Agrihub Marks Milestone with Inaugural Commercial Delivery

This week, a historic moment unfolded at the Philippi Agrihub as we welcomed the first commercial delivery of 27 tons of ginger roots, sourced directly from Madagascar.

The Agrihub's market agent, Rhoda Market Agency (RMA), started the process of value addition, employing methods such as sorting, grading, and packaging to transform the bulk ginger into smaller packaged units tailored for wholesale distribution.

RMA is ready to distribute the repackaged product and will offer the ginger at wholesale prices to buyers across various markets. In turn, the buyers will either retail the product or use it as a primary ingredient in the creation of other ginger-based goods.

Already, the demand for this ginger has shown promising signs, with one buyer taking the opportunity to purchase 2 tons of ginger specifically for juice production.

This milestone marks a significant achievement for the Agrihub, heralding a bright future for small-scale and commercial farmers alike. By bridging the gap between local producers, commercial buyers, and the surrounding community, it paves the way for greater access to fresh produce and a diverse selection of food basket items through the establishment of a vibrant fresh produce market.

Whilst this value-add activity and delivery to buyers is a first step in the activation of the market, it is still secondary to the opening of the market trading floor, which is coming soon.

Stay tuned as the Agrihub continues to redefine the landscape of agricultural trade in Philippi and surrounds, one delivery at a time.

Celebrating the success of young farmers at the Philippi Agrihub. These talented individuals are producing quality deli products for one of the country's largest suppliers, marking the closure of their journey from training to supply within six months.

This incredible accomplishment is a testament to the value of investing in young people and giving them opportunities to develop their skills and talents. The Roots Agripreneur Youth Project, launched in November 2022, has provided 200 young people in poverty-stricken areas with such opportunities, focused on new, niche, or high-value crops that are not typically grown in the region.

A partnership between AfriPonics, Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator, and FirstRand Empowerment Foundation, this initiative has been making waves in the agricultural industry, with remarkable success in two provinces, NW and WC. The project has shown that young South Africans can have a bright future in agriculture.

Congratulations to the young team and the entire Roots Agripreneur project for this outstanding achievement!

WATER SHUTDOWN IN PHILIPPI ON TUESDAY 8 NOVEMBER

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate will be doing a test-run (‘dummy’) shut-off of the water supply to the Gugulethu, Nyanga, Philippi, Brown’s Farm and KTC areas on Tuesday, 8 November 2022, from 09:00 until 16:00.

Residents are advised to store sufficient water in clean sealed containers for domestic use during this period, and to keep taps closed to prevent any water loss and damage when the water supply is restored.

The shut-off of the water supply will enable the safe assessment of the water supply network to prepare for the actual shutdown when a water meter will be installed on the City’s bulk water main.

The City sincerely regrets any inconvenience caused.

MAYOR LAUNCHES NEW PHILIPPI AGRIHUB

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis and Ald. James Vos celebrated the launch of the new Philippi Agrihub together with representatives from the City’s Economic Growth departments (Urban Catalytic Investment; Area Economic Development; Property), Provincial Government, Department of Agriculture, and other guests.

Since 2018, a great deal of effort and expense by National Treasury, the City of Cape Town and the Philippi Economic Development Initiative (PEDI) have gone into re-configuring and upgrading the Philippi Fresh Produce Market into a fully fledged agri-hub with the facilities to develop, support and grow the small scale and emerging farmers of the Cape Flats and to connect them to fresh produce buyers.

Today, the Philippi Agrihub offers a large variety of vegetables, herbs and indigenous produce supplied by over a hundred small scale farmers who are trained to cultivate vegetables through natural farming methods. The farmers benefit from access to a wider market and better prices that help ensure their sustainability; and their fresh produce is either sold whole, or as value-added produce that provides consumers and the food service sector with ready-to-cook vegetables.

Cape Town Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis, said, “There are very few things in government that have the power to both offer possibilities for economic growth on one hand and help safeguard liveability, sustainability and resilience on the other. Urban green space is one of these rare things. The Philippi Agri-Hub is a shining example of how urban green space can be put to use in helping to alleviate poverty through jobs, and contributing to food security and resilience in the face of climate change.”

The unique opportunity that the Agrihub presents for the growing community of small scale and emerging farmers was also emphasized by the various speakers at the launch. Daryl Jacobs, DDG of the WC Department of Agriculture, committed his department’s support to the venture; and Mary-Ann Parr of U Can Grow Africa reported on progress in creating a database of over 1000 small scale farmers within a 150km radius of Philippi and the importance of having a dedicated hub to promote fresh produce marketing and sales.

Thomas Swana, CEO of PEDI, spoke to the history of the market which was developed for this purpose 17 years ago, but which had never operated as intended until PEDI’s intervention 4 years ago that established various business components, such as the Philippi Urban Agriculture Academy; the agri-processing and value-adding services; a composting operation that converts organic food waste into organic compost; and the establishment of a self-sustainable market for both small scale farmers and buyers in the vicinity of the Cape Flats. He also announced that the Agrihub will start to supply retail giant Shoprite with fresh produce.

Included in the audience were formal and informal business owners, Ward Councillors for Subcouncil 12, 13 and 17, and members of the Ward Development Forum in Philippi, who have all contributed to the establishment and opening of the Agrihub that will benefit the Philippi economy.

Thomas Swana closed the speeches with a rousing three cheers as a vote of thanks for the opening of the Philippi Agrihub.

LITTLE WATER IN PHILIPPI THIS WEEKEND

Maintenance work will be carried out on the Cape Flats from 01:00 on Friday, 16 September until 03:00 on Monday, 19 September. This will cause low water pressure, which may become a 'trickle flow' at times in Browns Farm/Philippi as well as parts of Khayelitsha Site C, Manenberg and Mitchells Plain.

Residents will start to experience the impact on Friday as the water is drained out of the pipeline network. The most impact will be on Saturday when the actual maintenance happens, and then it will start improving again on Sunday when the water starts filling the distribution pipeline again

Ahead of the work getting underway on Friday, residents are being advised to store water in clean, sealed containers or in baths or sinks, and to do laundry ahead of time. The city is also asking that residents use grey water for flushing the toilet and to avoid watering gardens or filling swimming pools.
