Just as we finally found a home for the last two chinchillas that were looking for a new forever home we received received 6 more literally two hours later. This is a beidge pair and 4 offspring. I will sex them tomorrow and seperate the males and females. We also need to find homes for 3 sugar gliders and a large male red tail boa.

Spot the animal... We have just returned from a few days rest in the Kruger park and every day we were amazed at how amazing animals can be and we saw things at places we never expected. One or two of those memories captured in these photos.

Every day we hear that our animals are in great condition. Yes, we give them all our attention but we cannot Thank OK Foods Fontainebleau enough for the privilege of receiving their fruit and veggies that have reached their best before date. Andrew, Johan and the staff thank you very much. Fresh foods beat any packed or pelleted foods any day, and the huge variety on their shelves is amazing and their specials even more. Go see it for yourself!

Lovely visit to a school in Mayville PTA where my mom was raised. Glad we can make a difference and let some people conquer their fears or let them understand that some fears are irrational. Animals are awesome but yes, not all animals are good pets!

We have some amazing creatures and what a privilege it is to share them with curious minds plus Caitlin and I really enjoy what we do every single day. And tomorrow we get to do it again!

Thank you! May is fully booked as well as June right until the school holidays and July has a few spots left. Thank you for the opportunity to share our awesome creatures but also for learning that awesome creatures are not always suitable pets.

Apprehension turns to wonder. The hear, smell, touch and feel makes the encounter "real" and unlike images or video clips the experience and things learned on this day will stay in their minds and memories for years to come.

Why SPCA?

Join the movement!

SPCA ROODEPOORT is in possession of a Kusa registered English bull terrier female called Jesse. She is microchipped to Dania Skon of Adorabull and Spca Roodepoort will not allow the legal owner of this dog (Adorabull) to claim her and secure her future!!!!

The manager and committee of Roodepoort Spca are not answering further queries or attempts to find a common ground. The NSPCA - National Council of SPCAs has stated that every branch acts autonomous re day to day issues which means not every branch will check for a chip, contact the owner on the chip or allow you to claim your pet back!!!

It's the luck of the draw which branch of the Spca your animal arrives at.

This is not a bashing post.. this is seeking clarity and assistance for the sake of ONE DOG and the future of many many more animals that are chipped to rescue organisations and could possibly not be claimed due to this grey area and lack of national guideline and regulation.

We are standing up for the rights of individual owners and that of Non profit rescue organisations pertaining to the right to claim animals that are microchipped to owners and NPOs alike and who are legally their owners for life.

To work with integrity, fight for justice and fair treatment across the country for the sake of animals who are responsibly chipped and claimed accordingly!

I guess "Doc" is ready to resume school visits. She has never given us a jab but when she pinches you know it! She is an emperor scorpion and with large pincers and thin tail which tells you her venom is weak. She will rather rip an insect apart with those strong pincers than waste venom on trying to kill it which is normally used as a last resort. We will add some photo's of her mouth parts which seems to be straight out of a horror movie and not many people have actually seen a scorpion eat. Back in time we have some photos of "Doc" molting which we may repost soon.

We rescue and release about three or four of these a year, the awesome brown house snake eating mice and rats that spread disease while being completely harmless constrictors. Even this relatively small one can already eat a small rat.

Today on the first day of April 2024 we are the proud recipients of a Vervet monkey family donated to us courtesy of the Phantasia Vervet and Small Primate Monkey sanctuary in Nooitgedacht. These amazing animals will be used in our local conservation talks as soon as the effects of the rabies and tetanus shots ware off and we have addressed the legalities of injuries to our target audience as these are wild animals not suited for captivity and have been known to be slightly aggressive with guaranteed bites and injuries.

Just received another call to urgently assist as a granny who was just contacted by the person they booked in 2 hours for a party now cancelled. Can you imagine the disappointment of the birthday boy, and friends attending with invites and themed cake etc. That just reminds me in 13 years we have never missed a properly booked function and on a party where I was double booked I arranged for another person to attend on our behalf. On a day I was feeling like death warmed up I still attended and although I felt it was not my best presentations I received lovely complements on these presentations as well. Now with Caitlin by my side we really make the best team and complement each other in every regard and instinctively fill in for each other when required.

I must also admit we were fairly lucky with traffic and were really late for one party when travelling back from Pretoria to a party in Randburg and the highway was partially closed many years ago that is why we often leave early and wait near a venue to ensure we are on time.

Lady the white ear marmoset monkey which I work with daily has been acting strange lately. Healthy, eating with no visible wounds she has become secretive and has been avoiding me while her male partner seems more aggressive towards us. We will be leaving her at home but keep a close eye on her.. Our monkey friends suspect her behavior indicates she may be pregnant. We will probably take her with during our next visit to the boskruin vet.for n a scan.

No you are not seeing double. This is Angel (23) and Merlin (5). Angel seems to be more aware of people while merlin does not mind people and walks around between people. Merlin also looks like a little butterfly showing people his clipped wings while Angel has never used his wings. Spencer the Scarlet Macaw will be joining our school visits in April.

The first Godzilla movies they used green iguanas to scare people and watching this clip and the new Godzilla movie where it swims you can again see what animal its based on. Just extend the back spines a bit. Hollywood also used the iguanas face to mold the features of the velociraptor.

The majority of marsupials can be found in Australia and surrounding islands and probably the most well-known example is the kangaroo. Marsupials are animals that carry babies in their pouches and the babies are called "Joeys". 15 - 17 Days after mating, sugar gliders normally have 2 Joeys and when born they are about the size of a grain of rice. They will say in the pouch for about 6 weeks. In this clip, you can see the tail of one of the Joeys tails.

Monkey chatter... these soft exited whistles mean I am really enjoying this. Monkeys have definate sounds to communicate emotions such as happyness, loneliness, fear, hostility etc. Listening out for these sounds you will soon know if there is a stranger or a stray cat in your yard. Today I discovered a wild dassie when the monkies went "ape?" this morning next to their cage.

Ringneck rescue Part II Sunday after the storm I found the baby ringneck in the road near my home. Took it home, ensured it was ok and fed it like I would any other bird. Monday morning I put it in a cage and when other wild ringnecks in the area called it would answer. Yesterday another ringneck landed on the cage today what I assume to be both parents came and took turns to feed it. Not quite able and ready to fly I will continue to raise it and probably leave it to go free once its able with its parents or caregivers. And there is a difficult situation. Some people feel that by releasing it we would be contributing to the problem of invasive species while some people believe they should not be caged and remain free. I've been advised that it would be irresponsible and illegal to set it free. What does the bird want and whats best for the bird? Did we let them escape and form colonies along the Jukskei River? Should I have left it to probably starve or be caught by a cat or dog which we domesticated which are actually "acceped exotic invasive" animals? Who gets to decide? We need to protect and co-exist but learn from mistakes. Knowledge is the key..and the purpose of this message is to show how amazing nature is and not to start an argument with each person voicing their own opinions on this predicament.
