Tucked away in Ruimsig is a place that feels less like an art gallery and more like stepping into a good friend’s cozy, art-filled home. Meet Alice Pretorius, the beating heart of Alice Art Gallery … a woman who lives for art, people, and a good glass of red wine.

Alice Pretorius’ love affair with art started at 21 when she bought her very first piece. That one painting lit a spark that eventually turned her walls, and her life, into a canvas of creativity. Fast forward a few decades, and this passion project is now a thriving gallery loved by both artists and collectors.

But she didn’t exactly take the pretty, paint-splattered road from the start. She kicked off her career with a BSc in Computer Science (yes, really). From coding to door-to-door sales, then to running a framing shop (to reframe that first painting), Alice eventually reframed her life – literally and figuratively – when she opened the gallery in 1990. Her first big-name artist, Father Frans Claerhout, who not only exhibited but became a dear friend over the years.

Today, Alice Art Gallery showcases works from some of South Africa’s most celebrated artists. Think Este Mostert, Johan Smit and Cornelius Bosch (who she met by chance under a tree in Graskop) to name just a few. From there, the artists found her.

If Lizette Nieman could describe herself as any plant, it would be the Protea. Because, like this magnificent flower, she flourishes with time, care, and a touch of patience.

But don’t let that fool you … this award-winning landscape technologist is as vibrant and resilient as the gardens she creates.

Growing up on a farm, Lizette Nieman’s love of getting her hands dirty began early. The smell of soil. The feeling of playing in it. The freshly ploughed fields. Her mom’s green thumb just further sowing the seeds for what would become her life’s passion.

‘I had my own little patch in the garden that I enjoyed so much. And I remember it just continually changing. Not for any other reason than my older brother and I playing in it with replica tractors. And getting dirty was simply the norm,’ she laughs.

Fast forward a few decades and hundreds of gardens, and Lizette has turned her childhood hobby into a flourishing (see what we did there!) career. After getting her landscaping diploma, she opened Strylitzia Landscaping … a nod to her maiden name, Strydom. And because it just gelled so perfectly.

Today, nearly 30 years later, Lizette and her husband – and right hand – Riaan, along with their Strylitzia fam of 20, are still crafting some of the dreamiest gardens you’ll ever see.

Savoury waffles with whipped ricotta & smoked trout

This easy yet luxurious recipe, served with Spier Cap Classique Brut, is perfect for a breakfast or brunch treat.

Turn brunch into a celebration by pairing these waffles with Spier Cap Classique Brut. The wine’s exuberant bubbles and golden hue complement the crispy waffles, while its apple and citrus notes enhance the smoked trout. The Cap Classique’s balanced mouthfeel and good acidity cut through the richness of the whipped ricotta. Serves four.

You’ll need: For the waffle mixture- 2 XL eggs, 2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil, ½ cup sour cream, ½ cup milk, 1½ cups cake flour, 1½ tsp baking powder, ½ to ¾ cup finely chopped spring onions (plus extra for serving, optional), ½ cup finely grated hard cheese (Parmesan / Pecorino / Gruyère), salt and pepper, to taste

For topping - ½ cup sour cream, 230g ricotta cheese or smooth full cream cottage cheese, 200g cold smoked trout/salmon ribbons, a small bunch of chives, finely sliced, for serving
For the creamy mustard vinaigrette - 3 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil, 3 tsp fresh lemon juice, 3 tsp mayonnaise, 1 tsp honey, salt and pepper, to taste

To make: Prepare the waffles and whipped cheese. Whisk together the eggs, oil, sour cream, and milk in a medium mixing bowl. Add the flour and baking powder and stir until almost mixed, then add the spring onions and cheese until no floury bits remain (do not overmix). You’ll have a thick mixture. Set aside while you prepare the whipped cheese.

To prepare the whipped cheese, mix the sour cream and cheese in a small blender until smooth and creamy. Set aside.

Prepare the vinaigrette. Put all the ingredients into a medium jar with a lid, then shake until well blended. Set aside until ready to serve.

Cook the waffles and assemble. Heat a waffle maker. Spoon the mixture into the hot machine and cook until golden brown. Serve warm, topped with a dollop of prepared whipped cheese, ribbons of trout, and freshly chopped chives. Finish with a drizzle of the prepared vinaigrette, then serve at once.

Tip: Leftover waffles can be stored in the fridge for up to two days and refreshed in a toaster. If you want to serve all the waffles warm at the same time, pre-toast them in advance, then refresh them in an oven at 180°C for a few minutes.

Almond, chocolate & orange cantuccini

Cantuccini are the biscotti of Tuscany. Traditionally served with Vin Santo, they’re equally delicious dipped into a chilled dessert wine or good espresso.

When you bake these, double up. Keep a batch for yourself, and the other wrap up with a bottle of dessert wine ... a brilliant hostess gift.

You’ll need: 2 cups cake flour, 1 cup granulated sugar, 1 tsp baking powder, pinch of salt, 2 eggs, 5 pumps NOMU Vanilla Paste, grated zest of 2 oranges, 100g almonds (skin on), roasted and coarsely chopped, 60g NOMU Decadent Hot Chocolate chunks

To make: Preheat the oven to 180°C.
Sift the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in a large bowl and set aside. Mix the eggs, Vanilla Paste and zest together. Pour the egg mixture into the dry ingredients and stir gently with a wooden spoon. Add the nuts and NOMU Decadent Hot Chocolate chunks and stir to combine.

Divide the dough mix in half and roll each into a log shape, about 30cm long and 5cm wide. Place the logs onto a buttered and floured oven tray, making sure there is space between each one for spreading. Bake for 25 minutes until firm and light golden brown. Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly.

Reduce the oven temperature to 90°C. Whilst still warm, thinly slice the logs into 1cm slices and place on a greased oven tray. Bake further for approximately 4 to 5 hours, turning halfway through until completely dried out and crisp.

Cadbury Dairy Milk is on a mission … to help inspire a love of reading in children, with a library of children’s stories in their mother tongue. “A love of reading is sparked when children see themselves in stories and relate it to their lives, even more so when it is shared in their home language,” says Xolisa Guzula, an early literary specialist. However, the first book many South African children read is not the immersive experience Xolisa describes, as very few are able to enjoy storybooks in their home language. A survey by the Publishers Association SA (2016) highlighted the fact that only 2 per cent of children’s books published commercially in South Africa are in local African languages. And in a country where 80 per cent of the population speak a home language other than English or Afrikaans there are not enough relatable stories available. Cadbury Dairy Milk wants to change this and help inspire a love for reading amongst children. What better way to do this than by creating a library of enchanting children’s stories in their mother tongue. According to Langa Khanyile, Chocolate Equity Lead, Sub Saharan Africa, “Cadbury Dairy Milk has always been a brand that aims to bring people closer together, we are founded in the spirit of generosity and pioneering social impact.” Lara Sidersky, Mondelez SA Category Lead For Chocolate, adds, “That is why we want to impact the future of our children and are asking all South Africans to generously translate just one word to help co-author a library of children’s stories in African languages. We believe there’s a glass and a half of goodness in all South Africans and can’t wait to see what they share.’’ With this small act of generosity, everyone can help Cadbury Dairy Milk and Nal’ibali realise the goal of co-authoring 1500 children’s stories in African languages by 2023. By simply sharing one word as part of the In Our Own Words initiative, South Africans will be part of the change.
