🚨 Summer Warning for Pet Owners in South Africa: Snake Bites 🚨

As temperatures rise, so does the risk of snake encounters, especially in warmer months. South Africa is home to a variety of venomous snakes, and summer can see an increase in snake activity. 🐍☀️

💡 Key things to remember:

Snakes are more active during summer, often seeking shelter in gardens, long grass, or even under patios.
Protect your pets by keeping them on leashes during walks in unfamiliar areas and regularly checking your garden for signs of snakes.
Know the signs of a snake bite: sudden lethargy, swelling, or abnormal breathing in your pet can indicate a venomous bite.
Act fast: If you suspect your pet has been bitten, seek immediate veterinary help. Time is critical!

Intoxications

Over the holiday season we are more likely to tackle jobs like exterminating pests with substances that may be harmful to our furry friends. When vacationing in a new environment, this also means exposure to new toxins like insecticides, pesticides and new toxic plants. It is a good idea to have a plan of action in mind, should your pet eat a chemical or plant that they aren't supposed to.

Gastro-intestinal Foreign Bodies

Christmas is a time when many things - sports equipment, clothes, decorations - are lying around the house. It is also a time when people think of getting a new puppy to start of the new year. The puppy is not always supervised in the chaos of the holidays and may eat something that he is not supposed to eat.

Alternatively we are eating our favourite foods over Christmas - chops, ribs, chicken roast - and these bones, when eaten can pose a massive risk for our pets.

It is up to us to protect our pets from things that may seem fun and tasty, but that can harm them or require surgery in the future.

CHRISTMAS EMERGENCIES SERIES #1

If you have a Great Dane, Saint Bernard, Weimaraner, Standard Poodle, Basset Hound, Doberman or German Shepherd, this is an important condition to note.

Especially when the dog is eating large quantities too quickly or when they are exercised directly after meal times.

Note that this is an emergency and requires immediate veterinary attention!

It's a strange thought, but when we change our pets' routine, environment and companions during the Christmas season, they are more prone to emergency situations. Any vet will be able to confirm that December and January are the busiest times with the most emergencies.

We thought to discuss a few unique emergencies that may occur for the next few weeks. For example how to know that your animal is in an emergency situation and needs immediate vet care, especially if one is vacationing in an area that is far away from your normal vet.

Today is the first day in our series: normal critical signs in animals and when they should see a vet.

Dit is 'n vreemde gedagte, maar wanneer ons ons troeteldiere se roetine, omgewing en geselskap gedurende die Kersseisoen verander, is hulle meer geneig tot noodsituasies. Enige veearts sal kan bevestig dat Desember en Januarie die besigste tye is met die meeste noodgevalle.

Ons het gedink om 'n paar unieke noodgevalle te bespreek wat vir die volgende paar weke kan voorkom. Byvoorbeeld hoe om te weet dat jou dier in 'n noodsituasie is en onmiddellike veeartssorg benodig, veral as 'n mens vakansie hou in 'n area wat ver van jou normale veearts af is.

Vandag is die eerste dag in ons reeks: normale kritieke tekens by diere en wanneer hulle 'n veearts moet sien.

Kom skryf 'n ster vir jou troeteldier in die hemel om ons boom te versier of los 'n geskenk vir die minder bevoorregte diere van die Wynland DBV.

Draai jou skenking vir die DBV toe soos 'n geskenk en los dit onder ons boom. Ons sal dan seker maak dat dit by die DBV afgelewer word wanneer hulle op 6 Januarie 2025 heropen.
