Pets have much sharper hearing than we do, which means the sound of fireworks can feel painfully loud and alarming. To help reduce their anxiety, prepare a quiet, cozy space where they can retreat to feel safe. Closing windows and drawing curtains can help muffle the sound and reduce the visual impact of bright flashes. A calm, familiar environment with their favorite toys or blankets can work wonders to soothe them.

Some pets may benefit from calming music or white noise to drown out the firework sounds. You could also try distraction with interactive toys or pet-safe treats, but always remember to stay close by to comfort them if needed. Halloween’s spooky fun can come with some unexpected hazards for pets. At Eldoraigne Animal Clinic, we’re here to help you plan a pet-safe Halloween so that your pets can feel comfortable and protected throughout the festivities. Outdoor activity picks up around Halloween night, with trick-or-treaters, loud costumes, and flashing lights. To avoid stress and accidents, it’s usually best to keep pets indoors on Halloween night. This way, they’re safe from loud noises, fireworks, and the stream of unfamiliar visitors at the door.

Be cautious with Halloween decorations and props. Small or breakable parts, open flames in pumpkins, and string lights can be irresistible to pets but dangerous if chewed or knocked over. Battery-operated candles or pet-safe decorations are a great alternative. And if you do dress up your pet, avoid any costume with dangling accessories or tight bands that could easily become a choking hazard. Even better, choose something simple like a themed collar or bandana that won’t get in the way of their comfort or safety.

Stick to pet-safe treats, and keep the candy bowl out of paw’s reach!

If you’re planning on dressing up your pet, make sure the costume doesn’t restrict movement, breathing, or vision—and always supervise them while they’re in costume. For pets who aren’t fans of costumes, a festive bandana or collar might be a better choice.
