Understanding Arthritis and Spondylitis Deformans in Dogs

Meet Cody, our Animal Health Technician Rene’s beloved husky. Recently, Rene noticed that Cody was persistently licking her elbows, which led to discolouration of her fur. A visit to our clinic revealed the underlying cause: arthritis and spondylitis deformans.

What Is Spondylitis Deformans?

Spondylitis deformans is a degenerative condition affecting the spine. In Cody’s case, it includes spondylosis in the neck, which may be pressing on nearby nerves. This can cause pain radiating down her forelegs and may even create a pins-and-needles sensation. Dogs often respond to this discomfort by licking, as a form of self-soothing.

Cody’s Treatment Plan

To help relieve Cody’s discomfort, our vets prescribed:

- Pain medication for daily management

- Weekly pentosan injections for a month, then as needed.

With the right treatment and lots of love, dogs like Cody can enjoy her best quality of life. If you notice unusual licking, fur discolouration, or signs of discomfort in your dog, a vet visit could make all the difference. Arthritis and spinal conditions are more manageable when treated early!

Understanding Malassezia and Your Pet’s Skin Health

Did you know? Malassezia is a yeast that naturally lives on your pet’s skin and in their outer ear canals. Usually, it’s harmless, but certain conditions can cause it to overgrow, leading to discomfort and even infection.

📍What Triggers Malassezia Overgrowth? Humidity (especially in ears, between toes, or in skin folds), bacterial dermatitis, food allergies, mites, and seasonal skin allergies are common culprits. These can lead to symptoms like red, inflamed ears and itchy skin.

🔬 How is it Diagnosed? Your vet can identify malassezia in-house through simple methods like ear swabs, sellotape preps, or skin scrapes to spot the yeast under a microscope.

💊 Treatment Options Antifungal ear drops or medicated shampoos can help tackle the yeast infection. For more widespread infections, systemic antifungals may be recommended.

Remember, early detection and treatment are key to keeping your pet comfortable and itch-free. If you notice signs of an ear infection or itchy skin, give us a call – we’re here to help!

Did you know about cryptorchidism in dogs?

Cryptorchidism is a condition where one or both testicles fail to descend into the sc***um. Normally, a puppy’s testicles develop near the kidneys in the abdomen and then descend by around two months of age. However, in some cases, this descent can be delayed or may not happen at all, with rare instances of it occurring after six months.

This condition can lead to serious health concerns for our furry friends. Undescended testicles are at a higher risk of developing testicular cancer and can also cause hormone-related issues and behavioural problems. Furthermore, cryptorchidism is hereditary, meaning it can be passed on to future generations, so affected dogs should not be bred.

If you suspect your dog might have undescended testicles, it’s essential to consult your vet. Early diagnosis and proper management are key to ensuring your pet’s long-term health and happiness.

Remember: regular veterinary check-ups play a vital role in detecting and managing conditions like cryptorchidism. Let’s keep our pets healthy and thriving!

Fireworks may light up our skies on 5 November, but for our pets, it can be a night of confusion and fear. They rely on us to bring them home if they get lost – and microchipping is the best way to make that happen.

This Guy Fawkes, take these steps to protect your furry friends:

🐾 Locate your pet’s microchip number
🐾 Check and update your details with the provider (or visit your vet if you’re unsure!)
🐾 Prepare a safe, calm space for the evening

We owe it to them to keep them safe and close. A microchip can be the difference between a lost pet and a happy reunion. Let’s make this a night of peace and protection for them. Every step we take is one closer to keeping them safe.

The risk of encountering a snake while walking with your dogs is very real, so always stay vigilant.

On Wednesday, one of our clients shared a close encounter they had with a Cape cobra while out walking their dogs. Thankfully, their dogs were well-trained and responded immediately to their guardians’ command to “leave it,” allowing the snake to move along peacefully. We're pleased to report that everyone involved came away unscathed, and the dogs happily enjoyed the rest of their walk.

Be prepared for the unexpected: check out the tips below on what to do if your dog is ever bitten by a snake.

What is Entropion in Dogs?

