The second unit standard in our Dog Handler training is filled with adrenaline, but strategy and a clear mind are assets to deter crime with the help of a trained service dog.

There are specific techniques to learn when handling a service dog in the fight against crime. In this unit standard, we cover how to assess areas of duty, how to make informed decisions and plan duties, learn about the assessment of areas to be patrolled and how environmental factors affect the process. Also included is basic bite training, legal protocols, development of patrol plans and patrolling techniques.

The basics of dog handling might seem to be general knowledge. But do you know the correct techniques when it comes to service dogs?

During the first unit standard (SAQA Unit Standard 243188) of our Dog Handling training, we will be delving into some of the essential basics you need to know, from the care of a Service Dog, basic equipment overview, kennel maintenance, and obedience to the overview and application of working dog breeds. The course further delves into the key basic health checks, transport and safety, as well as the prevention and control of internal and external parasites.

Do you have a passion to understand the training of a service dog? Do you have the discipline to work alongside man's best friend with the correct handling techniques?

The next date for our accredited training for new handlers has been set: Monday 26 August 2024.

The duration for the full time Dog Handling course is 12 weeks, and each subject runs for 2 weeks at a time. The training is both theoretical and hands-on, and integrates with the day-to-day activities at the kennels.

We recently joined forces with our friends at to do a tracking workshop and K9 demo at a conservation camp, where everything from Detection to Apprehension of a suspect was demonstrated - down to a heart-thumping helicopter chase! K9 Tyson and K9 Ruth were the stars of the show, and we could not be prouder!
