Patient of the month

Callie Fraser, a 4 year old miniature schnauzer is our pet of the month for December. She has bravely been fighting lymphoma for the last 12 weeks. She is receiving chemotherapy and is responding well so far. We hope she continues to show success to the treatment and will go into full remission. Stay strong brave girl, we are all rooting for you.

Lymphoma is a malignant tumour of the lymph system. It is one of the most common cancers in small animals. The most obvious sign is enlargement of lymph nodes located in the neck,chest, armpits, behind the knees and groin area. Dogs can also develop lymphoma in the intestines or in the chest. There are different types of lymphomas that can be divided into different stages of disease. The prognosis depends on the aggressiveness of the lymphoma, the stage of lymphoma and the treatment choice. Many dogs can go into remission when receiving chemotherapy. Chemotherapy in animals is different from humans. In dogs the aim of treatment is remission and not cure in order to provide a good quality of life.

Beautiful scruffy-wirehaired mix breed was found running near Honeydew Police station and brought into us this morning. No collar or chip. This boy is still a baby and approximately 7mnths old. Does anyone recognise him ?

Goldie is a lovable 11-year-old Labrador Retriever who recently had an extensive ovarian tumor removed. Known for her sweet nature and loyalty, she’s a resilient companion and is still recovering from her surgery. As a testament to her strength and spirit, she has been named Pet of the Month at Honeydew Animal Clinic.

Heat Stroke/Hyperthermia

Given the rising temperature and current heat wave we are experiencing in Gauteng it is important to know what signs to look out for and how to manage the condition.

Heatstroke in dogs is an emergency and possibly life-threatening . Recognizing early signs of heatstroke may help you control the condition before things get too serious. It occurs during the hottest part of the year, especially when it’s humid. Brachiocephalic (short-faced) breeds are much more prone to heat stroke and it is very important to control their environment and exercise during these hotter months.

Dogs do not sweat through their skin and can’t cool themselves in the same way we do. They cool themselves by blood vessel expansion and panting. When dogs pant, they evaporate moisture from their tongues, nasal passages, and the lining of their lungs, and this cools them down as air passes over the moist tissue. They also cool off via vasodilation. Blood vessels, especially in the ears and face, expand, bringing overheated blood closer to the surface to cool down. Their paw pads can sweat but not enough to make a difference.

At home treatment involves trying to lower your dog’s temperature by the following methods
-Move your pet to a cool, well ventilated area and place a fan on them
-Wet your dog with cool running water or place in a cool bath
-Offer cool drinking water but do not force water into your pet’s mouth
-Do not cover with wet towels as this can insulate the heat, rather use running water
_Transport to the closest veterinary facility immediately with the aircon on full.
