International Paypal Donation - Found on website. It is a Section-21, non-profit organization that was started in 2005 and is run entirely on sponsorships and donations. SAPREC was founded by Carol Walton who has been working with penguins and sea birds for over thirty y

ears. With the help of their vet, Dr Frans de Graaff from the Hartenbos Animal Hospital, together they established the Seabird and Penguin Rehabilitation Centre in Mossdustria, Mosselbay, South Africa. SAPREC started with the fundamental reason of rehabilitating sea birds and penguins and their release back into the wild, hence the centre's core purpose being Rescue, Rehabilitate and Release. Many of the sea birds being rehabilitated are under threat and are in dire need of organizations like SAPREC to help with the fight against the decline in biodiversity. The African Penguin especially is declining at a rapid rate and is actually on the IUCN Red list of threatened species and classified as highly endangered. The African Penguin is the primary sea bird being rehabilitated at SAPREC. The major causes of the rapid decline of the African Penguin are over fishing, which affects their breeding, molting and their entire life cycle. Other problems include; pollution, avian malaria, and an imbalance in the ecosystem which causes an increase in the predation of the African Penguin. Rehabilitating these sea birds offers them a better chance at survival and in the long run helps us get closer to our goal of saving this highly endangered species. It has now been officially confirmed that the whole of the southern cape is now under our care. This has doubled the area of coastline that we look after. A lot has changed recently. The area of coastline under our care has been 141kms. Recently the closest seabird centre to us , tenikwa, has closed down its rehabilitation facilities. The area of coastline has now increased to 488km which will now have a huge impact on us and our finances. Goofy season 😳 Our resident African Penguins are in various stages of moult. Moulting is when the penguins will lose/replace all of their feathers at once, and take about 4 weeks to complete. We have a little update on our baby blue "Alto". This little one is almost ready for its big release day. With some extra fish, water proofing and a confidence boost from our resident, Jesse, it's almost time to say goodbye. With every rescue case it is SAPREC's main goal to get each individual healthy enough for release, we couldn't be happier to see this blue thriving. 💙
