The breed generally has a fearless and bold attitude. Miniature pinschers have watchdog instincts, and thanks to their history as rat hunters, they're also skilled at catching small animals.

The miniature pinscher dates back several hundred years to ratting on German farms. It was first called the reh pinscher because of its supposed similarity to the reh, a small deer that once inhabited Germany's forests.

Min pins are likely descendants of the German pinscher, as is the Doberman. They do look like a smaller version of the Dobie—with pointed ears, a long nose, and a short, shiny coat—but the min pin actually pre-dates that breed. Dachshunds and Italian greyhounds are likely ancestors of min pins.

Though min pins are often small and affectionate, they usually won't want to cuddle in your lap. Min pins are very energetic dogs who need plenty of exercise to stay healthy, so they do best in an active and attentive household.

HEAT WAVE!!
To keep pets cool during a heat wave while you're at work, make sure they have multiple bowls of fresh, cool water (add ice cubes if possible) and create a shaded resting spot with a cooling mat or damp towel.

If you can, leave a fan on or set the AC to a moderate temperature to improve airflow. Additionally, close blinds or curtains to block out the sun and prevent the indoor temperature from rising too high. These steps will help keep your pet comfortable and safe in the heat.

The poodle is an extremely smart, energetic, and friendly dog known for their signature curly coat and three size varieties: toy, miniature, and standard. Under the poodle's frilly, low-shedding coat is a powerful athlete and an overall wonderful companion. These dogs typically get along with people very well and can be trained in a variety of tasks, including work as service and therapy dogs.

Poodles tend to have a friendly and outgoing personality. High energy and intelligence also influence their temperament, and they prefer to have an active lifestyle.

Despite being associated with France, poodles trace their origin back to Germany. Going back more than 400 years, Germany had a dog that resembled today’s poodle—a retriever that was skilled in the water. In fact, the breed’s name comes from the German word for puddle.

Although the standard poodle was used for duck hunting, these dogs have also been used to find truffles, and miniature poodles were used in circuses. The breed was downsized to the toy poodle as more people, including those living in cities, wanted the poodle for companionship rather than a hunting partner.

Please note!

Its Thunderstorms and Lightning season as well as some other loud and bright dates coming up. ⛈

Thunder is the sound caused by lightning. Depending upon the distance from and nature of the lightning, it can range from a long, low rumble to a sudden, loud crack.

Near the source, the sound pressure level of thunder is usually 165 to 180 dB, but can exceed 200 dB in some cases.

The sudden increase in temperature and hence pressure caused by the lightning produces rapid expansion of the air in the path of a lightning bolt. In turn, this expansion of air creates a sonic shock wave, often referred to as a "thunderclap" or "peal of thunder".

The shock wave in thunder is sufficient to cause property damage and injury, such as internal contusion, to individuals nearby. Thunder can rupture the eardrums of people nearby, leading to permanently impaired hearing. Even if not, it can lead to temporary deafness.

The scientific study of thunder is known as Brontology and the irrational fear (phobia) of thunder is called brontophobia.

Dogs can hear frequencies up to about 65,000 Hz, while humans top out at around 20,000 Hz.

A dog's ear shape helps to funnel sound more efficiently than the flatter human ear, aiding in sound localization.

Humans have a better ability to detect subtle differences in volume, while dogs excel in hearing sounds at great distances.

Each rabbit ear can rotate separately to precisely pinpoint the direction. The rabbit hearing range is between 360 Hz and 42, 000 Hz

Cats can hear sounds made from 1000m away, while humans can only hear from around 300m.

Cats' hearing is generally four to five times better than humans.
They can hear a wider range of frequencies, from 55 Hz to 79 kHz, compared to the 20 Hz to 20 kHz range for humans.

Cats' outer ears amplify sounds and help them locate the sound's source.

This can lead to fear and anxiety in your pets as they can hear far more than we are able to.

