96% of acute poisonings in pets are caused by ingestion of various items and products found in and around the home. In 2022, APCC saw a nearly 5% increase in case volume. Here are the most common categories called in for pet toxin exposure, starting with the most frequent.
1. Over the counter (OTC) medications – pain medications
2. Food – protein bars, xylitol gums, grapes/raisins
3. Human prescription medications
4. Chocolate
5. Plants
6. Household toxins – disinfecting wipes
7. Veterinary products
8. Rodenticides – these cause bleeding, seizures or kidney failure depending on the type
9. Insecticides
10. Recreational drugs- keep all edible THC products out of reach of pets

As we were driving away from CLAW tonight, some guys passing by, told us they had seen dogs in the bushes…
We immediately drove over to the area they had pointed to, Xolani and Nkosinathi jumped out the van and started walking through the long and wet grass.
Those guys were right, we found dogs….actually, young little puppies that had been dumped 😡
We took the pups to CLAW and got them settled in a cage with some warm blankets and food.
As we drove away for the second time, something niggled us and we decided to go back to the area to double check, and guess what, we found another puppy 🙈
The pups were dry, which indicates that they had only just been dumped shortly before we found them. Left to fend for themselves, exposed to the element’s.
What astounds us, is that they could’ve surrendered the pups to CLAW, why dump them?
Just dreadful !!
