training.

Botes Racing is owned and operated by Barend Daniel Botes, who is resident at the yard for optimal supervision and management. Entering the race world in 1985 as a 16year old boy, Barend embarked on a journey as an apprentice jockey at Summerveld. In 1995, he started what has over the years become a now successful race yard, stabling and training multiple athletes in varying stages of training. As

a diligent problem solver, he has become known for his success with horses that require a fresh start and out of the box thinking. His approach has given many horses a second chance at a successful and productive career in the industry and has also cemented long standing relationships with many of his owners. With a keen interest in breeding and matching pedigrees, he has offered his expertise to several breeders in the breeding season to optimize their chances at breeding future champions through careful selection of suitable stallions to cover their mares. This particular talent also means Barend has a keen eye for pedigree in selection of potential race horses in younger stock and is always open to offering assistance to both his existing clients as well as shopping for potential new owners.

What a lovely ending to the season. July most certainly was a fruitful month for Botes Racing and being recognised for the hard work and dedication is a fantastic accomplishment. Thank you to Gold Circle! Thank you to our sponsors, World Sports Betting!!!

Barend Botes, who recently relocated from the Highveld, has a relatively small string at his new Summerveld yard and only had two wins to his name this month. However, those two were significant as they belong to star filly Quid Pro Quo who, barring some anomaly, will be crowned Equus Champion Two-Year-Old Filly. Although the Gr1 Allan Robertson Fillies Championship fell outside of this month, Botes steered Quid Pro Quo to victories in the Gr2 Zulu Kingdom Explorer Gold Slipper on Hollywoodbets Durban July Day and the month ending victory in the Gr1 Douglas Whyte Stakes for an unprecedented treble.

Barend is Gold Circle’s Trainer of the Month for July.

As the season draws to a close, we reflect on how our move to KZN far exceeded our expectations. We are blessed to have kept our team together despite the challenges of adapting and appreciate the effort they put in daily while still getting our feet firmly grounded. To every farrier, dentist, physio, chiro and vet who has had some involvement, we thank you! Our loyal owners who have travelled this distance with us and continue to support us are tye driving force behind it all! To our trainer, BB, you keep us on our toes at best but without you none of it would be possible.
To fellow trainers, well done on your successes throughout the season and we wish only the best for the upcoming season.
Here's to bigger and better things to come...looking forward to continued success, growth celebrations in what we hope will be an even more successful season to come!

Amazing spoil for the princess's biggest supporter Shorty.

Quid Pro Quo galloped into the history books under Smanga Khumalo, winning effortlessly after having her front shoes removed at the start - making the feat even more incredible.

This was her 5th win in a row which includes the Gr1 Allan Robertson Fillies Championship and the Gr2 Golden Slipper, to become the first filly to ever win the unofficial 2-year-old triple crown.

A story that warms the hearts - owned and bred by Gerald and Karen Kalil, she is a daughter of Lance and gave her trainer his first Gr1 winner in June.

Her groom Asithandile Mgadeni has walked away with an epic prize of R100 000, winning the World Pool Moment Of The Day.

Congratulations to the entire team!

Yesterday saw the culmination of the KZN season and what ended in our superstar filly Quid Pro Quo making history.
As a 2yo she has now won 5 on the trot, including 2 Grade 1s and a Grade 2. She has surpassed all expectations and proves that careful breeding and a big heart can make history.
As the first horse ever to win the 1200m Allan Robertson, the 1400m Golden Slipper and the 1600m Douglas Whyte Stakes, she has written her own story and stamped her place in the history books!
A daughter of Lance, out of Delightfull Diva (also trained by Barend), she combines looks and the speed her Sire exhibited before retiring to stud and despite the odds (other than those flagged for betting) being stacked against her, she came out victorious and ended our first season in KZN on a high.
When people say "it takes a village", noone can truly appreciate the effort that goes into the production and preparation of a race horse, even more so when you are blessed with the opportunity to train a filly of this calibre.
First and foremost, Gerald and Karen Kalil...thank you for entrusting us with this filly. We knew from the start she is something special and we appreciate your loyalty and the leap of faith it took in moving her with to KZN. We are blessed and honoured to walk this journey with you and are excited for what the future holds.
The team at home, headed by Donald Monatisa, that keep the ship sailing day to day. Depite the challenges, a big move and major adaptations to work schedule and routine, they soldier on and keep going. Shorty, her devoted and loyal groom, who tends her every need. Skhokho, who took over the reins for a short time while Shorty was away and made sure she never skipped a beat.
S'manga "bring it home" Bling Khumalo...your talent and feel for a horse is unmatched. Your ability to read a race and bring the best out in your horse is one for the books. Thank you for the amount of time you invest into this filly and the fact that you get the absolute best out of this legend!
Athandiwe Mgudlwa we appreciate you sacrificing your time and stepping in when Smanga Khumalo isnt available and hope you realise how much we value your efforts.
Tash, your time and effort with Quid Pro Quo is appreciated more than you know. Our spirited filly absolutely loves your sessions and the change seen in her after each session is remarkable.
No hoof no horse...never a truer word spoken. Martin, thank you for the time you spend in our yard making sure our horses feet are at their best. The fact that our filly could win a race barefoot is testament to the fact that our horses feet are at their best and even though her silly antics and bouncing around cost her a shoe, she ran like there was no change.
Finally, our trainer, the man of the moment, Barend Daniel Botes. Your dedication to knowing everything and constantly improving is unmatched. Your out of the box approach cannot be matched and we know this is the start of big things to come.
Thank you to our Sponsors World Sports Betting for travelling this journey with us and the continued support.
