What a last few years 🤣

We did it! We caught the the little angel.
With no sponsorship, no funds, no trap...nothing... Including already outstanding vet bills...
We did it.
It was a lot of driving, some cat food, eog food, kfc...nothing helped.
We thank life for borrowing us her trap.
It was rain.
It was slipping in the mud...but this was all the work of my two colleagues. Ruben and Tyla. Scar Charity and animal health shop
They chased after this baby for far.
Then we tried the trap.
Didn't work
Then they chaced her into an enclosed area and a swimming pool net 🤣
Finally she got tired (so did they).
They just got home with her (after hours, in the dark). Now that is dedication.
Thank you Pretoria Animal Buddies for the advice, zambinfor the trap, Vets 4 Pets Mayville Animal Clinic for all dr hills help and Doreen for checking up on the baby daily.

We really appreciate everyone that helped to get the baby safe but especially to my two colleagues*i am bragging a bit*.

If anyone would like to make a donation towards our organisation, we will so appreciate it.
We can only continue to do the work we do with your help as monetary donations has been none and petrol and wear and tare on the car is expensive 🫰 (apparently kfc is as well).

We really need assistance from the public to continue doing the work we do especially now that it gets to December and donations is slim to nun.

Another baby warm tonight 💕🥰

🔥DISTEMPER ALERT🔥
Rietvleiview Country Estate - Pretoria
5/11/2025

Canine distemper is a highly contagious viral disease that affects the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems of dogs. It is spread through airborne droplets from an infected animal's coughs, sneezes, or through direct contact with bodily fluids. Symptoms include fever, coughing, nasal and eye discharge, and lethargy, which can progress to more severe signs like vomiting, diarrhea, and neurological issues such as seizures, twitching, and paralysis. There is no cure, and treatment is supportive care to manage symptoms, though vaccination is highly effective for prevention.

Symptoms
- Early/Respiratory: Fever, coughing, watery eyes, nasal discharge, and lethargy.
- Gastrointestinal: Vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite.
- Neurological: Muscle twitching, seizures, head tilting, circling, and paralysis.
- Other: Thickening of the skin on the nose and paw pads ("hard pad disease").

How it spreads
- Airborne droplets: Infected dogs can release the virus through coughing and sneezing.
- Direct contact: Contact with bodily fluids like nasal secretions from an infected dog.
- Indirect contact: The virus can survive on surfaces like food bowls, and be transferred by contaminated objects, clothing, or blankets.

Treatment and prevention
- Treatment: There is no specific cure for distemper. Treatment focuses on supportive care, including fluids to prevent dehydration, antibiotics to treat secondary bacterial infections, anti-seizure medications, and hospitalization for intensive care.
- Prevention: Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent canine distemper. A core vaccination is recommended for all dogs.
Important considerations
- Distemper is a serious and potentially fatal disease, especially for puppies and unvaccinated dogs.
If you suspect your dog has distemper, contact a veterinarian immediately.
Recovered dogs may continue to shed the virus for several weeks, so isolation and disinfection are critical to prevent further spread.

Today, we were contacted to assist in the capture of a feral dog that is underweight. We promptly responded, but encountered several challenges. Our organization lacks a large trap, similar to a baboon trap. Moreover, we only have one vehicle, which is our private car used for rescue operations. We also required veterinary assistance. Additionally, we need funding for petrol, as the extensive driving is causing wear and tear on our vehicle. We are grateful for the support received from Doreen, Vets 4 Pets Mayville Animal Clinic, our team at Scar Charity, and the animal health shop. Although we have not yet captured the dog, we will persist in our efforts. If you are willing to contribute, please find our banking details below. Your assistance will be instrumental in ensuring the dog's safety. Vets 4 Pets Mayville Animal Clinic Scar Charity and animal health shop

What a year.
We haven't had time to update.
But here is a small update.
We get a lot of homeless people that want food and stuff for themselves but also people and not only homeless people but people that are going through a tough time that need help with their animals.
Sometimes sick animals. Sometimes food for their animals. Some days we run out of free samples of dog/cat food to give out...
We ran out of our tin and soft food donations. We gave one man from a shelter a small bowl of soft food for his doggy and some other goods.
We try and help with parasite treatment if we have extra. Most our work is in our community because people mainly do outreaches in rural areas but what about the households in your own neighborhood that needs that extra helping hand?

I know, but please don't say it... People who can't look after their pets shouldn't have pets but the reality is they are going to have pets. Some shelter people look after their pets better than what most people do. For them, it is all they have ...

This week has ripped us apart. We had a positive leukemia kitty that was spiraling quickly. (Passed away the next day at the owners house)
We had a neglected doggy that new owners took in.
A doggy with severe tooth problems (he was old). Had to be euthanased. (Thank you themba diere kliniek for helping)
The guy living at the homeless shelter's doggy passed away (the one we gave food to).
The rescue pup is doing very well.
But...every animal that is lost feels like a failure.
We are suppose to look at all the ones we could help but it is the ones we couldn't help that keeps me up at night.

We sit and wonder if we could have done more.
We have nightmares.
Some days i go on the stairs with my head in my hands.
When was the last time we had a full nights sleep?
When was the last time i could turn my phone on silent?
Some days you forget to eat.
Some days you go home acting like you had the best day ever and most times you put on a fake smile but inside it kills you because your mind runs around and wonder...what if???
It is the what if' that gets us...

One day we had a kitty that the owners had to euthanze and i was ugly crying. I was sitting in the middle of the floor. A lady came in and had to have her doggies nails clipped. I couldn't. One of my colleagues came in and asked if we could clip nails, i just looked up with tears in my eyes and he went out without saying anything. He knew...now is not a good time. The lady was very understandable and came back the next day to have the nails clipped.

We grow attached to every animal that comes into the door, even if it is just people bringing them in for a vaccination or to buy dog food. Every animal we try and arrange some vet payment because the owners can't pay a vet.
We arrnage between rescues and swop out animls like we are trading pokemon cards because sometimes we have space for rabbits, sometimes we have space for kittens. Sometimes Pawesome Wacky Whiskers Rescue and Rehoming can take in adults and we can take in kittens and vise versa.

Offcourse we have Pretoria Animal Buddies always standing ready to help incase we need it.

We have phone calls at 2am from people needing kitten milk.

Now, do not misread my post. I am not saying none of these people care. I am not saying none of them pay. I am saying sometimes people just need a helping hand.

So if you see me just sitting on the floor or the stairs, just know...now is not a good time...
