Protecting Pets from Sun Damage: Eyelid Tattooing at EberVet Pet Clinic

At EberVet Pet Clinic, we’re committed to finding innovative ways to improve pet health. One of our newest offerings is eyelid tattooing, an exciting and proactive procedure designed to help protect pets with pale skin from sun damage and the risk of skin cancer.

Why Tattoo a Pet’s Eyelids?

Many pets, especially those with pale or pink skin, lack the melanin pigment that naturally protects against harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. This puts them at risk for solar blepharitis (sunburn and inflammation of the eyelids) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), a form of skin cancer. Breeds like Jack Russell Terriers, Bull Terriers, Maltese, and even white cats, as well as horses like the Appaloosa, are particularly vulnerable.

Melanin acts as a shield, absorbing UV rays and reducing skin damage. Without it, UV exposure causes DNA damage, leading to mutations and eventually cancer. For years, sunscreen has been a recommendation, but it’s not always practical for areas like the eyelids.

Recent studies suggest that tattooing with black pigment may reduce the risk of sun damage and cancer by absorbing UV light and shielding the sensitive skin beneath. Inspired by this research, EberVet Pet Clinic is now offering this groundbreaking service in partnership with professional tattoo artist David Staude from Davido INK.

Meet Mr Gibbles: A Success Story

One of our first patients to undergo this procedure was Mr Gibbles, our beloved clinic cat. With his pale skin, Mr Gibbles was at high risk for sun damage. A few months ago, we tattooed his eyelids as a preventative measure against cancer. Since the procedure, he’s shown incredible improvement—less eye discharge, reduced squinting in bright light, and a happier, healthier demeanour.

The Procedure

The tattooing is performed under anaesthesia to ensure the pet’s comfort and safety. Using a modern electronic tattoo gun and high-quality black pigments, the ink is carefully deposited into the dermis of the skin around the eyelids.

We recommend combining this procedure with a planned sterilisation or castration to minimise the need for multiple anaesthetic events.

Post-Operative Care

After the tattooing, pets receive:

Pain relief and anti-inflammatory medication to reduce discomfort.

Effivet spray, an antiseptic solution, to prevent infection.

A protective cone to stop scratching.

The tattooed area may appear red or slightly swollen, and a crust may form as it heals. Pets should avoid swimming or bathing during recovery, which typically lasts 10–14 days.

Prevention Is Better Than Cure

For pets without melanin pigment, prevention starts early. Pre-cancerous cells can develop when animals are young, and prolonged sun exposure accelerates the risk of SCC. Tattooing helps create a long-term protective barrier that reduces this risk.

While sunscreen remains a useful tool, tattooing provides a more permanent solution for high-risk pets.

Why Choose EberVet Pet Clinic?

At EberVet Pet Clinic, we prioritise safety and quality. Only the best pigments and equipment are used, and we carefully monitor each patient for sensitivities. We’re dedicated to staying updated on the latest research and adapting our methods to provide the best care.

If your pet is pale-skinned or at risk for sun-related conditions, consider eyelid tattooing as a proactive measure to protect their health. Like Mr Gibbles, your furry friend could benefit from this innovative procedure, ensuring a happier, healthier life.

Planning a Holiday with Your Pets? Here’s What You Need to Know!

Whether your furry friends are joining you on your adventure or staying in a kennel while you're away, here are some essential tips to ensure their safety and happiness this holiday season:

1️⃣ Name Tag: Ensure your pet wears a collar with a name tag displaying your contact number.
2️⃣ Microchip: Double-check your pet’s microchip details are up to date and registered correctly.
3️⃣ Vaccinations: Keep all vaccinations current, especially the kennel cough vaccine if they’ll be staying in a kennel.
4️⃣ Food Supply: Pack enough of your pet’s usual food to last the trip or their kennel stay—sudden dietary changes can cause tummy troubles!
5️⃣ Comfort Items: Bring familiar items like bedding, toys, and their food/water bowls to help them feel at home.
6️⃣ Kennel Checks: If using a kennel, book early, visit the facility, and provide detailed care instructions to the staff.
7️⃣ Travel Comfort: Use a well-ventilated crate or carrier and ensure it’s the right size for your pet.
8️⃣ Beach Safety: Keep your dog on a leash when visiting the beach for their safety and the safety of others.
9️⃣ Vet Details: Locate the nearest vet at your destination in case of an emergency.
🔟 Car Safety: Use a harness with a seat belt clip to keep your dog secure during long car rides.
1️⃣1️⃣ Medications: Pack anti-nausea and anti-anxiety medications—new environments can sometimes make pets uneasy.
1️⃣2️⃣ First Aid Kit: Don’t forget a pet first aid kit. It’s always better to be prepared!

