r.Carrington warns of the dangers of Christmas puddings. These puddings and cakes contain dried fruits such as raisins, currants, sultanas and grapes which are poisonous to dogs and cats.
These are known to cause acute kidney injury, which can later lead to kidney failure.

Symptoms begin to show 6-12 hours after ingestion, with kidney failure developing within 24-72 hours.

Signs of poisoning:
• Vomiting
• Diarrhoea
• Abnormal drinking or urination
• Drooling
• Rapid breathing
• Lack of appetite
• Weakness/wobbling
• lethargy
• blood present in vomit/faeces/urine
• Fatal kidney disease

If you are concerned, contact your Vet for advice. Keep the packaging to show the vet.
Do not try give your dog salt water or induce Vomiting.

Prevention:
• Be aware of products containing raisins, currants, sultanas or grapes.
• Keep in a high cupboard.
• Keep out of paws reach at all times.
• Do not leave children alone with pets if eating these foods.
• Put shopping away as soon as you get home.
• Do not put out on tables for decoration.

Non-spayed female dogs typically go into "heat" or estrus twice a year, starting around 6 - 12 months of age. Smaller breeds may begin as early as 5 months, while larger breeds may start around 14 months.

Each cycle lasts an average of 12 - 21 days, but can range from a few days to four weeks. Bleeding occurs before the female is receptive to males, who will be attracted during the proestrus stage.

Dogs can get pregnant during their first heat cycle, but it is not advisable due to the increased risk of complications. For pet dogs, spaying before the first heat is recommended to prevent accidental pregnancies and reduce the risk of reproductive diseases.
