XENA, WARRIOR PRINCESS
Xena started walking funny on the 26th January 2023. At the time no one knew what was to come.
Five weeks later, after starting treatment for Biliary, and numerous tests done, she collapsed and couldn't walk at all. Couldn't eat, she had to be syringe fed.
Panicked is an understatement.
She had been seen by Dr Marlies Bohm, a vet specialist, who suggested that it might be FIP.
FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis) has cost the lives of too many cats. Up until recently there was no cure. It is a mutation of the Feline Coronavirus (FCoV) and has 4 distinct forms. Wet, dry, ocular, and neurological. Some forms can occur simultaneously.
Xena was trapped as a feral for sterilization in August 2022 at an industrial area next to a township in Port Elizabeth/Gqeberha, South Africa. They estimated her to be between 2-3 years old. When I fetched her from the vet, with her ear tipped, I realized that she wasn't feral at all, just scared. There was no way a tame, starving cat could be returned to that area. She would not survive. So I took her home.
From the beginning she has been such a character. She crept instantly into our hearts. She made a space for herself, putting the other cats firmly in their place, beneath her. She adores attention and is quite clingy at times. But who wouldn't want that much love from a cat?
When I realized through the fog of reacting to her symptoms and all the vet visits and tests that she probably had Neurological FIP my heart stopped. Xena?!!! No!!!! Not Xena!!!
Being in rescue I have had to have quite a few cats euthanased in the past. FIP had no cure! Until now...
Treatment is usually 84 days but depending on the blood tests, cats might need to extend their treatment period.
The cost is huge. I didn't know how I w
