🌙 The Moonlight Chronicles: Bushpigs 🌙

Bushpigs (Potamochoerus larvatus) are some of the most elusive animals to hunt, often only leaving signs of their presence in ravaged fields. These large yet surprisingly stealthy creatures are known to move through dense foliage with ease and are capable of swimming, making them difficult to spot. Your best chance to catch a glimpse? A stakeout under the light of an early rising moon or full moon, when these nocturnal wanderers come out to forage.

Found in parts of the Northern Province, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Eastern Cape, bushpigs live in family groups called sounders, led by a dominant male and female. When threatened, they can become formidable, using their powerful tusks to defend themselves - this is especially frequent during mating season and when protecting the young. Although omnivores, their diet mainly consists of plant matter like roots, fruits, and tubers.

Boars, in particular, make for impressive trophies. This is due to their difficulty to hunt and the surprise of what you could be hauling home - their tusks are not always visible, especially at night. Mature males can weigh between 70-150kg (154-330lbs). Mature boars stand out from the sounder with telltale signs like their larger size, prominent tusks, scars, warts on their nose, and territorial behaviour. If you’re lucky enough to find one of these elusive animals, it’s a hunt you won’t soon forget!
