Pet diabetes is a chronic condition where the body cannot regulate blood sugar (glucose) levels. Here’s an overview of the key points:

Symptoms
- Increased thirst and urination
- Increased hunger
- Weight loss
- Lethargy
- Ankles touching the ground (cats)

Diagnosis
- Blood and urine tests to check glucose levels.

Treatment
- Insulin injections, usually twice daily.
- Dietary management. Special diabetic foods are often recommended for dogs and cats. Certain diabetic cats can be reversed with food alone.
- Regular monitoring. Owners can check their pet's blood glucose levels at home or the vet will check periodically to assure the right dose of insulin.
- Weight management and exercise.
- Consistent feeding times

Potential Complications
- Blindness and cataracts
- Increased susceptibility to infections.

IMPORTANCE OF DEWORMING

Deworming is an essential part of maintaining your dog’s health. Here’s a guide to deworming your dog:

Why Deworming is Important:
- Health Risks: Worms can cause a variety of health issues in dogs, including vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, anemia and even more severe complications like intestinal blockages.
- Zoonotic Risk: Some parasites can be transmitted to humans, particularly children.

Types of Worms:
- Roundworms: Common in puppies and can cause a pot-bellied appearance.
- Hookworms: Feeds on blood and can cause severe anemia.
- Tapeworms: Often contracted through fleas, can cause irritation around the a**s.
- Whipworms: Affect the intestines and can lead to bloody diarrhea.
- Spirocerca lupi: Can cause damage to the oesophagus or aorta.

Symptoms of Worms in Dogs:
- Visible worms in feaces or around the a**s.
- Vomiting or diarrhea, sometimes with blood.
- Weight loss despite a healthy appetite.
- Scooting or dragging their bum on the ground.
- A distended or bloated abdomen.

Deworming Schedule:
- Puppies: Begin deworming at 2-4 weeks of age and repeat every 3 weeks until they are 16 weeks old. Then can be given 3 monthly.
- Adult Dogs: Deworm every 3 months. It is important to deworm everyone in the house including yourself.

For best effect get dewormers from your local veterinarian or petshops. The dewormer from your local supermarket might not be as effective as necessary.

Type of Deworming Medication:
- Tablets or Chewables: Can be given directly or hidden in food.
- Liquids: Usually administered directly into the dog's mouth with a syringe.
- Topicals: Applied to the skin, usually between the shoulder blades.

Post-Deworming Care:
- Monitor for Side Effects: Mild side effects like diarrhea or vomiting can occur. Contact your vet if they persist.
- Clean the Environment: To prevent reinfection, clean your dog’s living area and dispose of feaces promptly.
- Flea control is critical in the management and prevention of tapeworm infections.

Please ask your local veterinarian for advice on which deworming to give your pet.

🐶🐶BILIARY

Biliary, otherwise known as tick bite fever, is a serious and often life-threatening disease in dogs caused by the protozoan parasite Babesia. The disease is typically transmitted through the bite of infected ticks.

Symptoms
- Fever
- Lethargy (unusually tired or weak)
- Pale or yellow mucous membranes (gums or eyes)
- Dark Urine
- Loss of Appetite
- Weight Loss
- Rapid Breathing or Difficulty Breathing

Sometimes patients develop complicated biliary where several organs are affected. These patients have to be hospitalised and require intensive treatment.

Diagnosis
Diagnosis is typically done on a combination of clinical signs, history and laboratory tests.
A blood smear can be examined under a microscope to look for the presence of Babesia parasites within red blood cells.

Treatment
Treatment for biliary involves the use of specific anti-protozoal medications which can kill the Babesia parasites. In severe cases, supportive care like blood transfusions, fluids and medications to manage anemia (low amount of red blood cells) and other complications may be necessary.

Prevention
Preventing biliary is primarily about controlling tick infestations. Regular use of tick-preventative treatments, such as tick collars, spot-on treatments or oral medications, is crucial. Checking your dog regularly for ticks, especially after outdoor activities and promptly removing any ticks can also reduce the risk of infection.

If you suspect your dog has biliary, it's essential to seek veterinary care immediately, as early diagnosis and treatment significantly improve the chances of recovery.
