Make sure your animals vaccinations are up to date. There were 2 confirmed positive cases of Rabies in cattle not far from Swellendam.

28 September is !

The theme for this year is: “Breaking Boundaries”.

Remember all mammals can get infected by rabies. The common signs of rabies are: Changes in behaviour and neurological symptoms, which may include the following signs: Excessive salivation, paralysis, inability to swallow, continuous vocalisation, convulsions, aggressiveness, or non-responsive behaviour.

Report any suspected rabid animals immediately to your state or private veterinarian, animal health technician or the police.

Are your dogs and cats up to date with their rabies vaccinations? Protect them and you!

WELLNESS WEDNESDAY ⭐️

🐾Babesia is a protozoan parasite that infects red blood cells and causes babesiosis, a tick-borne disease in dogs, or as we know it “Bosluiskoors”/ Tick fever.

*Here are some key points:*

🐾⁠Causes: ticks that bite the dogs

🐾Symptoms:
•Anemia
•Pale gums
•Lethargy
•Weakness
•Jaundice (yellow gums)
•Dark urine

🐾Diagnosis:
•Physical examination
•Laboratory test (blood smears)

🐾Treatment:
The best treatment is *prevention with tick and flea products*, such as Bravecto Nexgard, Simparica or spot ons. (Available at our clinic).

‼️There are no home remedies or cures‼️


If you suspect your dog has babesiosis, consult a veterinarian promptly! Early treatment is crucial for a successful outcome.

‼️Pyometra is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition in dogs.This condition affects 1 out of every 4 female dogs that are not sterilized. ‼️

Pyometra is bacterial infection of the uterus, which can lead to:
- Uterine rupture
- Peritonitis
- Sepsis
- Death

Causes:
- Hormonal changes
- Uterine lining thickening
- Bacterial growth

Symptoms:
- Vaginal discharge
- Lethargy
- Loss of appetite
- Dehydration
- Abdominal pain

💊🏥Treatment:
- Emergency spay surgery
- Antibiotics
- Supportive care

Prevention is better than treatment, thus to prevent this get your dog sterilized at an early age!

If you suspect your dog has Pyometra, consult a veterinarian immediately!
Prompt treatment is crucial for a successful outcome.
