So much to celebrate this past weekend, but I just want to do a separate post for this special girl. She is my absolute heart dog and we have a bond that I know I will never find in another dog again.

After a looooong abscence - here we go...
Australian Shepherd Breed Standard #44

Ending off the ASCA breed standard with the preferred size of the Australian Shepherd
Males : 20 - 23 inches ( 51 - 58.5cms)
Females:18 to 21 inches ( 45.5 -53cm)

Height is measured from the ground to the top of the withers ( the area along the top of the shoulder blades, just behind the base of the neck i.e the top of the crest of the first thoracic vertebrae)

In all instances, quality should not be sacrificed in favour of size

Promising Development in Cancer Treatment Study
Researchers at Colorado State Universityhave been investigating a natural compound derived from the feverfew plant as a treatment for several lethal canine cancers, including lymphoma and hemangiosarcoma – two top killers of our Aussies. The compound d may also be effective for other cancers such as leukemia, histiocytic sarcoma, and mast cell cancer.
This preliminary work, carried out on canine and mouse cancer cell lines, has provided data that will be useful to further research as well as clinical trials. Funding for the study was provided by the Morris Animal Foundation. ASHGI is a sponsor of that grant.

Sweet 14-week-old Golden Retriever puppy Percy is on the road to recovery after spending some time in our ICU over the weekend! He was an excellent patient and feels better already thanks to some time in our state-of-the-art oxygen kennel. In this photo he had popped his little head out to say hello to our staff during one of his treatments, and we don’t think he could get any cuter!

How Percy ended up spending the weekend with us is an important story that his caring owners allowed us to share to help keep other pets safe. Percy and his big brother were rough-housing, when Percy’s collar got stuck on his brother’s mouth. Percy panicked when he was suddenly stuck, and while twisting around trying to escape he caused his collar to become even tighter around his neck! Thankfully their owner noticed quickly that something was wrong and freed Percy before he lost consciousness. When his owners rushed him to see our ER team, Percy was struggling to breathe, drooling profusely, and very distressed. Radiographs showed that Percy had fluid in his lungs (non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema) caused by the time he spent struggling to breathe. Pain medications and oxygen support quickly helped Percy breathe more comfortably as his body worked to heal from the experience.

The strangulation hazard of dogs playing while wearing collars is a hidden danger that many pet owners don’t know about, but a story we hear with some frequency in the ER. Thankfully Percy’s story has a happy ending, but if his owners hadn’t been there to intervene it could have been tragic. Please, get your pups microchipped so they have a permanent form of identification, and then take those collars off when they’re playing with or interacting with other dogs!

Australian Shepherd Breed Standard #43

Ending the "gait" part of the breed standard

An exaggerated gait only wastes energy and is not effective. The Aussie's gait suggest harmony. The most effective movement does not always stand out and attract attention. However, its quality is never mistaken because all parts blend without disrupting the interworking of other parts.

"The ideal Australian Shepherd is found not in the extremes, but his excellence is found in the balance between the extremes" Taylor

It was a family affair at SUPA 7'S with Aragon qualifying for adult stakes and both Ava and Lucca qualifying for puppy stakes. It was once again one for the books!

The amount of attention and detail that went into the event could clearly be seen - thank you Johnny, Byron and all involved in making this such an amazing evening (especially Royal Canin SA for their generous sponsorship and our steward Willem, who graciously kept us all in place 😉)

It was great to catch up with old friends and see familiar faces - thank you for all the ringside support and congratulations to all the winners 🎉🏆🏅

Australian Shepherd Breed Standard #42

Continuing on with the "gait" part of the breed standard

There is an effortless quality in the stride, which is deliberate without wasting energy. When viewed from the side the dog’s topline should be strong and appear level between the shoulders and the loin. When the dog is trotting there should be no bobbing, as the withers should remain level in motion. Any up-and-down movement wastes energy and indicates another structural inefficiency.
