Fractures!!

I'm seeing Fractures on a daily basis...no it's not normal.

I'll soon be posting why Fractures shouldn't just be seen as normal, why they can occur in the mouth and how to prevent them.

Wolf teeth are teeth that have been left over from an earlier stage, they are also known as vestigial teeth or remnant teeth.

H I S T O R Y.🦷

30 - 60 million years ago wolf teeth had a functional purpose as cheek teeth.

E R U P T I O N.🦷

The position of the upper wolf teeth represents the position of the root from an earlier functional primordial teeth.

The UPPER wolf teeth has 3 possible positions in which the wolf tooth can erupt.

1. Most common. Positioned directly in front of the leading edge on the upper number 6’s cheek teeth.
2. Second common. Slightly inside upper 6’s cheek teeth.
3. Third common. Ahead of leading edge of first upper cheek teeth.

The LOWER wolf teeth has two possible positions in which the wolf tooth can erupt.

1. Ahead of leading edge of lower 6’s
2. Anterior position.

A G E.🦷

Common eruption is between the age of 6-8 months. However this varies in cases where it’s erupting as a deciduous or permanent tooth.

It is not uncommon to extract a set of wolf tooth for another set to appear at a later stage.

Around the age of 3 years old the roots of the wolf tooth will start to dissolve and or fuse to the bone. Therefore for easy extraction purposes it is recommended to have wolf teeth removed between the age of 1-2 years old.

To eliminate any and all possibilities of bit or occlusal interference. It will also be more comfortable for ridden horses to have all wolf teeth extracted.

POST ALERT ⚠️📢👀

This pony was shown to me this week, at first when starting out with my oral examination I thought we had a missing Lower 300 Incisor.

Not the case.

The inscisor was placed behind the lower inscisors.
This was the first time I've treated this pony and looking at his previous records this tooth has been sitting like this forever.

The challenge we are facing here is the food particles and grass getting stuck between the two Incisors.

Other than that, I reduced the misplaced tooth to the height of the other inscisors to prevent it restricting biomechanics.

There were no signs of discomfort when palpating and working on this tooth. No clinical symptoms of inflammation or infection. In this case we wouldn't need to extract.

This job comes with a lot of challenges, but passion keeps me going.

This job literally requires blood, sweat and tears.

Working with an animal 10× your size, in some cases when pain is present or fear of the "horse eating tool"....ain't no joke.

But boy, let me tell you getting over those obstacles and obtaining great results, relieving horses from great pain and discomfort is a gift to me.

BRIDLES and BITS!!!

We worry so much about the perfect saddle and check it often and we tend to forget how important the bridle and bit is!

It is more than just the pretty sparkles or beautiful leather or latest fashion trends, when it comes to bridles.

There aren't many bridles made with horse sense. Most of them have buckles and pressure points on very delicate structures like the TMJ and subcutaneous nerves. (Check photos below)

Even if there aren't many bit and bridle fitters, please don't forget that this important part has to have atleast the perfect fit as the saddle.

On Tuesdays I will set up a quiz for my horsey friends, for educational purposes.

Yesterday's quiz asked if the dark color, appearing on the horse's gums were BRUISING or PIGMENTATION.

THE CORRECT ANSWER IS PIGMENTATION.

The color of a horse's gums can reveal a lot about his health and any variation from the normal salmon pink could indicate a health crisis.

One of my patients that I treated today had an extra tooth(supernumerary) located right behind the 111(last Molar on the right maxillary arcade)

Not only does the supernumerary tooth put a heavy amount of pressure on the last opposing molar(411) that, if not seen to, would eventually result in a fracture, it imbalances the whole mouth that would result in additional problems throughout the horse's body.

I am going to ask my physio, that I reccomend to my patients after a dental treatment, to briefly explain what she found treating this horse and how -not just this mouth but ANY imbalanced mouth affect the body.

(She will explain in the comment section)

My name is Carla-Skye Volschenk and I am an equine dentist from Johannesburg, traveling nation wide to treat horses.

My page is a platform to share case studies and educational content for horse owners, discussing the importance of a horse's teeth, oral health and how it can affect the horse as a whole if dental treatments are neglected.

I will post dates and availability by region in advance so that appointments can be made.
