Our favourite colour in summer? GREEN!

Hence the name of the next Salad recipe!

Great Green:

Use Aquaponically grown greens for improved taste and aroma.

Ingredients:

* 4 Tablespoons olive oil.
* 2 Tavlespoons White wine vinegar
* 1 Tablespoon Dijon Mustard
* 1/2 teaspoon salt
* 1 / 2 teaspoon ground black pepper
* 1 pinch white sugar
* 1 teaspoon chopped fresh parsley
* 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
* 2 cloves garlic chopped
* 1 avocados - peeled, pitted and cubed
* 4 cups mixed salad greens
* 1/2 cup sliced almonds
* 60 grams feta cheese, crumbed

Method:

In a large bowl, whisk together the olive oil, white wine vinegar, mustard, salt, pepper, sugar, parsley, lemon juice and garlic.

Add the avocado and stir to coat with the dressing.

Just before serving, add the salad greens and toss to coat with the dressing. Sprinkle sliced almonds and feta cheese over the top.

Another week another recipe!

Use Aquaponically grown greens for improved taste and aroma

Ceasar Salad Supreme:

* 6 Cloves garlic, peeled, divided.
* 3/4 cup Mayonnaise
* 5 Anchovy fillets, minced
* 6 tablespoons grated Parmasan cheese.
* 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce.
* 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
* 1 tablespoon lemon juice
* Salt to taste
* Ground black pepper to taste.
* 1/4 cup Olive oil
* 4 cups day- old bread, cubed
* 1 head Curly lettuce, torn.

Method

Mince 3 cloves of Garlic, Mayonnaise, Anchovies, 2tbs of the Parmasan Cheese,
Worcestershire sauce, mustard and lemon juice.
Season to taste. Refrigerate until ready to use.
Heat oil over medium heat. Cut the remaining3 cloves ove Garlic into quarters and add to hot oil.
Cook and stir until Brown then remove garlic from the pan. Add bread cubes to the hot oil. Cook, turning frequently, until lightly browned. Remove bread cubes from oil and season with salt and pepper. Place lettuce in a large bowl. Toss with dressing, remaining parmasan cheese and seasoned bread cubes.

With Lettuce season on the rise we have some exciting salad recipes to share.

15 to be exact, we will be sharing over the next few weeks.

Arugula salad:

Use Aquaponicially grown greens for improved taste and aroma.

* 4 cups Young arugula leaves, rinsed and dried
* 1 cup cherry Tomatoes, Halved
* 1/4 cup pine nuts
* 2 Tablespoons grape seed oil or olive oil
* Salt to taste
* 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
* Freshly ground black pepper to taste
* 1/4 cup grated Parmasan cheese
* 1 large avocado - Peeled, pitted and sliced

Method:

Using a large plastic bowl with a lid, combine arugula, cherry tomatoes, pine nuts, oil, vinegar and Parmasan cheese.

Season with salt and pepper to taste. Cover and shake to mix. Divide salad onto plates and top with slices of avocado.

Aquaculture Innovations and Aquaculture Solutions are now working in close Collaboration.

After Working together for many years Leslie and I have built up a trust relationship that only a handful of people ever experience. Starting the New Year with all the challenges of the past, its 2023 where we have upped our game.

We are not an Island and trustworthy associates such as another ally in Lance, the Aquaculture and Aquaponics sciences in South Africa can only go from strength to strength. The Sea is getting depleted so let do something about it.

Aquaculture Innovations will still be presenting the Aquaculture and Auaponics training in Pretoria whereas Leslie will be presenting in Cape Town, Durban, Nelspruit, Polokwane and George.

Urban Aquaponics had a special visit today.

WHPS - Waterkloof House Preparatory School joined us this morning on Aquaponics educational presentation explaining why Aquaponics is the go to sustainable farming method we need to introduce to our next generations.

After which we had a wonderful walkabout and in action learning about aquaponics and the fish we use to grow our produce. They were able to see all the plants, fish and whole process in action.

Thank you WHPS for allowing us to share our passion in farming to our next generation of farmers.

How does Bioneem oil work?

The most active component in Bioneem oil is known as Azadirachtin. Azadirachtin repels insects via the interference of the insect hormone systems. It reduces insect feeding, making it harder for insects to grow and lay eggs. Azadirachtin can also repel and reduce the feeding of nematodes (roundworm)

Bioneem oil is very effective against:

*Whiteflies
*Fungus gnats
*Aphids
*Mealybugs

Let's jump to pesticides...

We all want Pesticide or Chemical free fresh produce to ensure we stay healthy.

We use Neem oil as a Preventative Measure against pests
Yes it is necessary to keep pests at bay ensuring we produce quality fresh produce.

So next question. What is Neem oil?

Bioneem oil is an organically certified natural preventative/pesticide found in seeds from the Neem tree. It has been used for hundreds of years to control pests and diseases. Bioneem oil contains Azadirachtin which is the most active component for repelling and killing pests.

We spray Bioneem as a preventative measure once a week to keep the pests and unwanted "stuff" off your fresh produce.

Recently it became so important to know where your food comes from. How it is grown and packaged. Talking only fresh produce here, we were always tought your greens are healthy for you and you need to consume every last bit on your plate.

But how do you know for sure your greens was treated with respect and ensured it has all the nutrients you need? It is so easy to plop a plant into the ground, make it grow and somehow you have homegrown wellness.

Thank you for all the questions raised and comments. Urban Aquaponics started as a hobby in my back garden in Centurion (Valhalla) and then expanded to our site in Gerardsville, (The picture shows the start of the fish house in 2017) where year for year we were expanding the system, mainly because of market draw.
We then took over Aquaculture Innovations where the IP for the training and the online shop presides.
This all happened, most certainly because of my interest in the science but also the drive to get healthy (Scientifically proven by us) produce to the market.
We don’t use pesticides and have to keep a constant eye of the system, where there are weak plants the aphids will attack them. We spray a bio friendly Repellent preventatively every week which derives from the Neem tree. Well there is so much information which cannot be answered here.

What a great week we had, 27 delegates sent to us by the Department of Forestry’s, Fisheries and Environment to attend our Intensive Aquaculture Course. Gillian did her thing by dissecting a fish, this time under a high definition camera where the delegates could watch every move on the big monitor. They determined the biomass practically in our dams and had a great visit to Garry Hall, thanks Garry. Wild aquafeeds supplied us with samples of all sizes of feed to show they delegates, thanks other Garry.

What a privilege to have a group of final year Veterinarian students visit us yesterday, being taught to check for parasites, dissect trout and to prepare samples for lab tests.
This is also done on our aquaculture course (Practical Fish Farmer course) with detailed inspection seen on our large screen microscope.