Dogs are naturally curious, using their eyes to explore the world around them. But what happens when something as essential as their eyelids causes discomfort?

Entropion is a condition where a dog's eyelid rolls inward, making their eyelashes and hair rub against the sensitive cornea (the clear surface of the eye). This leads to irritation, and if left untreated, can cause more serious problems like corneal ulcers.

Who’s at Risk?

Short-nosed breeds (e.g., boxers, bulldogs, pugs) – Their facial structure causes extra tension around the inner eye.

Giant breeds (e.g., Saint Bernards, Great Danes, Bullmastiffs) – They have extra slack in the ligaments around their eyes, leading to rolling eyelids.

Sporting breeds (e.g., golden retrievers, Irish setters, Labradors) – Entropion affects them in a similar way to giant breeds.

Shar peis and Cavalier King Charles spaniels – Selective breeding for facial skin folds or prominent eyes makes these breeds more prone to the condition.

Entropion can be genetic or develop later in life. If your dog is showing signs of eye discomfort, such as excessive blinking, squinting, or eye discharge, it’s important to have them checked by a vet as soon as possible.

If you think your pet might have entropion, give us a call to schedule a consultation with our team at EberVet Pet Clinic. Protect your dog’s vision and help them see the world clearly again!

Noah stole the show at his annual check-up, happily showing off his tricks in exchange for a treat! While it was all fun and games, his visit was an important reminder of how crucial vaccinations are for keeping our pets healthy.

When puppies and kittens are born, they get some temporary immunity from their mother's milk, but this protection fades. Regular vaccinations are the best way to protect your furry friends from serious diseases. So, let's keep them safe and ensure they're up to date on their vaccines!

Zara’s journey to recovery has been a long one. After being sent from pillar to post with no real answers, she was finally referred to EberVet Pet Clinic. X-rays revealed that despite having a splint when she arrived, her leg showed no signs of healing. That's when Dr Bennie decided that an external fixation was the best solution, a procedure to align and stabilise Zara's leg to give it the best chance of healing properly. The surgery was performed last Friday, and thanks to Dr Bennie's care, Zara is already back on her feet, enjoying her daily walks.

While external fixation is less costly than plates and other implants, it’s still a significant expense. Zara's family, unfortunately, doesn’t have the means to cover the full cost of her procedure. We at EberVet Pet Clinic have done our best to keep expenses as low as possible, but there is still an outstanding balance.

This is where we need your help. By donating to our SOS Fund, not only will you help cover Zara’s bill, but you’ll also be making a difference in the lives of many other animals in need, just like Zara.

If you can, please consider donating to:

At EberVet Pet Clinic, we use a pulse oximeter to help ensure your pet’s safety while they are under anaesthetic. This device is essential for closely monitoring the oxygen levels in their blood. It works by gently passing light through your pet’s tissues to measure how much oxygen is being carried by their red blood cells. Oxygenated blood absorbs certain types of light differently than deoxygenated blood, and by calculating this, we can get an accurate percentage of your pet's oxygen saturation. This helps us make sure their body is getting enough oxygen during surgery, allowing us to respond quickly if anything changes.

Your pet's wellbeing is always our top priority, and our team uses every tool available to keep them safe and healthy throughout the procedure.

Is your cat protected?

At EberVet Pet Clinic, we prioritise the health and well-being of your furry friends. We offer simple and quick blood tests (snap tests) to screen for Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). These viruses can weaken a cat's immune system and lead to serious health issues.

Today, we’re thrilled to share that the test shown in the picture is negative! That means this kitty is free from FeLV and FIV.

💡 Quick Facts:

Cats who test positive for FIV and those who test negative can live together without transmission if the cats do not fight.

Cats with FeLV should live with other FeLV-positive cats or cats vaccinated against FeLV (however, please note that the FeLV vaccine is not 100% effective).

FeLV-positive cats are at high risk of developing cancers.

Some cats who contract FeLV can fight off the virus and develop future immunity, known as an abortive infection.

Early detection is key to keeping your feline companions healthy. If your cat hasn’t been tested yet, book an appointment with us today and ensure their health is in safe hands.
