Wilgerbosdrift Stud Farm - South Africa

Wilgerbosdrift Stud Farm - South Africa The farm known today as Wilgerbosdrift, was purchased in 1997 and the building of stables and the creation of paddocks and camps commenced in 1998.

Having previously operated as a “hobby breeder”, boarding a few mares at her parents Mauritzfontein Stud, Mary Slack decided to establish her own farm and to enter the world of the “commercial breeder”. The original 5 mares transferred from Mauritzfontein in May 1998. The first ever yearling draft consigned by Wilgerbosdrift were sent to the 1999 National Yearling Sales. The draft comprised just t

hree yearlings, two c**ts and a filly. Both c**ts proved more than useful, getting the new operation off to a flying start. In each of the 6 subsequent years, the Wilgerbosdrift draft has increased, in terms of both quantity and quality. This is evidenced by Wilgerbosdrift’s rapid rise to the top of the vendors lists. Leading consignors by average in both 2004 and 2005, Wilgerbosdrift’s WONDER LAWN became the highest priced yearling in South African history when he was knocked down for R3,3 million at the 2005 NYS.

WAR FRONT SON IS FIRING AWAY!

Exciting young stallion Fire Away sports some excellent statistics. His first crop has yielded 35 runners, of which 22 have won, and four are stakes winners.
A further three horses in Fire Away's first crop have been stakes placed.
Fire Away's first crop is headed by graded stakes winners Egyptian Mau (G3 HSH Princess Charlene Starling Stakes) and My Golly Molly (G3 World Sports Betting Langerman), East Cape star Luna Halo, and Listed TAB Spook Express Stakes winner Explosive Bond.
His first-crop sons My Golly Molly and Zil Moris finished first and third in the G3 Langerman.
Fire Away's second crop, current two-year-olds, include 20 runners of whom seven have won. This crop is headed by G2 TAB SA Nursery winner Fire Attack. The latter's Nursery win received a notable boost when fourth place finisher Proceed came out to win the G1 Gold Medallion.

With several promising but lightly raced runners featuring in this crop, this crop looks set for better results still.
However, Fire Away's statistics for the current season make for truly impressive reading. For active stallions with 50 or more runners in 2023-2024, Fire Away ranks as the leading sire by stakes winners to runners. His total of 6.9 % stakes winners to runners ranks higher than such star stallions as Vercingetorix (5.7%), Rafeef (5.7) and reigning champion sire Gimmethegreenlight (4.8).
Fire Away appears to be emulating his own sire War Front, who also sports some eye catching statistics. Not only is War Front the sire of more than 115 stakes winners (he is also sire of more than 80 black type placed horses), but the son of Danzig is coming up with 11% stakes winners to foals.
At the time of writing, War Front had been responsible for 24 G1 winners and his offspring have earned more than $131 000 000 in stakes.

1-2 for Fire Away
Wilgerbosdrift's promising sire Fire Away looks to have a pair of smart two-year-olds to his name in the form of Spirit Of Levana and French Flame.
The latter pair finished first and second in the second race run at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on Wednesday, with both horses holding feature race entries.
Trained by Glen Kotzen, Spirit Of Levana made it two wins from just three starts when she won Wednesday's www.tabgold.co.za Juvenile Plate in courageous fashion.
Under Mohammed Hassan Alabdulmalik, the Fire Away filly jumped out to make the running and she duly did so.
Spirit Of Levana kept finding and she held on gamely to best her paternal half-brother French Flame by half a length. French Flame caught the eye in second as he was still very green and ran around in the closing stages.
Her trainer described Spirit Of Levana as a "filly out of the top drawer", and Wednesday's winner has been entered in the G1 Thekwini Stakes.
Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, Spirit Of Levana is out of the Fort Wood mare Close The Gap.
She was a R300 000 buy from the 2023 Cape Yearling Sale.

Under a confident ride from regular rider Calvin Habib, the Tony Peter trained Pistol Pete was always prominent in Sunday’s TAB Telebet 0861 000 822 Juvenile Plate (1160m).
The c**t showed plenty of courage when challenged by favourite Bjorn Ironside and dug down deep to score by three parts of a length.

Turffontein double for Fire Away
Wilgerbosdrift's highly promising young stallion Fire Away had a weekend to remember this past week. Not only did Fire Away's first crop daughter Luna Halo claim Friday's Breeders Guineas Plate, but the Wilgerbosdrift resident also had an eye-catching double at Turffontein on Sunday.
Fire Away came up with a fourth first-crop stakes winner when his three-year-old daughter Explosive Bond ran out a convincing winner of the Listed TAB Spook Express Stakes (2400m) on Sunday.
Trained by Paul Matchett, three-year-old Explosive Bond was given a clever ride by Philasande Mxoli, who slipped the field someway out and kept finding more in the closing stages to register a one-and-a-half-length triumph.
Bred by Ascot Stud (Pty) Ltd, Explosive Bond has now won three of 13 starts, with the filly having won her last two races in a row.
Explosive Bond, who is out of the Trippi mare Liwa, was an R50 000 buy from the 2022 KZN Yearling Sale.
Her sire Fire Away is also the sire of promising two-year-old Tintamarre, who ran out an impressive of the Gauteng Guineas Day 3 February Maiden Juvenile Plate (1160m) on Sunday.
Not disgraced on debut, when finishing four lengths off the winner, the Alec Laird trained c**t showed good improvement on Sunday, with Tintamarre running out a convincing three length winner of Sunday's heat.
Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, Tintamarre is out of the Tiger Ridge mare Oyster Pond.
The c**t was an R450 000 buy from the 2023 National Yearling Sale.
Fire Away, whose eye-catching first crop also includes such graded stakes winners as Egyptian Mau and My Golly Molly, has three lots on offer at the 2024 Cape Yearling Sale.
