Meet handsome Boogie😍, a male cat who recently experienced a blocked bladder. Fortunately, he is on the mend and recovering well. Blocked bladders in male cats are potentially life-threatening and need immediate attention.

Here’s what you should know:

What is a Blocked Bladder?
A blocked bladder, or urethral obstruction, occurs when a cat’s urethra (the tube that allows urine to pass from the bladder) becomes obstructed. This prevents urine from leaving the body, leading to a buildup of toxins in the bloodstream and causing severe complications.

Causes
The most common cause of a blocked bladder is the formation of crystals or stones in the urine. These can combine with mucus to form a plug that obstructs the urethra. Stress, diet, and dehydration can also contribute to this condition. Male cats are more prone to blockages due to their narrower urethras.

Signs to Look For
If your cat shows any of these signs, it could indicate a urinary blockage:
- Straining to urinate with little to no output
- Frequent trips to the litter box
- Crying out in pain while urinating
- Licking the ge***al area excessively
- Lethargy, vomiting, or loss of appetite

Why It’s an Emergency
A blocked bladder can cause the bladder to rupture and lead to kidney failure if untreated. Immediate veterinary care is essential to relieve the obstruction, flush the bladder, and stabilize your cat.

Prevention and Care
Maintaining a healthy diet, ensuring adequate water intake, and reducing stress can help prevent urinary blockages. If your cat has had a blockage before, special diets that prevent crystal formation may be recommended.

If you suspect your cat is struggling to urinate, please contact our clinic right away. Early intervention can save your pet’s life! We’re here to help – just like we did for Boogie.

It’s important to help pets stay calm and safe during the fireworks. Here are some tips to help:

1. Create a Safe Space: Prepare a quiet, comfortable room where pets can retreat to when fireworks start. Ideally, this space should be away from windows and outside noise.

2. Keep Pets Indoor: Bring your pets indoors during fireworks. Closing windows, curtains, and playing calming music can help reduce the noise.

3. Use Calming Products: Calmeze can help ease stress for dogs and cats during loud events. This works best when started in advance. Please note that all pets are different and some may require a multi modal approach.

4. Stay Calm and Comfort Your Pet: Pets often pick up on their owner's emotions. Remember to stay calm, and if your pet seems anxious, you can offer comfort but should avoid overly coddling as it may reinforce fear.

5. Desensitization: If the fireworks are still a few days away, you can gradually desensitize your pets by playing recordings of fireworks at a low volume and gradually increasing it to help your pet get used to the sound. This works best if started from young but can still be taught to older pets.

6. Exercise Before Fireworks: Take your dogs for a long walk or engage them in play earlier in the day, so they are more relaxed and tired by the time fireworks start.

7. Ensure Microchips Are Up-to-Date: Fireworks can cause pets to panic and escape. Ensuring pets have updated identification will help reunite them more quickly if they get lost.

8. Consult with a Vet for Severe Anxiety: If your pet has severe anxiety, it may be worth discussing with the veterinarian whether anti-anxiety medication might help during the fireworks.
