Keep Your Pets Safe This Festive Season 🎄🐾

Christmas is a time for celebration, but it’s also a time to be extra mindful of your furry friends' health. Many of the foods we enjoy during the festive season can be harmful - or even toxic - to pets.

Here are a few tips to keep your pets safe around holiday treats:
❌ No leftovers: Avoid feeding pets fatty cuts of meat, gravy, or bones. These can cause gastrointestinal upset or even pancreatitis.
🍫 Keep chocolate away: Chocolate is toxic to dogs and cats, especially darker varieties.
🍷 Watch out for alcohol: Even small amounts can cause serious harm to your pets.
🥧 Avoid sweets and baked goods: Xylitol, a common sugar substitute, is extremely toxic to pets.

This Christmas, we’re also highlighting Duotox, a reliable product to help protect your pets from food-related toxins. Duotox supports detoxification and gut health, making it an excellent addition to your pet’s wellness routine - especially during the festive season.

Remember, prevention is better than cure! If your pet accidentally ingests something harmful, contact us or our emergency referral centre at 011 706 6023.

Wishing you and your pets a happy, healthy, and safe holiday season! 🎅🐶🐱

Christmas Décor Safety Tips for Your Pets 🎄🐶🐱

The festive season is magical, but holiday decorations can pose risks to your pets. Keep them safe with these quick tips:
❌ Tinsel & Ribbons: Keep out of reach to avoid choking or blockages.
❌ Ornaments: Use shatterproof ones and hang fragile items high.
❌ Fairy Lights: Secure cords to prevent chewing and electric shocks.
❌ Toxic Plants: Avoid mistletoe, holly, and poinsettias. Opt for pet-safe options.
❌ Candles: Use flameless alternatives to prevent burns or accidents.
❌ Wrapping Paper: Clean up immediately to avoid ingestion.

Supervise pets around decorations and contact us or our emergency referral centre at 011 706 6023 if they ingest anything harmful.

Wishing you and your furry friends a safe and joyful holiday! 🎁🐶🐱

As the feastive season arrives, it is important to remember that many of the foods we enjoy, are toxic to pets. 🐱🐶 In the case of these toxic foods being injested, having the right solution on hand is vital.

Duotox is a dual-action toxin absorbant designed for dogs, cats and exotic pets, enabling you to administer a safe and effective remedy in the event of poisoning, giving you time to get to the vet in an emergency. ✔

If you suspect your pet has injested a toxic substance, it is vital to seek veterinary care.

Take care of your beloved pets this feastive season, and keep Duotox on hand. Available in store! ❤

Caring for Senior Pets: Special Needs for Their Golden Years 🐾

As our pets age, their needs change. Here’s how to ensure your senior dog or cat stays healthy and comfortable:

✔ Regular Vet Visits: Older pets are more prone to health issues, so routine check-ups are crucial for early detection.
✔ Proper Nutrition: Senior pets need diets tailored to their age, focusing on joint support, weight management, and overall health.
✔ Exercise: Keep your senior pet active with gentle exercises to maintain mobility and prevent weight gain.
✔ Comfortable Living Spaces: Provide soft bedding and make adjustments to help them get around more easily if they have joint pain or mobility issues.
✔ Monitor Behaviour: Watch for changes in behaviour, such as confusion, increased sleeping, or restlessness, which could signal age-related health issues.
✔ Dental Care: Dental disease is common in senior pets, so regular dental check-ups and cleanings are a must.

A little extra care goes a long way in keeping your senior pet happy and healthy! 🐕🐈

Call Weltevreden Park Veterinary Clinic at 011 475 1342 to schedule a senior pet check-up today.

How to Tell if Your Pet is in Pain 🐾

Pets can’t tell us when they’re in pain, but they do show signs! Here are some key behaviours to watch for:

✔ Limping or Difficulty Moving: If your pet is reluctant to walk or jump, they might be in pain.
✔ Excessive Licking or Chewing: Constantly licking a specific area could indicate discomfort.
✔ Changes in Eating or Drinking: Loss of appetite or drinking less could be a sign of pain.
✔ Hiding or Avoiding Touch: If your pet is hiding or shying away from you, they may be trying to avoid discomfort.
✔ Vocalising: Whining, whimpering, or growling can indicate pain, especially if it happens when they move.
✔ Panting or Restlessness: Heavy breathing or pacing without reason might mean your pet is hurting.

If your pet shows any of these signs, it’s important to get them checked by a vet. Early detection is key to keeping them happy and healthy!