Please come in a d chat to us about these and what we can do to help your animals feel more relaxed and calmer in these times of severe stress.

There are many ways to help them have a happy and healthy life.

Please ensure that they are kept indoors, safe and dry during these times. They will love you for it.

With a personality that’s calm, courageous, and friendly, it’s not hard to see why people fall head over heels for this breed. From English to French, it might be said that bulldogs are having a moment. Everyone from Lady Gaga and Leonardo DiCaprio to John Legend (his dog even has a Twitter account!) seems to have a bulldog as a sidekick, so there’s clearly something special about these dogs.

Bulldogs were originally bred for bull baiting. This explains the stout stature (for a low center of gravity) and underbite, which made it easier for them to grab onto what they were biting.

Snoring, drooling, farting—yep! All the endearing stuff. Bulldogs are brachycephalic (a condition caused by their short snouts), which makes them prone to gassiness and snorting.

Bulldogs don’t require a great deal of exercise, so a quick jaunt around the block during the not-so-hot part of the day and hang sessions on the couch fit the bill perfectly for this medium-energy dog.

UKC (United Kennel Club) classifies bulldogs under the companion category. Bulldogs love kids, which makes them great for families.

It is not uncommon for the breed to be delivered via c-section. The pups’ heads are too big to fit through the birthing canal.

They are one of the few breeds whose tail is naturally short and either straight or screwed, and not cut or docked like with other breeds.

Catahoula Leopard Dogs are medium to large dogs with a wide variety of eye colors, coat colors, and coat patterns. They’re known for their loyal, alert nature, but they are so much more than watchdogs.

The Catahoula Leopard Dog is the only dog that originated from Louisiana. Their name comes from the Catahoula Lake and is of Choctaw origin, which can be translated to mean “sacred lake.”

The Catahoula Leopard Dogs have worked as guard dogs, stock dogs, and bay dogs. Because of their history, they may become restless if not given adequate exercise and mental enrichment. Your Catahoula Leopard Dog was born to always be on the move, so don’t expect a lazy lap dog.

While all dogs should be sufficiently trained, it is incredibly important that the Catahoula Leopard Dog is trained thoroughly since they can be territorial at times. If not properly reined in, their independent nature can cause them to act out. Early obedience training and socialization are crucial to raising a well-behaved Catahoula Leopard Dog.

25/09/2024

All three varieties of dachshunds — the smooth-, wire- and long-coated — are found in two sizes called standard and miniature.

All three types are known for their long backs and short muscular legs, which explains the unflattering nicknames "sausage hound" or "hot dog." They also have a long muzzle, long and droopy ears, and a tail carried in line with the back.

The dachshund's coat may be shades of red, black, chocolate, white or gray. Some have tan markings or are spotted or dappled. Dachshunds live about 12 to 15 years.

Despite their size, Dachshunds are known for their courageous nature and will take on animals much larger than themselves. Some may be aggressive toward strangers and other dogs. As family dogs, Dachshunds are loyal companions and good watchdogs. They are good with children if treated well. They can be slightly difficult to train.

Some Dachshund fanciers say there are personality differences among the different varieties of the breed. For instance, the long-coat Dachshund is reportedly calmer than the smooth-coat variety, and the wire-coat Dachshund is more outgoing and clown-like.

Dachshunds were bred as hunters so it is no surprise that many of them like to dig. Some are also barkers, and, in one survey, Dachshunds ranked high for destructiveness.

Moriticia, the chincilla was at our practice today after she had an accident and broke both her left front leg lower leg bones (radius and ulna).

She presented in quite the discomfort die to the injury but she was a trooper and we quickly tended to her injury.

Dr Dyllan D. de Beer was the surgeon on the case and managed to place an intra-medullary pin in the bone, measuring a minute 1.16mm in diameter. Thats some crazy tiny surgery! But he managed to place the pin and get Morticia on track to healing up and back to her lively self.

We wish you all the best in your recovery and look forward to helping you on your journey there Morticia
