GDV - a life-threatening, yet preventable disease.
Meet Mison, who presented to us with severe bloating — a true emergency in dogs. He was quickly diagnosed with GDV (Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus), a life-threatening condition where the stomach fills with gas and twists on itself. This cuts off blood supply, leading to shock, organ damage, and if untreated, death.
💉 Immediate treatment included placing a stomach tube to relieve the gas and starting fluid therapy. Yesterday, our Specialist Surgeon, Dr. Hermien Viljoen, performed a Gastropexy — a surgery where the stomach wall is sutured to the abdominal wall to prevent this from happening again.
🐶 Are certain breeds more at risk?
Yes! Large, deep-chested breeds such as Great Danes, Boerboels, and Ridgebacks are especially susceptible.
🥩 How to help prevent GDV:
✔️ Feed smaller meals more frequently instead of one large meal.
✔️ Avoid exercise, running, or playing right after eating.
✔️ Consider a preventative gastropexy — often done at the same time as sterilisation.
We are pleased to share that Mison is recovering well after surgery and is expected to make a full recovery. 💙🐾
