This Youth Day, we celebrate the young South Africans shaping the future of wildlife tourism, including our very own Mabula Youth Team.

Made up of young employees from across the lodge, the Mabula Youth Team brings energy, passion and purpose to everything they do, both for our guests and for the communities around us.

We're equally proud of the Mabula Guide Training Internship Programme, launched in 2019, which welcomes passionate young people from our surrounding communities and equips them with FGASA accredited skills to build meaningful careers in conservation and guiding.

To every young person stepping confidently into a role that protects our heritage and uplifts their community: today is yours. Happy Youth Day!

A drink for the giant.

An elephant pauses at the dam for a refreshing drink. Using its trunk like a giant straw, it draws up water and then curls the trunk into its mouth, sometimes taking in as much as 10 litres at a time.

A thirsty elephant can drink well over 100 litres of water in a single day, making reliable water sources essential for survival.

There are sightings, and then there are moments that stay with you forever.

After keeping a low profile for some time, Q, the first female cheetah brought onto the reserve, has finally introduced her newborn cubs to the world. For our guides and conservation team, the excitement was impossible to contain.

Because behind every successful birth lies years of careful planning, dedication, and a commitment to securing a future for these magnificent cats.

Rare. Beautiful. Hopeful.

This is conservation at its most rewarding.

When rivals settle a score

What looks like chaos is actually an important part of zebra society. These two male zebras are testing each other's strength, using bites, kicks, and powerful shoves to compete for territory and breeding opportunities.

While the battles can look fierce, they're often about establishing dominance and avoiding bigger conflicts in the future.

A perfect reflection of everything that makes the African wilderness so extraordinary.

The sky above, mirrored in the water below, creating a moment of pure tranquillity in the heart of Mabula. Sometimes the most breathtaking sightings aren't the animals, but the landscapes they call home.

A different perspective on what we're protecting.

From above, the dam becomes more than just a body of water; it's a lifeline. These freshwater ecosystems provide drinking water, food, shelter, and breeding grounds for countless species, from insects and fish to birds, reptiles, and mammals.

On World Environment Day, it's a reminder that every healthy ecosystem starts with healthy water.

How many different species do you think depend on this one dam?

What do you think this hippo is trying to say?

This hippo looks like it's having a little too much fun underwater! Those bubbles are created as hippos exhale while submerged, allowing them to stay underwater for up to 5 minutes before surfacing for air.

Bath time in the bush.

An African wattled lapwing splashes through the shallows, giving its feathers a proper clean. Bathing helps to keep their feathers in top condition for insulation and flight.

A quick splash, a few shakes… and good as new.
