First day for the NEW pool at day care today! Luna the Kelpie was first to jump off the NEW dock with Zara the Labrador right behind!! And then Annabelle the Golden Retriever and Bandit the Boxer and even Riker the German Shepherd! Woohoo! We all had a swim and learnt where the ramps and platforms are. Some were quick to get the hang of it, but we’ve got all summer to enjoy the pool, practice our dives and work on our swimming!! It’s going to be a great summer at the Farm!
P.S At the end ... Luke realised there was just one that hadn’t gone for a swim yet ... and he just couldn’t have that ... 🙄

Raising Bijoux the DAD - T1D service dog

Definition of a Diabetic Alert dog:

A diabetic alert dog is an assistance dog trained to detect high (hyperglycemia) or low (hypoglycemia) levels of blood sugar in humans with diabetes and alert their owners to dangerous changes in blood glucose levels.[1] This allows their owners to take steps to return their blood sugar to normal, such as using glucose tablets, sugar and carbohydrate rich food. The dog can prompt a human to take insulin.

We know that medical alert or service dogs are not well known in South Africa but you would think that mayor retailers and corporations are a little more well informed. But yet again we were proven wrong.

We went to Table bay Mall this Thursday as well do many Thursdays. Its one of our favorite places to go as this mall allows ALL service dogs and their handlers. WOOLWORTHS always shows so much love towards the dogs and it's appreciated beyond believe. But Checkers just left a bad taste in our mouths again by refusing our "dog" entry.

This being said when Bijoux goes to table bay she ALWAYS wears her veat which clearly state she is a service dog and not a pet!

Medical service dogs are not just there to prevent a medical emergency they are also held by the same high standard as guide dogs do to be trained to behave while they are out in public. Bijoux just like any guide dog has her gold level in KUSA Canine Good Citizan.

Does Checkers ban guide dogs also? Do you make a habit of it to turn people with a disability away just because they don't fit into your norm?

We found a courier service at PEP Stores. They send parcels from Swellendam PEP to a PEP near you. 3 - 5 days @ R99.95 5 - 7 days @ R75.96 and 7 - 10 days @ R49.95 courier charge. We will need address and telephone number for this service

Dogs4u2c/Vizzdog will donate 3 of our visible dog vests, to the value of R400, to Swellendam SPCA. Changing further sponsors and bidders

WE DID IT!!!! Thanks to YOU who supported us in this hugely important project, we managed to sterilise and vaccinate 93 cats and dogs over the two day mass steri drive. Just short of our 100 target over the two days, but we will pursue the 7 stragglers until they are done too 😁

We are so so very grateful to everyone who contributed to the project either financially or with newspaper and black bags. Massive thanks to EnviroVet CVC's Dr Annelize Roos and her fantastic team, vet assistants Riaan Alexander "the pitbull whisperer" 😂 and Caro Swarts. (Actually, pitbulls get the bad rap but it was a fluffy little thing called LAPPIES who gave us the hardest time!!! If ever there was a furry alligator...😅)

Thank you so much to those who volunteered over the two days: Lauren Heughan Visagie and Chris Visagie, who took an impressive dive tackle for the team safely catching LOLA the escape artist 👏👏; Cantare Schierholt, Gerald Edwards, Linda Wiseman and Justin, Jane Walker and Bev Walsh; and to Elsie D'Oliveira, Mari Jo Wiehe, Marinda & Sarie and Noelene Cole for the food; huge thanks to Wim Lubbersen for the beautiful photos.

To Jeannette L'Estrange and Nicky Appelboom for keeping our charges from feeling lonely in kennels while we were gone on this important mission; and of course to our dedicated staff: Inspector Dee Hazell and Operations Manager Nats Rebel Brown who got the show on the road and made sure it all went without a glitch.

Finally, THANK YOU to the RESPONSIBLE pet owners who entrusted us to keep their animals safe and healthy and we hope to see them all again at the next outreach dipping session.

When introducing your dog to our dog vests, please follow the following instructions:
Keep the vest away from your dog when you pull the velcro apart. Gently slide the vest over the dogs back and neck. Then only fasten the neck band. The bottom half of the vest fastens under the ribcage of the dog and not its belly.
Some dogs are frightened by the sound of the velcro strips. After the walk, you may take the vest off in any way you please. From there on, your dog will associate the vest with a walk or a run or a swim and going out to have some fun
