SCHNAUZER PUPPIES: We are concerned about the amount of backyard breeders popping up everywhere. There are tons of ads on social media and especially Junkmail and Facebook. No ethical breeder will just have pups available all the time😡 No ethical breeder will use Junkmail as a selling platform, we are seeing more and more of these backyard breeders selling dogs to people for breeding purposes that does not have a clue on how breeding actually works. MOST IMPORTANTLY no ethical buyer will buy their pups from these platforms, please dont make yourself guilty of this🙏🏻

We see dogs not properly innoculated or innoculated by the breeders themselves, which is illegal😡 The Pretoria and Pretoria North areas, as well as Brits, are notorious for their backyard breeders🤢

We have taken in dogs from these areas in horrible condition, breeders just sell them to anyone and everyone to breed with, please note and this is a big NOTE that KUSA, SACBR registration as well as Canine registry is NOT a guarantee for a healthy dog as a matter of fact most really bad backyard breeders we have worked with used them, no vetting or inspection of their breeders are done, most would not even know which male covered the females as multiple dogs are kept in camps and runs😳 It is purely registration nothing more🤔

Puppies are sold from R2000 rand and up, you cannot get a pup to 8 weeks old and sell them for that amount without skipping important care steps, the pups that were in our care cost a ton more as we only gave them the best food and medical care and mom also got all her supplements🐾💕🥰 We know how badly the moms and dads are looked after in these facilities as we end up often rehabilitating them🥰💕🐾

We are anxiously waiting for new laws to be tabled to address the shortcomings in the breeding environment, a highly profitable industry at the expense of the breeding dogs in most cases due to lack of basic care😡

The schnauzer breeding setup in South Africa is at a tipping point as most breeders are battling selling their dogs, and we are the ones ending up with them😳

A big thank you to our State Vet (Randfontein), PALS, UniSA and PDSA Soweto for doing a successful Steri drive at the Sakata venue.

All in all it was a successful Steri day assisting less fortunate pets in remote areas to be Sterilized and vaccinated.

I just love being part of this Outreach, knowing that each and every pet seen by these vets today are at least cared for and loved.

Contrary to popular belief that kennels / pet hotels are not good for pets while owners are away on holiday.

Countryside Pet Hotel is an establishment with limited numbers of dog or cat bookings - this allows for us to spend quality time with individual guests at any given time!

At no point have any of our guests ever left our establishment sick, stressed or depressed...
quite the contrary...they in fact develop a better sense of individualism, confidence and go home relaxed, fitting back into their home routine as if they never left.

Routine is key.

After all pets are allowed a holiday away from home too.
A change of scenery and making new friends does them the world of good.

Everyone who is thinking of getting dogs should read this!
We need to understand this reality.

***I am a 21st century dog.***
-I'm a Malinois.
Overskilled among dogs, I excel in all disciplines and I'm always ready to work: I NEED to work.
But nowadays I get asked to chill on the couch all day everyday.

-I am an Akita Inu.
My ancestors were selected for dog fighting.
Today I get asked to be tolerant and I get scolded for my reactivity when another approaches me.

-I am a Beagle.
When I chase my prey, I raise my voice so the hunters could follow.
Today they put an electric collar on me to shut up, and you make me come back to you - no running - with a snap of your fingers.

-I am a Yorkshire Terrier.
I was a terrifying rat hunter in English mines.
Today they think I can't use my legs and they always hold me in their arms.

-I'm a Labrador Retriever.
My vision of happiness is a dive into a pond to bring back the duck he shot to my master.
Today you forget I'm a walking, running, swimming dog; as a result I'm fat, made to stay indoors, and to babysit.

-I am a Jack Russell.
I can take on a fox, a mean badger, and a rat bigger than me in his den.
Today I get scolded for my character and high energy, and forced to turn into a quiet living room dog.

-I am a Siberian Husky.
Experienced the great, wide open spaces of Northern Europe, where I could drag sleds for long distances at impressive speeds.
Today I only have the walls of the house or small garden as a horizon, and the holes I dig in the ground just to release energy and frustration, trying to stay sane.

-I am a border collie
I was made to work hours a day in partnershipwith my master, and I am an unmistakable artist of working with the herd.
Today they are mad at me because, for lack of sheep, I try to check bikes, cars, children in the house and everything in motion.