Your pets deserve a safe and stress-free holiday, whether they’re with you or in trusted care. With these tips, you can relax knowing they’re well looked after.

Colonic Torsion in Dogs: What You Need to Know

Colonic torsion is a rare but life-threatening condition in dogs. It occurs when the colon twists around its mesenteric attachment, cutting off blood flow. Early detection and treatment are crucial to saving your pet’s life.

Common Symptoms to Watch For:

Vomiting

Lethargy

Abdominal pain

Hypovolemic shock

Diarrhoea

Tenesmus (straining to defecate)

Anorexia

If you notice any of these signs, especially in medium- to large-breed dogs like German Shepherds, Great Danes, Labrador Retrievers, or Bullmastiffs, seek veterinary help immediately.

How Is It Diagnosed?
Veterinarians use advanced imaging techniques such as radiographs, CT scans, or ultrasounds. These can reveal tell-tale signs like segmental distension, displacement of the colon, or the distinctive “whirl sign.”

What About Treatment?
This is a medical emergency! Immediate surgery is needed to untwist the colon and restore blood flow.

Prognosis:
With early detection and prompt surgical intervention, your dog’s chances of recovery are good.

Your pet’s health is our priority. If you suspect colonic torsion or any serious issue, don’t wait—contact us immediately.

Constipated Cat Chronicles: Jinx and the Droëwors Disaster

Droëwors: delicious for humans, not so great for our feline friends. Poor Jinx learned this the hard way after sneaking a packet of the tasty treat. What followed wasn’t so tasty—a serious case of constipation that left him feeling less than purr-fect.

Dr Esmare stepped in to save the day (and Jinx’s behind) with a lubricated e***a to remove the blockage. We kept Jinx overnight for observation to ensure the coast was clear and that he passed anything else lingering in his tummy.

Lesson of the day? As tempting as those meaty snacks may be, keep droëwors (and other rich treats) out of paw’s reach. It’s safer for your pets and your vet bills.

P.S. Jinx’s derrière is doing just fine now—though he’s avoiding the droëwors aisle from now on.

Cat Chin Acne: What You Need to Know

Have you ever noticed red bumps, black dots, or dirt on your cat’s chin? Your furry friend might be struggling with cat acne!

Cat acne occurs when hair follicles, usually on the chin, overproduce keratin and become blocked. This can result in:

• Blackheads & Red Bumps

• Infected Lesions or Swollen Crusts

• Chronic Hair Loss

If left untreated, severe cases can cause pain and ruptured follicles. Cats of all breeds, ages, and genders can develop acne—so it’s important to keep an eye out!

Garfield recently came in with feline acne. Dr Esmaré vd Walt treated him with a cortisone and antibiotic injection and advised his owner to switch to ceramic or stainless steel bowls to prevent future flare-ups.

💡 Tip: Plastic bowls can trap bacteria and worsen skin conditions. Switching to non-porous materials helps keep your cat’s chin clean and healthy!

If you’re concerned about your cat’s chin, book a check-up with us today!

Understanding Ear Hematomas in Dogs

An ear hematoma, also known as an auricular or aural hematoma, is a painful condition that affects the ear flap of dogs. It happens when a pocket of blood forms within the ear flap, causing it to swell. This usually affects just one ear, but in some cases, both ears can be impacted, with swelling occurring across part or all of the ear flap.

What Causes Ear Hematomas?
Ear hematomas can develop when blood vessels in the ear are damaged. This often results from excessive head shaking or scratching due to ear infections, allergies, or skin conditions. The constant movement can rupture blood vessels within the ear, leading to fluid buildup and swelling.

Symptoms to Watch For
Look out for signs such as swelling in the ear flap, redness, discomfort, and a noticeable difference in ear size. If your dog seems uncomfortable or keeps scratching at its ear, it might be time to get it checked.

Treatment Options
If you suspect an ear hematoma, it's essential to seek veterinary attention. Treatment typically involves draining the blood and addressing the underlying cause to prevent recurrence. In some cases, surgery might be recommended to ensure proper healing.

Don’t ignore the signs! Ear hematomas can be painful and worsen if left untreated. If you notice any symptoms, contact us at EberVet Pet Clinic to get your dog feeling comfortable and back to their playful self.
