This is Hachikō. He was an Akita born on Nov. 10, 1923 in Japan. He was sold to Hidesaburo Ueno, a scientist at the University of Tokyo. Ueno named him Hachi after the number 8, which is considered lucky in Japan, and the two became inseparable. Every day, Hachi walked to Shibuya Station with Ueno for his commute, and he returned each evening to pick him up. This routine continued daily until May 21, 1925. On that sad day, Ueno left for work and never returned, after suffering a fatal cerebral hemorrhage while lecturing.

Despite Ueno's absence, Hachi continued to wait for him at the station daily. Hachi bounced between several homes, including some miles from Shibuya, before settling with Ueno’s former gardener. No matter the distance, Hachi returned to the station daily to wait patiently for his owner. In 1932, a former student of Ueno’s published an article about the dog's vigil, and Hachi's story blew up. Hachi became a symbol of loyalty, and “-ko,” a suffix used as a sign of respect, was added to his name. Now called Hachikō, he started receiving pets and treats from people at the station while he awaited his owner.

In 1934, a life-sized statue of the loyal dog was erected at Shibuya Station, and Hachikō himself attended the unveiling ceremony. Hachikō died the next year at the age of 11. Each year since 1936, a solemn ceremony at Shibuya station has been held to honor his devotion. Hachikō's ashes were buried beside Ueno’s in Tokyo. After nine years, nine months and fifteen days, Hachikō was finally reunited with his beloved owner he missed so much. For his perseverance and loyalty, we bestow upon Hachikō the extremely rare (and long overdue) 15/10 ❤️

My purchase of a well bred purebred dog does not condemn another dog to death.

My purchase of a well bred purebred dog is not going to cause an increase in the number of dogs in the shelter.

My desire to have a dog with a predictable temperament from a healthy line does not result in another dog in the shelter not getting adopted.

My careful research on the most responsible breeders who meet all requirements is not the problem. That's not what you should be upset about.

It's not what you should blame.

I’m not the one who brought these dogs into this world irresponsibly and left them in a shelter.

Responsible breeders are not the ones taking these dogs to animal shelters either.

It's my home, my life and my choice what kind of dog I want to bring in. Maybe I need a working dog, sports dog, show dog, or just a companion dog of a specific breed that suits me best.

No matter what reason I choose to support a serious breeder, it will not put an animal protection dog to death.

A breeder who has health tests, temperament tests and pedigree for his dog is not contributing to the number of stray dogs.

The number of stray dogs in the world is a problem, but it is not a problem made worse by serious breeders and those who buy from them.

Your neighbor who quickly jumps over the border to some breeder and gets a "purebred" dog without papers because he is so cheap and poor, contributes to the problem.

Your friend who spontaneously bought a puppy is contributing to the problem.

This person on willhaben multiplying the trendiest designer mix asap is contributing to the problem.

Your relatives who absolutely have to have their dog covered once, "so she can experience what it's like to be a mother" or because "she's just so sweet" are contributing to the problem.

Your old school colleague who bought a hat dog with a lot of energy without taking the time to research his needs and character, and eventually sees that it doesn't fit well with his lifestyle, contributes to the problem.

A serious breeder offers lifelong support. A serious breeder would never allow his dogs to end up in a shelter in the first place.

It's understandable to be angry about the number of homeless dogs in the world, but if you look closer, you'll find your anger is misplaced.

If you look closely you will find that serious breeders and those of us who buy dogs from them are just as angry as you are.

We only point fingers at the real culprits.

Let's get real for a second.

The world often paints a picture that dogs who live together are best friends and do everything together.

This is just not true. Many many many multidog household utilize management in different situations to allow dogs personal space to enjoy things such as:

- feeding time
- chew time
- play time
- attention time

This. Is. Normal.

Just because someone utilizes management, doesn't mean their dogs don't enjoy each other's company or have fun together. It just means that there are certain activities that they prefer to do on their own.

And I will tell you firsthand that implementing safe space zones and time apart can be so beneficial to the relationship between two dogs.

Think about it-- do you enjoy doing every single activity that you do at home with your spouse, family, or sibling RIGHT there? I don't think so.

So let's normalize management between dogs who live together!!
