Never Give Up

Every K9 has a chance in life. Don't give up on them; give them the opportunity to bring out the best in themselves. All they need is love, attention, and for you to believe in them.

There will be days when you think, "What am I doing? My dog is failing." But remember, he is not failing; he is also testing you. In these moments, your patience and perseverance are crucial. So never give up. The bond you share with your dog is forever.

In canine we trust.

Don't give up.

Happy Father's Day to all the incredible fathers out there! 🌟

Fathers come in all shapes and careers, and sometimes they step into roles left behind. Whether you're a Father, Step-father, Godfather, or a Furry Father, your impact on a child's life is immeasurable. You are the roots from which a child's life begins, nurturing them into a beautiful tree that will one day provide shade and protection for future generations.

Thank you for being the strong foundation and guiding light. Here's to you, today and every day! 🌳❀️

Avoid forcing your dog into a situation they aren't comfortable with as it might result in them growing even more fearful. Instead, work at their pace, gradually demonstrating that there's nothing to be afraid of. Positive reinforcement: Encourage your dog to face their fears with positive reinforcement, special when a intruder hides in a tree...... Go up..... Get him down.... 🀣

Six Essential Nutrients Your Dog Needs
1. Water
Water makes up 70 to 80 percent of a mature dog’s body mass. Without water, your dog will not be able to function correctly. The purpose of water is to help the body dissolve and transport nutrients to cells, regulate body temperature, digest foods, flush away waste and much more. It’s important to make sure your dog has access to an adequate supply of clean water daily.
2. Fat
Fats protect internal organs, regulate body temperature, and promote a healthy nervous system. If fat levels are too low, dogs can also develop dry, itchy skin and dull coats. Dogs require certain fatty acids that their bodies cannot produce naturally. These fats are called essential fatty acids.
Not all fats are good for your dog. Carefully consider the source, quality, and quantity of the fat when choosing a quality dog food.

3. Protein
Protein produces energy and supplies the body what it needs to create a solid structure (skin, nails, muscles, and bones). The body cannot store protein, so it requires a constant supply. Proteins are made up of amino acidsβ€” dogs need 22 amino acids to produce the proteins necessary to survive. A dog’s body can naturally make about half of those amino acids, but the rest comes from the food your dog eats every day. Essential amino acids are, as the name hints at, essential to your dog’s health but sourced from food. Both the amount and the ratio of essential amino acids are important.
To ensure your dog is fuelling their day and body with enough protein, look for dog foods with natural, high-quality proteins as the first ingredient. The type of proteinβ€” fish, meat, or poultry β€” is up to your dog’s personal taste preferences and any other specific dietary needs the protein source may provide.

4. Carbs
Carbohydrates serve as a primary source of fuel and are a dog’s main source of glucose (energy). Carbs are not essential to a dog’s diet; however, they are associated with important vitamins, minerals and plant-based nutrients. Grains, barley, brown rice, whole corn or potatoes are all examples of carbs.

5. Vitamins
Vitamins support many critical roles in your dog’s diet and are essential for growth and health maintenance.
β€’ Vitamin D helps to regulate calcium and phosphorus levels
β€’ Vitamin A helps to boost the immune system
β€’ Vitamin E and C serve as antioxidants
β€’ Vitamin K helps with blood clots and
β€’ Vitamin B12 helps maintain a healthy nervous system

6. Minerals
Just like vitamins, minerals support several critical roles in a dog’s diet. While different minerals provide different benefits, some general functions include bone and cartilage formation, hormone regulation, oxygen flow, and nerve and muscle function. Below are some specific attributes of essential minerals for your dog.
β€’ Calcium and phosphorus make up a large portion of bone matter
β€’ Iron helps to carry oxygen through the body
β€’ Zinc supports proper wound healing
β€’ Selenium helps provide antioxidant support
β€’ Sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium help with nerve transmission and fluid balance

Now we know the basics of what our four-legged friend needs to fuel their healthy lifestyle.

BCI Security and BCI K9 Unit - Park run and K9 showcase

Date: 22 July 2023
Time: 09:00

Early this morning the BCI Security team and BCI Academy students ended off the week by bracing the cold and joining the Ruimsig Tutu Park run/walk.

After having great fun with the students we joined Netcare 911 and various other organizations at Key West Shopping center.

The BCI Academy students showcased what their doggies has learned in Obedience, Agility and Bite work at the BCI Academy.

