A bit of a gruesome video but an excellent education opportunity. Yesterday, Dr Corné tended to a puppy who came in for routine vaccinations. He noticed that one of the puppy’s paw’s seemed sensitive. When he turned the doggy over he saw boil-like lesions. He had encountered this many times during his years at Onderstepoort and knew that this was most probably Mango Fly Worms. He ended up removing 28 Maggots. When we asked where the puppy came from, the owner answered Pretoria. The Mango Fly has been endemic to Africa for more than 135 years but has made an appearance in areas where it hasn’t been seen before. The best way to avoid these critters is to wash your pet’s bed regularly (tumble dry on high heat if possible, to bathe your dog regularly, clean up faeces as quickly as possible and to invest in fly repellents.

Two weeks ago one of our wonderful clients picked up a Goat next to the road that had been hit by a car. Dr Louis Bosch tended to her injuries. Yesterday morning this lovely Doe was struggling to give birth. Dr Corné Viljoen performed a cesarean section on her. This is the sweet Kid’s first cry.
