! ! ! Chocolate is toxic to dogs ! ! !

Hide those Easter eggs where your furry friends will not find them first...

Sure, it's a delicious treat for humans, but why can't dogs eat chocolate? Chocolate toxicity in dogs is a common problem, and it often stems from accidental ingestion. While chocolate is toxic to dogs, the level of toxicity depends on the type of chocolate, how much they ate, and how big the dog is. Let's take a closer look at what happens if a dog eats chocolate and what to do if your dog eats chocolate.

Understanding Dogs and Chocolate: Is It Harmful?
Chocolate is toxic to dogs because it contains theobromine and to a lesser extent, caffeine. Humans metabolize theobromine easily, but dogs don't. Dogs process theobromine and caffeine slowly, which allows these toxic compounds to build up in their systems and cause clinical signs associated with chocolate toxicity.

But when it comes to toxicity, not all chocolate is the same. What happens if a dog eats chocolate is different based on the type of chocolate they consumed. Baker's chocolate and cocoa, for example, are considered to be the most toxic, then dark chocolate, then milk chocolate. Is white chocolate bad for dogs? It's less toxic than other types, but still not recommended.

What Happens if a Dog Eats Chocolate?
Signs of chocolate poisoning in dogs can depend on your dog's size and how much chocolate they've consumed.

If you have a medium or large dog who consumes only a small amount of chocolate, then you may only notice signs associated with an upset stomach, such as vomiting or diarrhea.

But if your dog consumes a large amount of chocolate or if you have a small dog who consumes chocolate, then they may develop the following signs of chocolate toxicity:

Seizures
Tremors
Irregular heart rate
Heart arrhythmia
Internal bleeding
These signs are usually preceded by an onset of extreme excitement.

Chocolate toxicity in dogs is a common problem, and it often stems from accidental ingestion.

Step by step brick by brick the future of JSVC being set in stone.

A pet microchip is not a tracker but rather a more permanent form of identification, for when the unthinkable happens and your pet goes missing.

The chip contains a unique serial number allocated to your pet. When your pet is scanned with a microchip scanner at the vet or welfare, this number will come up on the scanner screen.

The serial number would be searched on the database and the owner’s contact number/s will come up with the pet’s details for easy identification.

If your pet has been microchipped, make sure to go to your vet regularly to scan the chip and make sure your details on file is up to date.

In rare cases microchips do fail and could be caused by:
Faulty microchip
Outdated, faulty scanners
Exposure to Xray’s / MRI and/or CT scan may lead to failure to read the serial number with the microchip scanner.
Microchips can also push through the skin and fall out
Microchips can also migrate in the body and be found in the legs or hind; therefore, it is very important to scan the entire body of the pet when scanning for a microchip.
A lot of pets are found with microchips that have not been registered. This means that the scanner will pick up the serial number of the chip but when searched on the database no details will be available for the pet and/or owner. The owner needs to make sure the chip has been registered and that all information is up to date. (Your information is not public and is protected by the POPI Act)

Even if your pets are indoor pets, make sure you have them microchipped.

Be prepared not despaired.

Valentines Day is February 14, all over the world.

•Don't accidentally kill your Valentine's cat by buying lilies.

•All lilies (genus Lilium) are potentially lethal to felines. Get some nice roses, tulips or carnations instead.

•This token of concern will make you even more loved!

Dead sure!

And an addendum, a quote from a post of [Curtis Clark](https://www.facebook.com/groups/144798092849300/user/100000161440251/?__cft__[0]=AZWHrv5lB1S8TBEt1ERsbgmiPf1EkGV85jJf6Tzm7soczJqHh1VmxbN6z84GHCfxtijkGcxXOAqhEsCIaOuAjE7dcf4Xg8n5LyrRmxXj8yVHKpYugIFZsM2-TsbYGuNXpTUbb3za6Iy-jvhdtW9JRi8Q&__tn__=-]K-R);

"The primary treatment for lily poisoning in cats is “IV fluid push”, to flush the kidneys and protect them from permanent damage.

You didn’t know lilies were poisonous to cats?

True lilies, in the genus Lilium, destroy cats’ kidneys. Not dogs, not people, only cats. All parts of a lily plant are toxic: leaves, stems, flowers, even the pollen, which can dust a cat’s fur, and then they lick it off. Rapid treatment is essential, and often results in complete recovery. Waiting until there are symptoms means that the kidneys are already permanently damaged.

Not all plants called “lily” are true lilies. Daylilies (Hemerocallis) are also poisonous to cats, but for different reasons. Peace lilies, Peruvian lilies, calla lilies, lily of the Nile, and a lot of other things named “lily” are not true lilies. None are as toxic as true lilies, and treatments differ.

So you’ve been careful not to include true lilies in your cut flower arrangement. Good on you! But cut flowers are often sprayed with biocides to preserve their appearance. These, too, can be toxic.

With Valentine’s Day coming up, if you have a cat, don’t buy any arrangement with true lilies, and if you’re not certain, avoid anything called “lily”. And because of the biocides, keep all purchased cut flowers out of the reach of all pets."
