The Black-headed Caique is also known as the Black-headed Parrot. It is found in subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests or swamps. This parrot is endemic to northern South America, specifically northern Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and southern Venezuela.

The Black Headed Parrot is a social being. In the wild, they are generally seen in pairs or flocks up to 30 birds, calling loudly during flight.

Known for their high energy they are popular & wonderful pets. These small parrots are very playful and have mischievous personalities. They are the clowns amongst the parrot world and are quick to learn new tricks with their high intelligence. In the right conditions their life expectancy is about 30 years.

Parrots are members of the order Psittaciformes, which includes more than 350 bird species.These include Parakeets, Macaws, Cockatiels and Cockatoos. Although there are many different types of parrots, they share a few common traits. To be classified as a parrot, the bird must have a curved beak, and its feet must be zygodactyl... which means there are four toes on each foot with two toes that point forward and two that point backward.

One of the many surveys done on parrots noted that amongst the top 10 best bird pets... were the Cockatiels, African Greys, Cockatoo's, Macaws and Amazons.

The African Grey Parrot

The history of African Grey parrots kept as pets dates back over 4,000 years. The ancient Greeks valued parrots as pets, and this custom was later adopted by the wealthy. Roman families often kept parrots in ornate cages, and parrots were prized for their ability to talk. The Portuguese sailors kept them as companions on their long sea voyages.

African Grey's are extremely intelligent birds and are often thought of as the most prolific speakers amongst parrots. They are said to be capable of amassing vocabularies of up to 1000 words or more.
