Did you know that temperatures above 25 degrees Celsius are too hot for rabbits and can increase the risk of heatstroke? While many animals are able to regulate their own body temperature, rabbits need extra help to stay cool, especially breeds with very thick fur and domestic rabbits who do not have the option to burrow. Here are some bunny-beat-the-heat tips to keep your furry friend happy, healthy and hoppy during the hottest months.
➡️ Provide plenty of shade: make sure your rabbit's hutch or run has plenty of shade throughout the day. Trees, awnings, or even a big umbrella can make a world of difference.
➡️ Have lots of fresh and cool water available 24/7. Fill multiple bowls and bottles, and top them up regularly. You can even add ice cubes for an extra chill, or offer juicy fruits and veggies (like watermelon and cucumbers!) to keep them hydrated from the inside out.
➡️ Use ice packs or frozen water bottles placed inside a towel to create a cool surface for your rabbit to relax on.
➡️ Hang a damp towel on the rabbit run to provide extra shade, while also creating an evaporative cooling effect.
➡️ Dampen your rabbit’s ears. Since rabbits lose heat through their ears, you can lightly moisten them to speed up the cooling process.
➡️ Groom them regularly to remove excess fur.
➡️ Place a ceramic or slate tile in the shade for the perfect nap spots.

Remember, rabbits are most active in the mornings and evenings when it's cooler. Avoid handling them during the hottest part of the day, and keep an eye out for signs of heatstroke, like excessive panting, lethargy, or glazed eyes. If you suspect your rabbit is suffering from heatstroke,seek immediate veterinary advice
