Cats like predictable lives! They don’t particularly like changes and are creatures of habit.
If you look, you’ll see your kitty has claim to specific toys, places to curl up and spaces to move around in. They also claim you! A jealous cat is probably rivalling with another pet, object or person for your attention.
Cats are territorial and competitive, especially if their status or territory is compromised so they don’t become jealous unless they have a reason.
Your attention-seeking and talkative kitty’s are generally more the jealous type!
Jealous cats generally hiss, growl & swat at whatever they are jealous of. They may become more aggressive and start scratching, biting, fighting & shredding things! They may invade your personal space if you're holding a baby, playing a video game, on your computer or even holding your cellphone! Don’t be surprised if they knock things off the table either! Worst case they may start urinating outside their litter box or even spray on the objects they are jealous of … to make a point! To get your full attention.
What could have caused your kitties jealousy? Has someone new moved in; have you brought a new baby or pet home; are you spending more time doing something you haven’t done before or has your kitty’s favourite spot been moved or changed?
The easiest way to calm your jealous cat is to spend more time with them. Call them when you get home & give them cuddles. Play with interactive toys, reward good behaviour with treats and make sure your kitty keeps ownership of their personal space & things, including their food and water bowls and litter tray. Give your cat priority attention before you give your time to the person, pet or object that they're jealous of.
When all else fails, see your vet. Don’t assume uncharacteristic cat behaviour is down to jealousy. It may be a medical condition if they constantly hide, hiss or stop eating.
Luckily most of the time jealousy is natural and harmless.
