It’s never easy saying good bye. These boys will be missed at the facility. Maximus finished his training with flying colors. He is now being leased to a young lady and it was love at first sight. She had a bad experience before and unsure about what Maximus was like or if he would be the right horse for her. They instantly bonded. Rick spent a few hours with them both to be sure it was a good fit and it was. Max is cut out for this job and will excel with flying colors.

Before the rains came, the dams and water sources were dry. So we came into the felt with the Jeep to move these wild horses to a different area in the mountains where they would have access to water. We needed to use the Jeep because one of our working horses was out of action and the other was missing in action (in this area with these horses). This is a part of life living in the mountains of South Africa, where it’s wild and free.

The secret to schooling a horse successfully is to get to a place where the horse understands the riders commands. A rider’s hands control the the front part of his body. And the feet control the hind side of his body. Its always gotta be a dance.

Maximus is getting basic schooling now at our facility. The horses all start bit-less and then put onto a bit just when the basic schooling starts, the last and final stage.

Here is a great story about Endo, the blind Appaloosa. His condition is the same as Casper. Despite being blind, they are amazing horses, thrive in their environments and overcome so many challenges. Moral to the story is, don’t give up on them. They don’t give up on themselves.

It’s time to introduce new riders to the horses before they are delivered next week. It’s been Rick working and riding them up until now. We’ve handed them over to our work riders so the horses get used to other riders to complete the training.

Casper is a very special horse and like we mentioned before, he is Rick’s wingman. His father was Appaloosa and his mother was a Perch Quarter-horse cross. Casper has Moon Blindness which is hereditary for Appaloosas. Some are even born with it. Casper has only 10% sight in one eye and blind in the other. Despite this, he is a natural leader. He loves the natural surroundings at the facility and performs well. With Rick, he leads beautifully. And they continue to learn from one another everyday. Most would have given up on him because of his blindness. He is strong, he is a leader and he thrives.

Today, we introduced Casper and Silver in the pen. Casper will be the lead when Silver does box training and more. The introduction is very important because Casper is blind so everything about the elements around him have to be considered when the introductions are made. Today it was very windy and his sense of smell was affected by the wind. It makes his sense of surroundings harder to grasp and you will see his reaction in the video. But once it’s done and he starts working, he leads. He is a very special horse and will lead all the others through training at the facility as well. He is Rick’s wingman.

Today during a roundup we were organizing, we had a feral stallion break into the camp causing trouble with the other horses. We don’t normally use ropes to capture but this was safer than putting the horses in a crush. We are available to help our farmers if there is ever an issue in the safest, best way possible. Now the others are safe and ready for the vet visit tomorrow.
