Driven by the UN, World Food Day is dedicated to celebrate the efforts of those who transform our food systems, recognise the shortcomings that still exist, and conciously make an effort to drive our food systems towards sustainability. Each one of us have a role to play, and at PolyOrganics our role is to feed soil organically. Today, we celebrate healthy soil - the start of all food systems.

This week we're giving a shout out to the FUN-guys in our soil.

Did you know? Soil fungi are microscopic plant-like cells that can be single celled (e.g. yeast) or grow in long threadlike structures or hyphae that make a mass called mycelium (e.g. mushrooms).

Food for thought: There are three groups of soil fungi - decomposers (saprophytic fungi), mutualists (mycorrhizal fungi) and pathogens or parasites. Decomposers and mutualists help maintain nutrient levels in the soil and some work in partnership with plants. In exchange for carbon from the plant, mycorrhizal fungi help solubilize phosphorus and bring soil nutrients (phosphorus, nitrogen, micronutrients, and perhaps water) to the plant. Unfortunately, pathogens harm or kill plants but play an important role in maintaining biodiversity in an ecosystem.

When protecting your garden plants from pathogenic fungi, be careful not to kill the good guys to! They are vital for healthy soil. If you're not sure if the fungi you see in your garden is good or bad, do a Google search before you act.

As we dig a bit deeper into our appreciation of soil, we want to take a moment to celebrate the importance of soil for the regulation of carbon in the atmosphere.

Did you know? There are more than 2700 gigatons of carbon stored in the earths soils.

Food for thought: All living organisms are made of carbon. Plants are amazing in that they not only take carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere through photosynthesis; when plants die, or parts of them die, they become another source of carbon in the soil. In short plants are vital to getting carbon out of the atmosphere and back into the soil and to keeping the carbon cycle (which we have thrown out of balance) in balance.

For those of you who enjoy a good TedTalk, this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgmssrVInP0) video describes the importance of soil in the carbon cycle beautifully.

Last week we celebrated how healthy soil feeds a whole ecosystem of fauna and flora through the Soil Food Web. This week we want to take a moment to recognise what soil actually is.

Food for thought: soil is so much more than the little bit we can see. It is a combination of organic matter (decomposing plants, animals, and microbes), biomass (living plants, animals, and microbes), water, air, minerals (sand, silt, and clay), and nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium).

Did you know? soil has 6 distinct layers as the composition of the soil changes the further away it is from the surface. The top layer (humus) keeps the lid on healthy soil. Unfortunately, some soil has no humus. This is known as soil erosion.

This week we came across this (https://youtu.be/Y5_37k9HdJw) amazing video and we were reminded once again why we started PolyOrganics in the first place: to feed the soil.

Life on earth is dependent on healthy soil. So for September, we've decided to dedicate our weekly posts to Food for Soil by giving you some Food For Thought with our posts.

Food for Thought: Healthy soil feeds a whole ecosystem of fauna and flora. The Soil Food Web shows how animals depend on organic matter (like compost) in soil to feed themselves. Bacteria and Fungi are at the start of the food web.

Did you know? Bacteria are the most abundant microbes in the soil. They are single celled organisms, and there can be billions of bacteria in a single gram of soil.

Earth Overshoot Day marks the day that humanity has used up the ecological resources that Earth can regenerate in that year. In 2020, this day is 22 August.

So, we're dedicating our August tips to how we can use less resources in our garden and take part in the movement.

This week's tips are dedicated to one of our most valuable resources: WATER πŸ’¦

Have you got another tip on how to save water in your garden? Please share your ideas with us in the comments below!
