Your Guide to Everything Lick Mat: Lick Mat Recipes for Dogs, Lick Mat Ideas, DIY Lick Mats, and More!

Are you looking for new ways to enrich your pup’s life? A lick mat for dogs is a great way to do just that!

What is a Lick Mat?

A lick mat is an interactive toy that can be filled with food or treats for your pup. The mat has ridges and nubs on it that allow the dog to lick and nibble away at the food or treats. This type of activity stimulates their natural instinctive behavior as well as providing mental stimulation while they figure out how to access their reward. It also helps keep them occupied while you are busy doing other things such as cooking dinner, cleaning up around the house, or running errands. The grooves in the mats allow you to smear food around, peanut butter, cream cheese, pumpkin puree, or other yummy homemade treats onto the mat and give your pup something tasty to savor! Plus, they come in various sizes and shapes so you can find one that fits perfectly in your pup's bowl.

The Benefits of Using Lick Mats

Lick mats can provide multiple benefits for your pup including mental stimulation, physical activity, better behavior, improved digestion, reduced stress levels and more. By providing mentally stimulating activities like licking peanut butter off of a lick mat you can help reduce boredom which can lead to destructive behaviors like chewing furniture or barking incessantly.

Using a lick mat also allows your pup to enjoy their meal without inhaling it. This is beneficial if they are prone to bloat or have an issue with eating too quickly. Lick mats also help improve digestion since they require dogs to take smaller bites while licking rather than scooping up large chunks. When making homemade meals for your dog this is especially great as you can spread out any fresh food.

Licking mats help release endorphins which can help reduce stress and anxiety in some pups. Also, the licking motion helps relieve tension in the jaw muscles which can help reduce stress levels in anxious pups. For those who struggle with separation anxiety or have difficulty at night-time, licks mats may be just the thing for them! It also gives them something fun to do when they need a distraction from any stressful situations around them.

Another great benefit of using lick mats is that it encourages natural foraging behavior in pups. When we think of foraging behavior, we usually think of wild animals searching for food—but this same behavior can be seen in domestic dogs as well! By providing them with something like a lick mat that allows them to search out tasty morsels hidden within its crevices, you are helping them engage this natural behavior safely within their own home environment. Not only does this provide physical enrichment but mental enrichment as well!

Matted dog hair is not only an eyesore, but it’s also a pretty big discomfort to your dog!

A dog’s coat can become matted for a number of reasons including when they get wet and after a long time without grooming. It’s crucial that you address the problem as quickly as possible as untreated matted fur can be near impossible to resolve without shaving them.

Check out our suggestions below on how to help your furry friend get through the problems associated with matted hair.

What is matted hair?

Matts are tangled clumps of hair in a pet’s coat. Matting commonly occurs on the back of ears, the tummy, arms, and legs. It’s more likely to happen to long-haired dogs and is more prevalent during the shedding season.

It’s essential to extract these lumps of hair before it causes discomfort and pain to your best furry friend. You don’t want to wait until the matted hair gets larger, as it’ll be harder to remove. Matted hair in dogs can cause skin irritation, prevent proper temperature regulation, and become a home for fleas and parasites.

Here’s what you can do to remove matted hair and prevent it from forming in the first place:

1. Brush your pooch regularly

The best way to prevent matted hair is by regular brushing. Brushing and combing your dog’s coat will help detangle the hair and smoothen it. Different types of hair need different types of combs. The use of a proper brush will help to brush and comb the hair more effectively and safely. Using the wrong brush can result in injuries such as bleeding and irritation.

You can also use detangler cream or spray to help brush through the hair easier.

One of the most common mistakes by dog owners is combing only the top layer of the coat. Ideally, you want to get down to the bottom layers of the coat. You can do this with a technique referred to as ‘line brushing’. With this method, you want to start brushing at the lowest point of your dog’s body. Brush against the grain to remove any hair that would normally be missed using normal brushing techniques.

How often you brush your dog’s coat depends on how long and thick the hair is. If your pooch has long fur, a curly coat, or fine hair, you’d want to brush it as often as possible, preferably daily. Other types of hair only need a once a week grooming session.

2. Trim their coat

A well-kept shorter coat can help make brushing easier and will prevent the formation of matting. There are many other benefits that come with trimmed hair, such as better hygiene and better air movement throughout the coat.

3. Visit a professional dog groomer regularly

Some types of canines such as poodles, Bichon Frises, and other mixed-breeds have very fine hair, which can be difficult to maintain. In these cases, it’s recommended to visit a professional groomer who has the skills, training, and the right equipment to help groom your lovely pup.

Nobody wants to see their furry friend in pain…

So book your dog in at Pampered Pooch to see to that stuck fur! Your dog will be so thankful. 🙏🏼

This is something everyone should see. This x-ray is of a 2 week old puppy.

When you get your 8/10 week old puppies, please keep this image in mind. Their bones do not even touch yet. They plod around so cutely with big floppy paws and wobbly movement because their joints are entirely made up of muscle, tendons, ligaments with skin covering. Nothing is fitting tightly together or has a true socket yet.

When you run them excessively or don't restrict their exercise to stop them from overdoing it during this period you don't give them a chance to grow properly. Every big jump or excited bouncing run causes impacts between the bones. In reasonable amounts this is not problematic and is the normal wear and tear that every animal will engage in.

But when you're letting puppy jump up and down off the lounge or bed, take them for long walks/hikes, you are damaging that forming joint. When you let the puppy scramble on tile with no traction you are damaging the joint.
You only get the chance to grow them once.

Once grown - around 12-18 months depending on their breed, you will have the rest of their life to spend playing and engaging in higher impact exercise. So keep it calm while they're still little baby puppies and give the gift that can only be given once. 🐶❤️🐶

I look at my dog, and there’s this purity in his eyes, something so damn real it cuts through all the noise. He doesn’t care about the crap we let consume us, doesn’t get tangled in the mess of human drama. He’s just there, in the moment, wagging his tail like every second is a gift, like the world is a place full of endless joy just waiting to be uncovered. There’s a beauty in that, a simplicity that feels like a lost art, something we used to understand but let slip away somewhere along the line.

He doesn’t need much. A bit of food, a scratch behind the ears, and a warm spot to curl up at night. That’s it. In return, he gives everything—his loyalty, his love, no questions asked, no strings attached. It’s unconditional, pure in a way we’ve forgotten how to be. And I can’t help but wonder where we went wrong, how we ended up complicating our lives with all this bullsh*t—our doubts, our fears, this endless, gnawing hunger for more, always more.

We’re always chasing something, something just out of reach, and in the process, we lose sight of what really matters. We build these walls, create these elaborate mazes for ourselves, and then wonder why we feel so lost, so disconnected. But my dog? He’s got it figured out. He doesn’t care about any of that. He lives in the here and now, finds joy in the simplest things, in the things we overlook because we’re too busy chasing shadows.

There’s a kind of wisdom in that, a truth that’s so obvious it hurts. We could learn a thing or two from him, if we just stopped for a moment, if we just let ourselves see the world through his eyes. Maybe we’d realize that all the things we think matter—the worries, the fears, the endless striving—they’re just distractions from what’s real, what’s right in front of us.

So I look at my dog, and I see the way he lives, the way he loves, and I think, maybe he’s got it right. Maybe it’s us who need to change, who need to strip away the layers of nonsense we’ve wrapped ourselves in. Maybe we need to get back to that place where life is simple, where love is enough, where a wagging tail and a warm place to lay your head at night are all you really need.