I am ...
I am a 21st century dog.
I'm pretty, I'm alert, I'm obedient, I stay in a bag...but I'm also an individual who, from centuries of training, needs to express my instincts, and I am *not* suited for the sedentary life you'd want me to lead.
Spending eight hours a day alone in the house or in the garden - with no work and no one to play or run with, seeing you for a short time in the evening when you get home, and only getting a small toilet walk will make me deeply unhappy.
I'll express it by barking all day, turning your yard into a minefield, doing my needs indoors, being unmanageable the rare times I'll find myself outside, and sometimes spending my days sunk, sad, lonely, and depressed, on my pillow.
You may think that I should be happy to be able to enjoy all this comfort while you go to work, but actually I’ll be exhausted and frustrated, because this is absolutely NOT what I'm meant to do, or what I need to be doing.
If you love me, if you've always dreamed of me, if my beautiful blue eyes or my athletic look make you want me, but you can't give me a real dog's life, a life that's really worth living according to my breed, and if you can't offer me the job that my genes are asking, DO NOT buy or adopt me!
If you like the way I look but aren't willing to accept my temperament, gifts, and traits derived from long genetic selection, and you think you can change them with only your good will, then DO NOT BUY OR ADOPT ME.
I’m a dog from the 21st century, yes, but deep inside me, the one who fought, the one who hunted, the one who pulled sleds, the one who guided and protected a herd still lives within.
So think **very** carefully before you choose your dog. And think about getting two, rather than one, so I won't be so very lonely waiting for you all day. Eight or ten hours is just a workday to you, but it's an eternity for me to be alone.

Many pet owners have questions about kennels and catteries... many say what they think a kennel is all about, having never visited reputable establishments. When visiting a Pet Boarding facility consider putting together this Checklist :

Firstly -
• Make an appointment to view the boarding facility
• Don’t hesitate to ask any questions
• Make a checklist of questions you would like to ask

Secondly - On visiting the boarding kennel or cattery
Does it smell clean:
Check to see that it looks clean, the owners should take pride in what they have to offer! Also enquire on what previous experience the kennel owner has with animals, their knowledge on ailments and breeds should be vast!
Is there good ventilation and should not be damp
Do the staff and owners interact with the animals and are they friendly with the dogs and cats
Animals adjust well to routine, there should be standard routines with outdoor time for all dogs
Are the kennels a good size to accommodate your breed of dog
How much exercise time is allocated for dogs during the day (It should be at least 30 minutes twice per day during peak and normal times of the year)
Are there toys and cushions available for the dogs and cats.
Are there cat litter boxes for the cats and are the kennels and run areas free of faeces
Important to know that there is care and assistance living on the property at all times. No point leaving your pet somewhere and no one lives there, would be the same as leaving them at home!

On admission
Allow for plenty of time to deliver your pet… If you are stressed this will be communicated to your pet, remember though, that if you have viewed the premise in advance, there is no need to be stressed!!!
2If you are happy and relaxed when you leave your pet, this too will be communicated to your pet
Be sure to communicate to the Boarding facility and ailments, special diets and medications should your pet require this
Also relay any details on any atypical habits that your pet may have
Vaccinations must be up to date, and need to be done no less than 14 days before admission to a kennel or cattery
Bring along unwashed familiar toys, bedding etc which your pet can relate to
Always leave details of an alternate contact person who has the authority to make decisions on your behalf
If you are boarding pets which are elderly, young, disabled, highly strung, or on medication, ask the owners if you provide a few days supply of food so that the changeover to kennel food is gradual. Ensure that the boarding kennel feeds a balanced diet ensuring that your pet goes home healthy and happy.
After the check-in process hand your pet to the staff member, say goodbye and leave… Avoiding long emotional partings.

HAVING DONE YOUR HOMEWORK IN FINDING THE BEST BOARDING FACILITY FOR YOUR PET, AND HAVING PROVIDED ALL THE NECESSARY CRITICAL INFORMATION TO THE BOARDING FACILITY, BE CONFIDENT THAT YOUR PET IS IN GOOD HANDS!

BOTTOM LINE IS : ASK YOURSELF, “WOULD I BE HAPPY TO STAY IN THIS BOARDING KENNEL OR CATTERY?”
