🚨 EMERGENCY – OUR ANIMALS NEED YOUR HELP! 🚨

Here at the Randwest SPCA, we are facing a huge crisis.
Two of our vehicles have broken down, and without them we cannot attend to emergencies or reach the animals in need.

We have a reliable mechanic ready to assist, but we need a deposit of R5000 before the repairs can begin.

Every minute counts and without a vehicle, an animal’s life could be at risk.

If you are able, please help us get our vehicle back on the road so we can continue rescuing and helping animals.

Banking Details:
šŸ¦ Bank: Standard Bank
šŸ”¹ Account Number: 022070109
šŸ“Œ Account Name: SPCA Westonaria (Business Account)

Every donation makes a difference – big or small! Please also share this message to help us reach the R5000 as quickly as possible.

Thank you for standing with us and for the animals who cannot speak for themselves.

Why Keeping a Wild Animal as a Pet is NEVER a Good Idea!

These pictures may look adorable, don’t they?

Everyone loves the idea of having a cute baby animal — especially when they look as sweet and helpless as this little one. That’s exactly what the people who found him thought too. They discovered him alone, without his mother, and out of compassion, decided to take him in. They wanted to nurture him and keep him safe.

But thankfully, they soon realized that keeping a wild animal wasn’t the right decision. Instead, they contacted us for help so he could be safely released back into the wild — where he truly belongs.

They brought him to our office, and we transferred him to the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital, hoping he could be rehabilitated and released.

But then came the heartbreaking news.

As cute as this baby animal looks, he was in excruciating pain and severe distress. Upon further examination, it was found that:

He was severely malnourished

Had stunted growth and no muscle development

Was suffering from a lung infection

Worst of all — he had a fractured skull

šŸ’” Imagine how much longer he would have suffered had the people who found him decided too keep him

ā— What You Need to Know:

If you ever come across an injured or abandoned wild animal, please do not try to keep or treat it yourself. No matter how good your intentions are, any sort of medical attention should be provided by trained veterinarians.

This post is not to criticize the people who found him — they eventually did the right thing, and we thank them for that. But it’s important to use this story to raise awareness and educate others about the dangers of keeping wild animals as pets.

🚫 Why Wild Animals Should Never Be Kept as Pets:

It is often illegal to keep wild animals without permits

They can pose a risk to you and your family — wild instincts remain, no matter how tame they may seem

They have complex dietary and medical needs that most people are not equipped to handle

Keeping them in captivity leads to physical and emotional suffering

It fuels the illegal and inhumane wildlife trade

They are being taken out of their natural habitats which have massive impacts mentally and physically.

At the SPCA, we strongly oppose the keeping of wild animals — both indigenous and exotic — due to the many welfare concerns involved.

🐾 Do the Right Thing

If you come across a wild animal that appears to be injured, sick, or in distress, please contact your local SPCA or a veterinarian immediately.

Let’s protect our wildlife by keeping them where they belong — in the wild.

We had a wonderful visit from Zenande Mbatha, who came to hand over generous donations for our animals and spent some quality time with them.

It warms our hearts to see young people so deeply invested in animal welfare. Zenande's support helps us continue to provide a safe haven for animals who have been unwanted, abandoned, neglected and abused.

We hope her example will inspire more young people to follow in her footsteps, helping to create a brighter, kinder future for all animals.

Reaching the Forgotten

One of our inspector team's top priorities is to carve out time for proactive inspections in remote areas—where help is rarely seen, but desperately needed.

Due to limited resources and time, we can’t reach these areas as often as we’d like. But when we do, we strive to make a real difference in animal welfare, no matter how small it may seem. In places where poverty rules, we often find a lack of basic animal care knowledge. That’s why education is a key part of our mission.

Recently, Inspector van Straten, Cadet Inspector Molobi, and Field Officer Cuna headed out—each taking a different direction to cover all sectors of Tsipisong. What started as a typical day—dogs on chains, livestock here and there, education provided and warnings issued —took a sharp turn.

Then came the call.

Field Officer Cuna, a SPCA officer for over 27-years, called in:
ā€œI need backup. This is bad.ā€

When someone who’s seen the worst of the worst says "this is bad", you prepare yourself for the unimaginable.

What we walked into could only be described as hell for pigs.

Hundreds of pigs were found living in horrific conditions. The area was so filthy and muddy that vehicles couldn’t get through. We had to fight our way through heaps of rubbish, f***s, and rotting food just to reach them. The pigs were being fed spoiled waste, living among filth with no shelter, only stones and sludge.

It was heartbreaking.

Multiple warnings were issued immediately. Thankfully, Field Officer Cuna and Cadet Inspector Molobi returned shortly after and were relieved to report cooperation from the owners. While these problems can't be fixed overnight, it was encouraging to see the owners open to education and willing to start making changes to improve the welfare of their animals and their livelihoods.

We will continue with follow-up inspections in this area—not just for the pigs, but for every animal we encounter—until conditions improve. If not, we will take further action.

---

These outreach missions take a tremendous amount of time, effort, and resources. We do everything we can with what we have, but with your support we can do more and reach further.
