As we go into 2022 I think it is important for us to clarify what CAT CARE does and what our focus has been and will continue to be going forward.

We have a responsibility to our members and those that donate to us to adhere to our constitution.
Our constitution states the following:

OBJECTIVES
a) The Association’s main objects shall be to:
i) neuter and spay feral cats;
ii) feed feral cats;
iii) monitor and rehabilitate feral cats whenever possible.
b) The Association’s secondary objects shall be to:
i) educate the public of the importance of sterilization, and the advantages of feral cats.

AREA OF OPERATION:
The Association shall operate within the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipal area, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa.

So to clarify - our focus is FERAL CATS AND THE STERILIZATION OF FERAL CAT COLONIES
TO FEED, STERILIZE AND PROVIDE VET CARE FOR FERAL/STRAY CATS.

The many vets that support us provide us with welfare rates for feral and stray cats only.
We do not get welfare rates for tame / domestic cats /pets.

We do not have premises nor do we have a shelter where we can take in tame cats and kittens.

Cat Care is run solely by volunteers.

Daily we get calls wanting us to assist with sick and injured cats that have owners that cannot afford a vet - unfortunately our mandate and responsibility is ONLY FERAL / STRAY CATS.
Our funds can only be allocated to these cases.

Cat Care can unfortunately not assist with food for tame cats and kittens in homes.

The Cat Care page and email cannot be monitored 24 hours a day - in the case of emergencies please do not email or contact us via Facebook.

What is pet noise phobia? It is an extreme fear of a sound where a pet will do anything to avoid a certain noise. Common noise phobias include thunderstorms, firecrackers and/or gunshots. There are a number of factors that determine a pet’s reaction to certain noises, such as their age, socialization and experience. Here are some signs that your pet could be suffering from noise phobia. CalmTrophan is available from your local Vet.

Want to know what’s actually going into your furry friend’s snacks? Try whipping up a batch of these easy, homemade cat treats. If you’re unable to make your treats small enough for an easy bit, simply make them as small as you can and break each treat up before giving it to your cat.

TUNA AND CATNIP CAT TREATS:

Ingredients:
· 1 can tuna in water / brine, well-drained and flaked
· 1 cup all-purpose flour
· 1 tablespoon dried catnip
· 1 large egg

Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 180°C. Process all ingredients in a food processor until a smooth, thick dough forms.
2. Form dough into 80 (1/4-teaspoon-size) balls. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, and slightly flatten each ball.
3. Bake in preheated oven until golden and crisp, about 15 minutes. Cool completely.
4. Store in air-tight container up to 5 days, or freeze.

Thanks to the vomeronasal organ (or Jacobson's organ) located just above a dog’s mouth, they are able to detect hormones that all animals release, (including humans). These hormones help them differentiate between friendly and threatening animals and identify potential mates. This ability helps them to identify humans’ emotional states, and can even tell them when someone is pregnant or ill.

Looking for a nice, simple dog treat recipe to try? These quick & easy peanut butter dog treats are a favorite. They’re easy to make and quick to bake, and as an added bonus they’ll make your kitchen smell awesome.

PEANUT BUTTER DOG TREATS
Ingredients:
· 2 cups flour
· 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter*
NB - Please ensure that the peanut butter you use does not contain Xylitol
· 2 eggs
· 1/4 cup water

You can use other kinds of peanut butter such as chunky, but if you do you’ll probably need to add more water to the mixture in order to make it into workable dough.

Instructions:

1. Preheat your oven to 180°C.
2. Mix together your flour, peanut butter & eggs in a large bowl until slightly combined.
3. Add in a little bit of water (approximately one Tbsp at a time) until the mixture becomes wet enough to roll out as dough.
4. Roll out your dough & cut out your favorite shapes with some cookie cutters.
5. Place your treats onto your baking sheet & cook for about 15 minutes. For a little bit of crunch, take out once the bottoms start to darken.

If you use regular sized cookie cutters this recipe will make 36 treats (it makes 3 baking sheets worth of treats). For storage these can be kept in the pantry for a week. Since this recipe makes so many treats I usually keep half in the pantry and freeze the other half for later.

Kennelling a dog who suffers from separation anxiety can be quite difficult. They often show very destructive behaviour whilst in their kennel and many refuse food. If you are not opposed to medicating your dog, consider using a product like CalmTrophan which contains natural ingredients that can be safely used for long periods.. It is fast acting and reduces stress and anxiety. Let your pet stress less and play more. CalmTrophan is available from your local Vet/

Camping with Your Dog: A Checklist

Camping is better with dogs. Dogs have a way of reminding you to savor the small joys, to take in your surroundings one sense at a time, slow down or speed up, be here now, and provide a sixth sense (and 5 others 10 times sharper than yours) that can come in very handy when out in the wilderness.

Like any adventure, camping with your dogs will need some planning, and in order to make the most out of it and make it an enjoyable experience for all, there are some basic items we shouldn’t leave home without.

Whether your dog is a seasoned camper, or you are planning your first adventure with your brand new puppy, I hope this is useful to you, and may it enhance your camping experience for years to come.

Don’t leave home without…
CalmEze Plus Tablets
I.D. tags/contact information
First aid kit
Leash, collar, and harness + an extra leash
P**p bags or shovel
Food and water bowls
Food/treats and proper food storage
Safety Light
Puzzle/food dispensing toy or chew
Mat or soft crate/tent
Tick/mosquito/flea repellent
Bell (Depending on where you go, you may come across wildlife. A small bell attached to your dog’s pack or harness helps alert wildlife of your presence and give them a chance to scurry.)
