This evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, a panicked call from a man named Moses set the wheels of a daring rescue mission in motion. His beloved dog, Whitie, had slipped and fallen down an air pipe at a nearby mine—a pipe that plunged a terrifying 15 meters into the earth. Whitie was trapped, scared, and utterly alone.
Without hesitation, Inspector Le Roux, Field Officer Foreman, and two unexpected (but very willing) team members, her son and daughter, sprang into action. We fetched Moses and hurried to the site, ropes and every piece of gear we could think of packed in our vehicle. Little did we know that the road ahead wasn’t just metaphorical; it was literal, a rugged, thigh-burning hike up the mountain to the pipe.
The moment we arrived, reality struck: this wasn’t a job we could handle alone. The air pipe was narrow, deep, and treacherous. We needed experts.
Cue the first SOS: Nicky, our indomitable Chairlady. She immediately reached out to AfriForum Springs for assistance. Meanwhile, I called Tamaryn from Brakpan SPCA, whose quick thinking and solid network brought search and rescue specialists with gear that looked more suited to scaling Mount Everest than rescuing a dog.
When the experts arrived,, ropes, harnesses, and helmets were laid out like a tactical operation. Robert volunteered to go down under the expert eye and hand of Martin and SAPS who ensured his safety. Watching him disappear into that narrow, dark abyss was both heart-stopping and awe-inspiring.
Whitie, to her credit, was the hero we didn’t know we needed. The moment Robert reached her, she wagged her tail, seemingly relieved to see another

Christmas time... a time when most of us are with our families and enjoying a break. Not us...
On Christmas Eve, a call came through the SPCA’s emergency line from a good Samaritan in Kwa-Thema informal settlement. For three days, he had noticed a dog lying on the side of the road, barely moving, yet still alive. With time running out for the poor soul, Inspector le Roux and Field Officer Foreman rushed out to find the dog.
Arriving at the location, they couldn’t immediately locate the dog. As they drove through the area, a man approached, asking if they were searching for a dog. He guided them to a patch of long grass where the dog lay.
There he was—motionless but alive. As they approached carefully, the dog lifted his head, his eyes full of pain and desperation, silently pleading for help. Paralyzed and unable to move, the only thing he could do was gently pull his paw away when Inspector le Roux reached out with a comforting touch.
Field Officer Foreman tenderly lifted the dog and carried him to the SPCA vehicle. Back at the SPCA, their veterinarian confirmed what they had feared—his condition was beyond recovery, and the kindest thing they could do was to end his suffering humanely.
Before saying goodbye, they made sure his final moments were filled with love and dignity. They offered him a final meal and a bowl of fresh water, which he eagerly lapped up. Sitting beside him on the grass, they stroked his frail body and spoke soothing words, ensuring he felt safe and loved. Wrapped in warmth and compassion, he was gently helped over the rainbow bridge.
While the world celebrates the festive season with joy and their families, the SPCA team was hard at work, responding to the unrelenting calls for help that pour in over the festive season.
For those who dedicate their lives to animal welfare, this time of year often brings the heaviest burdens and the hardest goodbyes.
In moments like these, the SPCA reminds us of the profound importan
