Setbacks in dressage aren’t failures—they’re lessons. Every great rider has faced tough moments, but what sets them apart is their mindset. Instead of seeing mistakes as defeats, view them as valuable information. Your horse isn’t resisting to be difficult; there’s always a reason. Approach challenges with curiosity, not frustration.

You can’t always control the outcome, but you can control your attitude, preparation, and response. Focus on improving what’s within your power—your position, timing, and feel. One bad day doesn’t define your riding; progress isn’t linear. Dressage is a journey of refinement and patience.

Trust the process and remember why you started—the connection, the elegance, the harmony. Those moments will come again. The best riders aren’t the ones who never struggle; they’re the ones who refuse to quit. Keep going—your breakthrough is coming.

And this is not just for beginner and novice riders!
No matter what level you're at, it is you that is influencing your horse's way of going... and when one sees horses at the highest level performing on the forehand and with hollow backs one has to ask, does the rider even have any idea (or care) that they're the cause and does their coach even see, nevermind bother addressing any of it anymore and at what point did they stop seeing it, if they ever saw it in the first place?
Most riders see hundreds of photos of themselves, but do they actually see anything? Because there's no change in them over many years of the same bad/incorrect/unhealthy-for-the-horse rider's seat/position...
Poor horses!

It can be challenging to find the right hand position as every instructor has his/her own way and has had different training experiences. Here are a few things every rider should be aware of and keep in mind while working on a correct hand position.

DRESSAGE SOLUTIONS: To help you stay stable in the saddle while still allowing for your horse’s movement …

When you sit on your horse, imagine that you are the center tower of a suspension bridge. You have cables that stretch both forward and backward to various points on your horse’s topline that allow for movement between you and the cables. This helps to create balance, self-carriage and collection in your horse while you remain stable in the saddle.

DRESSAGE SOLUTIONS: To maintain a correct upper body position through corners ...

Imagine you are balancing on an exercise ball. If you lean your torso into a turn, your seat bones will push the ball (your horse) in the opposite direction. To help the horse balance, keep your spine straight and use your shoulders to turn. Your seat bones will follow. Try it on a ball, it works!

Don’t assume that every horse with a high poll is correct, and don’t assume that a horse that is low and round is incorrect. You have to look at the state of the horse’s *back* to truly judge how correct it is. The horse’s back should be relaxed, swinging, and elevated under the saddle, rather than still and hollow. When the horse’s back is properly “up” (arched upwards under the rider’s seat,) he will be correctly seeking the connection. And this can be achieved with many different relative heights of the horse’s neck. Never forget that it is equally as damaging to horses to ride them with a high head and neck with hollow back as it is to ride a horse cranked down in Rollkur.
