Try this to ensure you never run out of healthy food for your feathered family members.

Dehydrating vegetables can save you money and reduce food waste. Can be done in the oven or food dehydrator. Dehydrated fruits and vegetables maintain their nutrients and can be stored much longer than fresh produce. Store them in jars for those emergency days or ground them up and add them to those picky eaters food bowls to ensure they get all their veggie/fruit intake thats required.

Healthy leafy greens costs nothing and is so easy. Grown by the the cuttings from carrot tops en beetroot tops. Simlpy cut what you need and they regrow.

Coco's story

We had the opportunity to work with a very special parrot.

Coco's owner contacted us in a desperate need to find help for her African grey that means the world to her. Coco was plucking most of her feathers. Mainly on sunflower seed diet refusing to eat anything else accept having coffee with her owner in the mornings. Coco was also very moody and irritated constantly rubbing her beak/nose with her feet having some difficulty breathing.

So lets talk about what we look at when assessing a situation like this. Coco is loved dearly by her owner doing her best to fulfill the needs of a parrot. But there are some topics to discuss that most people aren't aware of. We dont just look at the diet but the whole picture such as whats going on in the home aswell as their cage setup. What is making Coco sick and what can be improved.

1. Sunflower seed only diet is the worst and a very big NO! African greys need to have a diet consisting of mostly fresh vegetables, fruits, grains and pellets.

2. Perches used in cages. Only smooth wooden sticks were used in Coco's cage. Coco's feet started to show the beginning stages of forming callouses. We replaced them with safe natural wood which is better for feet and beaks.

3. Toys. Coco's toys was mainly baby toys and soft toys. They can play with them but there were no proper chewing toys. Wooden toys helps to prevent the beak from over growing. They also like destroying things. So by biting and breaking these wooden toys ensures stimulation and promotes foraging. We slowly started introducing new toys made from safe natural wood and shredding material.

4. Parrots are sensitive to strong smells. Coco's home had a very pleasant smell. Bowls of potpourri with strong essential oils. Very little people are aware of this. Stong fumes causes severe complications to a parrots respiratory system. Coco's owner removed it immediately upon learning the implications as she wants her parrot to be in good health.

Coco's owner tried everything to get her to eat healthier food. Begging and pleading with her to eat her veggies. Coco refused...African greys are one of your most intelligent parrots and Coco knew exactly how to manipulate her mom to give in and give her some more sunflower seeds and peanuts. Exactly how she liked it.

Coco needed 'rehab' to kick this addiction of sunflower seeds and coffee. Coco's owner made the decision. Even though she would miss her baby, something had to be done to save her life.

I was asked to go fetch Coco and the process started with no mommy to manipulate and give into her plea for coffee and seeds. Coco tested my patience every single day with literally everything. Little did she know i have all the patience in the world and that her health was more important than falling for her tricks. Healthy food was slowly introduced along with the sunflower seeds and she kicked against it every time. Berry&flower tea she started drinking from a mug because I pretended it to be coffee. I had to pull out all the tricks aswell as pretending to eat her food like my own. She started showing interest in this food this human is eating. By day 4 Coco was finally off her sunflower seeds and was eating her fresh healthy foods adding new foods little at a time. She stayed with us for a total of 8 days to ensure she was in a proper feeding routine and that she stayed in that routine by the time she went home.

First thing in the morning Coco would get her weetbix with strawberry yoghurt with the necessary rani herbs to assist with her recovery. Please note that Coco was taken to a vet but without her kicking the bad eating habits she couldnt get better as she couldnt get the proper nutrients from only sunflower seeds.

Twice daily she got her healthy food consisting of:
Butternut with seeds
Carrots
Beans
Peas
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Chillies
Banana
Grapes
Naartjie
Super pellets
Rani cooking mix
Rani superior seed mix
Sprouts
Raw oats

STATEMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!

It has been brought to my attention that certain members from a certain parrot group took my testimonial post of BOKKIE and using it to slander my name behind my back. They have started a discussion where the photo of BOKKIE has been used aswell as the story attached to it had been conveniently removed insinuating that the photo of BOKKIE is two different parrots.

My contact details is on the original post and anyone could have contacted me should they have had any questions. Yet no one contacted me regarding the matter. I find this unethical to try slander a persons name behind their back especially when you dont have all your facts straight and spreading lies.

Attached to this statement you will find numerous photos taken of BOKKIE during the recovery time. I have marked the one toe on most photos which is evident proof that all the photos is indeed of BOKKIE and NOT TWO DIFFERENT PARROTS. Yes BOKKIE has transformed into a beautiful timneh african grey compared to what he looked like when he arrived and YES it can be hard to believe that a bird can recovery so well. PLEASE LOOK AT THE DEFINITE DOTS ON HES TOE THAT YOU WILL SEE REPEATEDLY IN EVERY PHOTO. Please note that you will see changes in the cage and toys as I upgraded to a bigger cage and more variety of toys to ensure BOKKIE will always have the best care!

I AM THE CURRENT OWNER OF BOKKIE. SADLY HES ORIGANAL OWNER PASSED AWAY OF OLD AGE. BOKKIE IS NOT UP FOR ADOPTION.
