At The Giraffe House Wildlife Awareness centre we provide easy access to some of Africa's wonderful wildlife and bird species. We are open to general public.

Focusing on African wildlife, Giraffe House aims to provide a place for people to enjoy the outdoors, whilst experiencing and learning about animals and why they are special. An important member of our team is Gerry, our hand reared giraffe. Did you know that giraffes can reach almost 6 m and are therefore the tallest land mammals on earth? Gerry is joined by some other animal friends that have be

en selected to form part of our wildlife educational programs. Education is our primary focus, and we cater from preschool and school groups to older groups. The wildlife education is presented in an informative wildlife conservation program suited for the individual group. Our interactive creepy crawly encounters are held at 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00 on weekends and during school holidays. It gives the visitor the opportunity to meet and hold some interesting creatures. Recreation and relaxation are important in today's busy world and Giraffe House offers the family an opportunity to spend affordable quality time together outdoors. Jungle gyms are available. There is no restaurant on the premises, but a refreshment kiosk supplies snacks and something to drink. Visitors are welcome to bring a picnic basket. Please just take note of our no-alcohol policy. Giraffe House is also a fun kiddies’ party venue.

We, The Giraffe House Team, would just like to say thank you to each and every visitor who has supported us this year.🦒🤗

Because of your visits (gate entry fees) we were able to restore all the walkway roofs that was damaged by the storm a few months ago and added new roofing structures in with our Giraffe ambassadors - and many others got refurbished. We spent a total of R183 214 in the last 4 months (September-December) and got it done!🦒👏🏽
...you guys did this! We are so grateful and we know the Giraffe are loving their new shade towers.🦒🥳🎊

The neck is a remarkable feature on a giraffe. It is still a mind-boggling characteristic a giraffe.🦒

A giraffes neck can measure over 1.5 metres in length, however, it contains only seven vertebrae - the same number as us humans...difference is that each bone is almost as long as a ruler😮

Guess who had a visit from the tooth fairy....our Pretzel boy is loosing his baby teeth!!! His big boy teeth are coming in....and look so cute!🦒🥨🦷🧚‍♀️

Did you know an adult Giraffe has 32 teeth just like us. By the age of six a giraffe will have most-if not all of its 32 adult teeth!!!

So just like us they have the same amount of neck bones (7) and teeth (32) too! So cool!🦷🦒😄

The tooth fairy brought him lots of his favourite grapes...🍇🧚‍♀️🦒

Sometimes we really don't understand how peoples expectations somehow defeats logic. We just received an email from a "unsatisfied customer". Who decided to visit an outdoor facility today and was unhappy because the animals were using their shelters to avoid the heavy rain.

Apart from the heavy rain which is clearly happening, the clients were told that its not the best time to visit, terrains are wet....and its raining!?. Surely, to expect the animals to stand in the pouring rain because you insist on visiting even when you are warned against it is extremely unfair! Also, if the animals were out in the rain I am sure they would then complain about that too!

They insisted on entering, we provided shoe covers, they walked around the park in the pouring rain....and now want a refund because their expectations were not met.

And we do not offer daily general public feeding of Giraffe....this is posted on our website, socials, walk in boards and communicated at the reception- before entry.

To avoid dissatisfaction rather call or email when the weather is bad...

Rant over...!

On another note Our animal Ambassadors are all dry and out of the elements. 🦒💪🌧☔🌬

Last year we received the "Most Dedicated Wildlife Conservation Organisation 2023 – Western Cape" award.

This year we received the "Best in Conservation Education 2024 – Cape Town" award.

We are absolutely blown away by this! We could not have done this without the support of our visitors. Thank you for continuous support!!!

Today the Vet stopped in for our routine bird health checks, beak and nail trims🐤🦉🦆🐦🕊🦅🦜 Overall health and body scores were excellent....💯✔️ Only Georgie ended up in the "cone of shame" due to him biting a few of his new budding feather follicles...itchy bits. Our Story

WHY GIRAFFE HOUSE?

The park opened in April 2007, to be an educational portal for our local schools and visitors who would never have the chance to see or experience these animals in the wild. We realised that we have a significant role to play in protecting wildlife for the future generations. Our aim is to develop the next generation of African conservationists through our African Education programmes by instilling an appreciation of all wildlife to people from all walks of life. We chose the Giraffe as our iconic species. The Giraffe is the tallest land mammal in the World and is one of the most characteristic animals of Africa. The wild African giraffe population is declining - in the 1980s, the total number of all giraffe in Africa was estimated at more than 155,000 individuals. Today, the current Africa-wide giraffe population is estimated at approximately less than 111,000 individuals. We currently have 4 giraffe at our facility and a variety of African animals who are ambassadors for their wild counterparts, who help by educating people of their plight in the wild and their importance to our African ecosystem.

An important member of our team is our Gerry.She joined the Giraffe House team back in 2008 all the way from the Eastern Cape. She was born during a game capture operation. The Ranger in charge took the newborn calf to his home where he hand raised her until his backyard became way to small to keep a giraffe. She was brought to Giraffe House, our very own famous local giraffe star, and the Matriarch of our herd.

Our Interactive Animal Encounters are scheduled at 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00 over weekends and during the school holidays. It gives visitors the opportunity to meet and experience some of our amazing animals.