Ending off the showcase with K9 Bakwena🐾 and K9 Marco🐾
K9 Bakwena demonstrated how a canine is trained to sniff out explosives while K9 Marco did a demonstration of bite work.

We at BCI are super proud of our students and team well done!! πŸ’ͺ🐾

Going for a walk with your dog?
Here is a few essentials to pack

1. Dog treats
Delicious yet healthy dog training treats are a must for dog walks. Recall needs regular rewarding, they are useful for distracting from things that might encourage a barkfest or running off, and they’re handy for gaining attention for photo time!

2. P**p Bags!!
It’s a horrible feeling when your dog decides to squeeze yet another p**p out, and you’ve run out of poo bags!
Whack a couple of extra rolls in your bag, so you don’t get that sinking feeling when your dog decides it’s time for one more turd before hometime.

3. Dog water bottle or collapsable water bowl
Your dog may prefer a puddle, but you want to encourage your dog to drink fresh water! Carry a collapsible dog bowl and a bottle of water, whatever the weather

4. Hand sanitizer
I think we all carry hand sanitiser everywhere these days, but it’s always been essential on a dog walk! Poo picking, grubby ball throwing, and all the other delightful jobs we do for our beloved dogs mean that hand sanitiser is called for on practically every dog walk.

5. Emergency dog lead
A spare lead might sound over the top, but if you happen to lose your dog’s lead, it breaks while you’re out, or you find a lost dog, then you’ll be smug as pie that you’ve packed a spare!

Short, pointy, floppy and folded – our furry friends have ears that are incredibly different from our own. You see their ears everyday – and chances are you give them a good scratch! We’ve compiled a handful of paw-some facts about your pup’s ears!
They can hear around 4 times better than humans.
Dogs have quite sensitive ears, so they can always hear something. Their hearing is so impressive that they can hear electronic frequencies that are imperceptible to us humans. Our furry companions can even hear the bodily vibrations of termites in the walls!
When a dog tilts their head, it may have to do with their hearing.
Although it’s not fully understood by researchers, it’s theorized that dogs may tilt their heads to hear better or pinpoint where a sound is coming from. Not too dissimilar to us when we lean closer to a sound to better hear it!
Dog’s ears aren’t just for hearing – they’re key elements of body language.
Here are a few key positions:
β€’ Naturally held ears indicates your pup is relaxed and comfortable
β€’ If your pooch is raising their ears it shows that they’ve heard something and they’re alert (they’re usually facing the source of interest)
β€’ Ears that are up and forward can indicate aggression
β€’ Pulled back ears are a sign of friendliness
β€’ Ears flattened to your dog’s head show submission or fear

Dogs have around 18 muscles in EACH ear.
The exact number does vary breed to breed, but on average your dog has 18 muscles in each ear! This is why they’re able to rotate, tilt, raise and lower their ears. They can even move each ear independently of the other.
Puppies are born deaf.
Puppies ear canals are closed when they’re born and don’t open up for the first few weeks of their life.
There are about a dozen different dog ear shapes.
You knew that dogs have different ear shapes, but did you know there were so many? Some shapes include:
β€’ Pricked ears, like on Malamutes or German Shepherds
β€’ Round or blunt ears, like on French Bulldogs
β€’ Bat ears, like on Corgis
β€’ Cocked or semi-pricked ears, like on Collies and other sheepdogs
That’s just a handful of some of the ear shapes your dog may have!

With the extreme cold weather conditions over the entire nation here are a few tips to keeping your furry kids warm. 🐾

Spend more time indoors
While dogs will still need to be exercised and taken for walks when it’s cold, these should be shorter and more frequently if possible. This way you can avoid exposing your pooch to too much cold, allowing the two of you to get home and back to the warmth as quickly as possible.

Wrap up for walks
A thermal or fleece-lined jacket can help provide your dog with an extra layer. Coats with reflective details can also help you keep track of your pooch as the darker days draw in.

Keep them dry
Things take a little longer to dry when it's cold and the same applies to your dog's coat. If they need a bath or have been running around in puddles while out on walks, make sure you help them dry with a towel.

Playing games
To keep your dog warm and entertained, you could play fetch, tug-of-war, hide and seek or even incorporate your stairs into some runs.

Bedding
A soft bed and plenty of blankets can provide your pooch with plenty of warmth during the winter. However, if your dog sleeps in a particularly cold part of the house, why not consider buying a draught excluder to stop any warm air from central heating escaping from their area?

Warm their food
Adding some warm water or stock to your dog’s food to help keep them warm. Always make sure that it’s not too hot for your pooch and don’t be tempted to microwave your pet’s meal as it can cause more harm than good.

