WHEN IS ENOUGH, ENOUGH!
A 15-year-old dog with cancer, who was suffering from malnutrition, had horrible teeth, had kidney failure, and due to old age, was half blind and half deaf, recently came in. This dog was going through such excruciating pain, it couldn't even eat anymore. This dog went day in and day out through this pain, and what did the owner do about it, absolutely NOTHING.
We all know how difficult it can be to let go of the ones you love, how difficult it is to say goodbye. We know how difficult it is to lose someone after many years by your side, we know that this right here is one of the toughest things you can ever go through. We all know how much a person needs a shoulder to cry on, and the type of tears that are shed when we lose a loved one.
Every person eventually comes to a point in their lives where they have to make the decision to send their fur babies to Heaven, whether it is due to old age or any other circumstance. The important part is knowing when to do so.
When your dog can't walk anymore, when they can't eat anymore or relieve themselves anymore - when these signs appear, it is already long past the threshold. The answer is simply that, cancer and disease that is left to fester is a death sentence to any creature. The right choice is often the most difficult one to make because we selfishly want to hold on to the last vestiges of life that is left in our pets, without empathizing with their pain. Our pets have the privilege that so many humans don't, to pass on quietly and with dignity, and not have to suffer the ravages of disease any longer.
In this case, Mona the Labrador X was brought to our attention by a Realtor, and in the end, we had to make the decision to send her off to Heaven. This dog could have passed on next to her mother, to whom she stayed loyal for more than a decade, instead, she had to pass in the arms of us strangers to her.
After many years of love and devotion, it is our duty as pet owners to make the right decision, at the right time, and for the right reason. It is better to be there until the end for our loyal companions.
