Welcome to Day 15 of our #15 Days of Enrichment!

Today we will be looking at the relaxation protocol by Dr. Karen Overall. Do you have a dog that is always on the go that doesn’t have an “off button”, a fearful dog that struggles to be calm? The Relaxation protocol is exactly what the Doctor ordered.

What is the relaxation protocol & why is it important?
• The relaxation protocol teaches dogs to relax in various environments such as coffee shops, and your local training grounds to name a few.
• The relaxation protocol consists of a 15-day worksheet, working through various exercises with your dog. (You will the link to Dr. Karen Overall relaxation protocol in the first comment.)
• Great for multi-dog households. (Remember to train each dog separately.)

Welcome to Day 14 of our #15 Days of Enrichment!

Today we will focus on enrichment with the help of a snuffle mat. Dogs are natural scavengers, and their sense of smell is the primary way they interpret the world. By allowing dogs to sniff for their food, we are tapping into their foraging instinct.

What are the benefits of using a snuffle mat?
• It provides mental stimulation, which can help to calm your dog.
• It slows down eating, which can reduce the risk of bloat.
• It promotes relaxation, as sniffing is a calming activity for dogs.

If you're interested in purchasing a snuffle mat, which makes a great Christmas gift for your furry family member, you can contact https://web.facebook.com/PawPantryOfficial. They supply all of Zuperdog Training Academy's snuffle needs.

Welcome to Day 13 of our #15 Days of Enrichment!

Today, we will focus on fun and fast💨 recalls. Building a reliable recall is a crucial skill every dog owner should train their dog. However, it is often underestimated by most owners. If your dog does not return when you give the current recall cue, it may be time to change it as your current cue may be "poisoned". The best cues are specific words or a whistle. Let's start working on building a strong recall with our furry friends! 🐕🐩

When you teach your dog a new recall cue, they must understand two things:
• The recall cue means they will receive the best reward available.
• The recall cue means they get to return to whatever they were doing before you called them, provided that it's safe.

Here are a few games you can play to make your recalls more fun:
• If your dog tends to run off and not return, keep them on a long line attached to their harness. This will prevent them from rehearsing the behavior of running off.
• Have two different types of treats available - one of lower value and one of higher value.
• Throw a less valuable treat away from you and wait for your dog to eat it. Then, run in the opposite direction. Repeat this a few times, and every other time, call your dog and reward them with the high-value treat from your hand. Once your dog is enjoying the game and running back to you as soon as the treat is eaten, you can move on to the next step.
• Still using the two different value treats, throw a treat and wait for your dog to eat it. Then, run in the opposite direction and circle with your dog. Once the circle is completed, throw a treat and run away again.
• If your dog is toy-driven, throw a treat, recall them, and then play a game of tug.
• Ask a family member to restrain your dog and walk away animatedly. Turn and recall your dog, but don't wait for them to sit. This is not an obedience session, it's just for fun.
• Remember, never scold your dog for returning to you.

If you need any information or assistance, please contact us at [email protected]. Also, keep an eye on our page as we will host some recall workshops next year.

Welcome to Day 12 of our #15 Days of Enrichment!

Today, we will focus on strengthening your relationship with your dog and mentally enriching their day by teaching them how to bow.

Did you know that the bow trick can help improve your dog's rear-end awareness and serve as a stretching exercise? It's a great way to stretch your dog's hamstrings and back, and it's also a really cute trick to show off!

Here's how to teach your dog to bow:
• First, make sure your dog is familiar with the stand position. Prepare some delicious treats to reward your dog.
• From the stand position, lure your dog to put their elbows on the floor, and mark and reward them while they're in the bow position.
• You need to reward rapidly, as most dogs will lie down, and we don't want them to get confused between the down and bow positions.
• Repeat the process above until your dog can hold the bow position for a few seconds, and then add your cue for the bow.
• Once your dog is successful 8 out of 10 times, you can start asking them to hold the bow position longer.

Welcome to Day 11 of our #15 Days of Enrichment!

Today we will focus on enrichment, problem-solving, and building confidence with the help of an egg carton!

By feeding your dog’s meal in an egg carton you are:
• Developing their problem-solving skills and creativity.
• It slows down fast eaters and encourages a fussy eater.
• It builds their confidence.
• It is mentally stimulating and burns energy, which is great for rainy days.

Please note that this enrichment activity may require cleaning up, as some dogs like shredding the egg cartons.

Welcome to Day 10 of our #15 Days of Enrichment! So far, we have focused on body awareness, coordination, and physical and mental enrichment. Today, we will prioritize stretching!

Did you know stretching can improve your dog's mobility and quality of life?
By stretching and strengthening, you can help your furry friend with pain relief. However, it's important to remember that you should never force a stretch as it can harm your dog. Always remember to stretch your dog after exercise to keep them healthy and happy.

Here's a guide on how to stretch your dog using cookie stretches:
• Stretch your dog's nose towards their butt and hold it for 30 seconds.
• Stretch your dog's nose towards their back foot and hold it for 30 seconds.
• Stretch your dog's nose towards their tail and hold it for 30 seconds.
• Stretch your dog's nose towards their chest and hold it for 30 seconds.
• Lastly, stretch your dog's nose forward and hold it for 30 seconds.

By the way, it's a good thing we baked some cookies yesterday. 😊