Remember: Avoid any stock that contains any ingredients like onion or garlic as these are toxic for your dog.

How to keep your dog warm at night
To keep your dog warm at night, it’s best to elevate their bed if possible as the cold ground can make it much harder to keep warm. You could consider getting a self-warming pet mat, which is designed to retain your dog's body heat so they keep themselves warm, or one with a removable microwaveable heating pad.

If you’re feeling the colder weather too, why not let your dog sleep with you, or in a crate in your room so that you’re able to stay warm together?

Have you ever wondered which fruit and vegetables your dogs can eat?
Many fruits and vegetables are low in calorie and provide vital vitamins that your body craves. Did you know that many of these are good for your dog as well?

Here are some great healthy snacks your dog will enjoy.

Apples - Apples are a great source of Vitamin A & C as well as fiber. They are low in protein and fat. Don’t feed your dog the whole apple – remove the core and seeds.
Bananas - contain natural sugars that can give your dog a boost in energy. They also contain amino acids, potassium, vitamin C and B6 and improve heart health and blood pressure.
Blueberries - are great for humans and dogs too! Blueberries contain antioxidants which prevent cell damage and cancer in people and pets. They are also low in calorie.
Broccoli - Dogs can eat broccoli sparingly because it may cause gas. Broccoli contains Vitamins A, C and D, beta-carotene, folic acid, fiber, calcium and chromium.
Brussel sprouts - Although I’m not a big fan of Brussels sprouts, they contain vitamins A, B1, B6, K and G and are a good source of fiber.
Cantaloupe (Melon) - If your dog is overweight or has diabetes, cantaloupe should be given in small quantities because it is high in sugar. However, it contains many nutrients, water and fiber. Do not feed your dog the seeds.
Carrots - Most dogs love carrots. They are good for a dog’s vision as well as his skin and for cleaning teeth and gums. They contain vitamins A, C, D, E and K, beta-carotene, iron, magnesium, potassium and fiber.
Celery - Does your doggie have bad breath? Try feeding him some celery. Containing vitamins A, B and C, this snack can promote heart health and fight cancer too.
Cranberries - Although many dogs do not like the tartness of cranberries, they can be healthy for your dog in small quantities.
Cucumbers - Is your dog overweight? Cucumbers are low in calorie and have few carbohydrates, fats or oils. They contain vitamins C, B1 and K, as well as potassium, copper, magnesium, and biotin.
Green beans - Raw, chopped or cooked, green beans have important vitamins and minerals and are full of fiber while being low in calorie.
Orange - After an orange is free of its peel it can be a tasty treat for your dog. Oranges contain vitamin C, potassium, and fiber.
Peaches - Avoid canned peaches because of their sugar, but once the pit and skin have been removed from a peach, they are a great source of fiber and vitamin A.
Pears - Once the pit and seeds have been removed, pears are rich in copper, fiber and vitamins C and K.
Peas - Cooked, frozen or thawed (not canner), most dogs love peas. You will often find this ingredient in dog food because peas are a natural source of protein. Peas contain vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B6, C and K in addition to thiamin, phosphorus, manganese, fiber and folate.
Pineapple - Pineapple is a great sweet treat for dogs containing vitamins, minerals, fiber and bromelain (helpful in absorbing proteins).
Strawberries - Want your dog’s teeth to be whiter? Believe it or not strawberries contain and enzyme that help to brighten dog’s teeth. They are also full of fiber and vitamin C. Feed these to your dog in moderation because they are high in calorie.
Watermelon - Who doesn’t like watermelon to keep you hydrated on warm sunny days? Watermelon also contains Vitamin A, B-6 and C as well as potassium.

The dog in the picture is named Hachiko.
In 1923, the Japanese citizen (Isabura) found the dog (Hachiko) in a small box inside one of the train cars that he used to take daily to work... and the dog was still a small puppy.. He took it and raised it in his house.. The days pass and Hachiko grows. Isabura used to go to work every day by train, and Hachiko used to drive him to the station and wait at the station until his return about 10 hours later!
One day in the year 1925 (Isabora) had a heart attack at work and died as a result immediately and did not return home! Hachiko waited for his owner at the station platform for 10 full years, until he died too!
A statue of him was designed at the entrance to Shibui Station in Japan, and it is still present.
Loyalty is a word heavier than mountains and longer than ropes.. Its meanings are many: sacrifice, sacrifice, sincerity, giving and loyalty..
